The Shuchithwa Bodhana Padhayathra, a joint initiative of Mithradham and Rajagiri Outreach, which began from

Alwaye on January 1, 2013, with the aim of promoting environmental awareness in the Ernakulam district, concluded at the Rajagiri Kakkanad campus on January 15, 2013.

The concluding ceremony of the padhayathra was inaugurated by Thrikkakara Muncipal Chairman Shri.P.K. Muhammedali. Rev. Dr. Antony Kariyil CMI, Director of Rajagiri institutions, presided over the ceremony. Dr. J. Isaac, Principal, Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology, welcomed the gathering.

The padhayathra has been successful in creating health and environmental awareness amongst the general public and various institutions in its two-week long journey. Thrikkakara Residents Association Apex Council (TRAAC) President Mr. Anil Kumar, and Thrikkakara Ecumenical Society Chairman Rev. Dr. George Nellissery offered felicitations. Rev. Dr. George Peter Pittappillil CMI, Director, Mithradham shared his padhayathra experiences with the audience. Rev. Fr. Joel George Pullolil CMI proposed the vote of thanks.

The ceremony was followed by a panel discussion on Environment & Health, in which Mr. V.D. Suresh, Chairman, Health Standing Committee, Thrikkakara Muncipality; Mr. P. K. Alexander, Assistant Project Officer and District Coordinator of Shuchitwa Mission; Dr. Sivanand Achari, Department of Environmental Studies, CUSAT; Dr. C. M. Joy, Department of Botany, S.H. College, Thevara; Dr. Kochu Baby Manjooran, Deputy Manager (Energy & Environment) BPCL Kochi Refinery; Mr. Anil Kumar, President, TRAAC; and Rev. Dr. George Peter Pittappillil CMI participated. The panel discussion was moderated by Rev. Dr. Varghese Panthalookaran CMI.

Poster presentations and a street play on environmental awareness by the students of Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology were part of the day’s programmes. There was also an exhibition of the portable biogas plant and other models for waste management developed by Rajagiri Outreach.

The RSET Student Chapter of the Instrument Society of India was inaugurated by Mr. Jose Cyriac IAS, Chief Secretary, Kerala State on February 23, 2013, in the Department of Applied Electronics & Instrumentation. Rev. Fr. Jose Alex CMI, Provincial; Rev. Dr. Antony Kariyil CMI, Director; Mr. K. Rajan, Executive Director, HOCL, Kochi; and Dr. J. Isaac, Principal were present on the occasion.

The Instrument Society of India, which is a grouping of expert instrumentation engineers from all over India has 7 chapters across the country, including the Kochi chapter. The basic objective of the ISOI is to promote instrumentation as a relevant branch of engineering that will play a significant role in the future automated society. The formation of the RSET ISOI Student Chapter will enable the students of Instrumentation to be connected to senior practicing professionals in the industry as well as the academics, and will enhance the potential for interactions with them.

Mr. Jose Cyriac also inaugurated the Three day Workshop on Open Source Academic Tools, which was conducted by the Department of Computer Sciences & Engineering from February 22 to 24, 2013. The workshop highlighted the applications and advantages of using open-source tools for academic activities. It also familiarized the audience with the role of open-source tools in research.

SAMAVARTHANAM 2013

Samavarthanam 2013, the course completion ceremony of the second batch of M. Tech and ninth batch of

B.Tech students was held on June 4, 2013. 55 M.Tech students from four disciplines, and 397 B.Tech students from five disciplines received their course completion certificates on the occasion.

Hon’ble Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan was the Chief Guest of Samavarthanam 2013. In his address, he compared the course completion ceremony to the ancient ritual mentioned in Vedas whereby the pupil left the Gurukulam at the end of his studies, which also marked the end of Brahmacharya Asramam. He expressed his joy over the institution being a centre of excellence which provided education with a spiritual basis directed towards social commitment. He exhorted the students to develop an analytical mind, and stressed on the importance of continued research in their life which could even produce Nobel laureates.

Rev. Fr. Jose Alex CMI, Provincial and Manager presided over the function. Rev. Dr. Antony Kariyil CMI welcomed the gathering; while Dr. J. Isaac, Principal, administered the oath to the graduands. Mr. Jaison Jacob., Convener, Samavarthanam 2013 proposed the Vote of Thanks.

DEEKSHARAMBHAM 2013

Deeksharambham 2013, the initiation ceremony of the 13th batch of B. Tech and 5th batch of M. Tech students was conducted on August 1, 2013. Dr.

A.V George, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Delivering the Deeksharambham address, Dr. A.V George mentioned that advances in science & technology have positively benefited mankind down the ages, and exhorted the students to explore the possibilities of the discipline to the maximum. He stated that RSET is one of the best engineering colleges under the university, and he was hopeful that in time it would become a deemed university. He also invited the students of RSET to make use of the advanced facilities on offer at the new nano-research centre set up by the M. G. University.

3rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCES IN COMPUTING & COMMUNICATION (ACC-2013)

The third international conference on Advances in Computing & Communication, ACC-2013 was held from August 29 to 31, 2013. The conference was inaugurated by Shri P.J. Joseph, Minister for Water Resources, Government of Kerala. The conference provided a forum for sharing insights, experiences and interaction on various facets of evolving technologies and patterns related to Computer

Science, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication. The conference proceedings have been published in IEEE Xplore.

