Samavarthanam 2012, the course completion ceremony of the first batch of M. Tech and eighth batch of B.Tech students was held on May 25, 2012. Twenty seven

M.Tech students from two disciplines and four hundred and fourteen B.Tech students from five disciplines received their course completion certificates on the occasion.

Prof. Dr. M. S. Ananth, former Director, IIT Madras, and presently visiting Professor, IISc, Bangalore was the Chief Guest of Samavarthanam 2012. Through the Samavarthanam Address, Dr. Ananth shared his thoughts on education with the audience. In his address, Dr. Ananth expounded on the components of education, namely knowledge, know-how and character; and laid emphasis on the need to build character through education. He also elucidated Aurobindo’s principles of education; the connection between learning and creativity; and emphasized the use of intuition in learning. Discussing the history of education in India, from the gurukula system to the ‘shikshyakula’ system wherein the student may learn from gurus distributed on the internet, he pointed out that character formation through education has suffered down the ages. Character is built through education in values. This was achieved through the social structures like the joint families, discourses and panchayaths in earlier times.

Dr. Ananth underlined the need for

innovation and entrepreneurship in the globalised scenario. He also urged the students to take pride in their country, and added that non-violence, truthfulness and fearlessness were the most important requirements of a good character.

Rev. Fr. Jose Alex CMI, Provincial and Manager presided over the function. Delivering the Presidential Address, Rev. Fr. Jose Alex CMI exhorted the students to lead a meaningful life, inspiring others.Rev. Dr. Antony Kariyil CMI, Director, welcomed the gathering; while Dr. J. Isaac, Principal, administered the oath to the graduands. Prof. Kuttyamma A.J., Convener, Samavarthanam 2012 proposed the Vote of Thanks.

University rank holders of M.Tech (2010-2012), and B.Tech (2007-2011) were felicitated during the ceremony.

RAJAGIRI DISTINGUISHED LECTURE

Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament, delivered a lecture as part of the Rajagiri Distinguished Series

on September 13, 2012. In his lecture, Dr. Tharoor stated that engineers were known to find simplistic solutions to complicated problems, but their narrow focused approach and tendency to view life as strictly black and white needed to be changed. Expanded thinking and exploring other possibilities are essential to be successful in life.

Drawing on his own experience, he pointed out that failures and setbacks are a part of life, and the opposite of success should not be seen as failure, but not trying. It is our ability to bounce back after a failure which is important, and just as the waves in the sea have crests and troughs life should be understood as a series of ups and downs.

He also exhorted the students to be the best they could be, thereby contributing to the betterment of the nation and the world. He pointed out that the younger generation could do a lot to improve India’s social and economic conditions, enabling the nation to move on from being Super poor to Super power.

During his interaction with the students, Dr. Tharoor remarked that it was unfortunate that the educated middle class did not enter politics, when there was so

5RSET NEWS

much they could do. The disillusionment which has set in with regard to politics can be wiped out only if more committed people were ready to enter the field – just as we elect the government we deserve, we deserve the government we elect. He opined that the hartal culture of Kerala is its biggest obstacle in development, but unfortunately the political leaders in the state were not willing to consider alternatives to mark their dissent.

Dr. Shashi Tharoor also formally inaugurated the technical extravaganza Abhiyanthiriki 2012. Rev. Dr. Antony Kariyil CMI presided over the function. Dr. Vinod Kumar P.B., Principal-in-charge welcomed the gathering, while Mr. Bedwin Taitus, Student Coordinator of Abhiyanthriki 2012 proposed the vote of thanks.