There were six plenary sessions, given by experts namely Dr. Shivashankar B. Nair, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, (IIT-G), Amit Acharyya, IIT Hyderabad, Dr. K.Chandra Sekaran, National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, Fr. Dr. Jaison Paul Mullerickal, RSET, Dr. Paul Thadikaran, Intel Corporation, USA and Dr Jayan Ozhikandathil, Concordia University, Montreal Canada.

3rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCES IN COMPUTING & COMMUNICATION (ACC-2013)

The paper presentations were conducted parallel to other technical sessions during the course of the conference. Of the total 536 papers received for ACC-2013, 103 papers were finally accepted for presentation. The presentations included diverse areas like Green Energy Technologies, Low Energy Computing, Low Power Embedded System Design, Emerging Technologies, ICT Systems, Energy

Efficient Software System and Applications and Secure and Reliable Systems. Participants included researchers and research students from academia and corporates around the globe. All the sessions were chaired by renowned experts from different parts of the world.

There were four co-located workshops namely International Workshop on Recent Advances in Wireless and Microwave Technology (IWAMT); International Workshop on Recent Trends in Wireless and Mobile Computing (IWTMC); International Workshop on Data Mining (IWDM) ; and International Workshop on Architectures and Systems for Big Data in Science and Engineering Research.

FRACTALS & WAVELETS

The International Conference on Fractals & Wavelets (ICFW), organized by RSET in association with the American Mathematical Society, was inaugurated by Prof. V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Executive Vice President & Principal Secretary, KSCSTE, on Wednesday, 13th November 2013. In his inaugural address, Dr. Pillai highlighted the importance

of science in the advancement of technology, and said that ICFW would serve as a platform for bringing together scientists and technologists who could contribute to knowledge building. Individual excellence, he stated, will lead to institutional excellence, and institutional excellence will lead to universal excellence.

Dr. Albert Espar, leading innovator and CEO, Innotech Engineers Association, Germany, delivered the main lecture

at the International Seminar on Solar Drying & Food Processing which was conducted on October 18, 2013. Dr. Espar’s lecture focused on how solar energy could be effectively utilized in food processing, and on related innovative practices in the field.

Melbourne, Australia organized an International Workshop On Cloud Computing and the Aneka Platform on October 19, 2013. Shri Benny Behanan MLA inaugurated the workshop.

The resource persons for the workshop were Dr Rajkumar Buyya, Professor of Computer Science and Software

Engineering, and Director of the Cloud Computing and Distributed Systems Laboratory, University of Melbourne, Australia; and Mr. K. Raghavendra, Scientist at ADRIN, Department of Space, Govt of India.

The Department of Applied Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering organised a 5-day workshop on Industrial Pollution Control for teachers from November 25 to 29, 2013. Resource persons included

The NSS unit of Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology, Kakkanad organized a Christmas charity programme ‘Spare a Coffee, Spread a Smile’ for the inmates of Alphonsa Boys’ Home, Ernakulam South on Tuesday, December 17, 2013.

NSS volunteers, along with selected first year hostel students, visited Alphonsa Boys’ Home, and offered the inmates a day’s lunch, which was contributed by the day scholars of the college. They also distributed emergency lights and other essentials to the inmates. Principal, Dr J. Isaac gave leadership to the programme.

The RSET NSS unit conducted its annual special camp from December 16 to 22, 2013 at Nedumbassery Grama Panchayat. The camp, which began with an orientation programme by Sri. I.V Soman (ETI Co-ordinator, Kalamassery), was inaugurated by Nedumbassery Grama Panchayat President Sri.P.Y. Varghese on December 17, 2013, in the presence

of the Director Rev. Dr.Antony Kariyil CMI and Principal, Dr. J Isaac. Rev. Dr. Antony Kariyil delivered a session on “Methods of Social Work” after the inauguration.

The NSS volunteers engaged in two days of field work in ‘Asraya Bhavan’ at Nedumbassery Panchayat. They cleaned the surroundings and made a vegetable garden. They also visited the Anganvadi nearby and distributed sweets to the children. On December 21, 2013, the volunteers engaged in Flower Tree Planting on the sides of NH47. Sri Anwar

Sadath MLA, Aluva, and NSS Technical Cell State Co-ordinator Sri.Abdul Jabbar Ahammed had interactive sessions with the volunteers on the same day.

The camp members also enjoyed a boat ride from Kakkanad to Vytilla, and celebrated Christmas together. In the Valedictory function held on December 22, 2013, the Principal Dr.J.Isaac addressed the students and honored the best female and male campers - Ms. Dhanya Clara Joseph and Mr. Basil George.

The 79th Annual Conference of the Indian Mathematical Society was inaugurated by Prof. K.V. Thomas, Minister of State for Agriculture, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India on December 28, 2013 at RSET. Prof. Geetha S. Rao FNASc, Former Professor of Ramanujan Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, Madras

University, and President of the Indian Mathematical Society presided over the inaugural ceremony. Dr. D. Babu Paul IAS was the Guest of Honour on the occasion.

Renowned academicians Prof. K.S.S. Nambooripad and Prof. R. Sivaramakrishnan were honoured for their contributions to Mathematics during the inaugural ceremony.

The four day conference of the oldest and largest Mathematical Society of India featured invited lectures by distinguished mathematicians, plenary talks, and symposia in various disciplines of Mathematics. Researchers, academicians, and students from around the country took part in the conference.
