Along the Costa Blanca branches of the Roman Catholic charity – an international organisation – have be-come the last port of call for people in need.
But as the situation worsens, Cari-tas branches are launching cam-paigns for more donors to help fund its “very necessary work”.
Figures reveal that by 2010, Cari-tas was feeding one million people across Spain and earlier this year the charity estimated that 22% of Span-ish households were living below the poverty line – twice as many as 2007 – with some 11 million people said to be at risk.
It also found nearly a third of families were in difficulty surviv-ing until the end of each month and 600,000 received no income at all. Unemployment is over 25% - in the under 25 age band more than 50% - and there are said to be over 30,000 homeless people.
Caritas general Secretary Sebas-tian Mora outlined the situation to the eU. “there are more poor people than last year and they are poorer.
“Poverty is more widespread, more intense, more chronic, and it is creat-ing a polarised society in which the gap between the rich and poor is grow-ing – if the walls of social restraint dis-

Javea this week to be told the finan-cial situations of many families in the town had become unsustainable – and the numbers of people seeking the charity’s help had soared in 2012.
george thomas is a member of Caritas in Javea Port, a branch of the charity launched in 2010 when the crisis was already biting. he said: “the financial means of humanitarian or-ganisations are also running out. the threat of having to put an end to aid owing to the lack of finance is hang-ing over the community.”
he explained how Caritas helped people with food and clothing, and also rents and utility bills, “and this help is irrespective of race, colour or creed.”
he said two years ago the char-ity started in Javea Port when it was clear there were a great many fami-lies in need. “the problem in places like Javea can be disguised because of its large expat population.
“It is primarily the Spanish, the im-migrant population and illegal im-migrants who need our help.”

THE ORIHUELA Councillor for the Coast, Infra-structure and Beaches has been denounced for misappropriation of funds according to court proceedings that have been opened in Orihuela.
The court documents state that Pedro Man-cebo has been accused by three British expat clients of a crime of misappropriation; alle-gations which have been vigorously denied by the Deputy Mayor.
The case has been brought by Dorothy Maureen Wilson, the late David Frederick Wilson and their daughter, Carol Glover who claim that in 2004 they gave the Councillor, who was acting as their lawyer, power of at-torney when he represented them in an Ori-huela notary in order to purchase a home.
They say that Mancebo used these powers to sign a 70,000€ CAM bank mortgage deed for a property in the La Solana area of Orihuela.

According to the court documents, Mrs Glover states that this amount was put into her bank account on 27th January 2005 and the next day Mr Mancebo ordered cash to the amount of 67,020€ using the power that he had been given.
The complaint was filed in Aspe in October 7th 2010, five years after the alleged incident following Mancebo’s alleged refusal to repay the money or even give an explanation as to where it went.
The court documents also state that on September 1st 2010, the Councillor, who was in opposition at the time, was sent a burofax to his office to which there was “no response whatsoever”.
Mancebo says the money he took on 28th January from the account of his clients was
for a deposit on the mortgage and legal fees. He added that the Director of the bank was aware of the transaction and assured him that he would give the couple and their daughter the loan, which was pending and so he advanced the money.

But among the documents submitted to the court it is suggested that the lawyer took the money in cash as opposed to transferring it straight to the bank as is the norm.
Mancebo told RTN: “I have been denounced, that is true but I have not been charged. I have all the evidence which will clear me of any al-legations. There is no case to answer.” He also insists that this is an “unorthodox complaint” and that if the clients had a problem with his services they should take it to the Bar as op-posed to the Guardia Civil. The Orihuela court must now decide whether or not to continue with the proceedings and have the Council-lor testify to the charges or proceed to archive the case.

Two young executives join the party
TWO YOUNG Oriolanos have been appointed to the PP ‘New Generation’ representing the Vega Baja.
Pablo Lorenzo and Antonio Sanchez will be responsible for representing the interests of the New Generation People’s Party (NNGG). Both appointments were made during cel-ebrations at the Tenth PP Congress in Castellón.
Pablo Lorenzo, training as executive secretary, said it was “an exciting and vitally impor-tant role, targeting the training of young people and working for the future of the com-munity.” Antonio Sanchez said he was “delighted” with his appointment and looks forward to the challenges ahead.

AROUND 60,300 people in the province of Alicante - 130,000 throughout the Valencia - have lost their right to free health care, ac-cording to data released by the Department of Health this week.
All of these people are recognised on the National Security Institute’s (INSS) databases and will be billed for treatment in health cen-tres and hospitals.
The government has agreed on a policy of a 771€ payment per year for those under 65 and 1,864€ for those over 65 for private health cover, although this will not cover drugs.
Many of these 60,300 people are foreign-ers without papers or people who have never worked in Spain but whose income exceeds 100,000€ per year. However, some of those rejected for health cover are aged 26 plus yet unemployed, with no entitlement to benefits and have no independent resources.
The figures are causing some concern as they far exceed the 30,000 the Health Depart-ment intimated would be left outside gov-ernment health care – a staggering 100,000 more, left with no health care or an unafford-able alternative.
Continued from front pageBut GeorGe said the money provided by private donations was “rapidly” running out. “Figures for the first half of this year, 2012, show that the money paid out was two and a half times as much as in 2011, and up to six times as in the first year.”
He explained good housekeeping following very generous donations last year had kept the charity going but Caritas was receiving less financial gifts.
“We were able to build up a surplus but that has disappeared very rapidly. everything is a bit tougher, we are not getting as many donations while there are a lot more people asking for help.”
George said demands were growing on Caritas because people had previously been able to get support from family and friends but in the growing crisis “these same family and friends are themselves running out of financial means.”
RENTHe said the charity directly intervened as
landlords threatened to throw families into the street and discussed rent reductions and helped with emergency payments of rent and bills.
“Caritas never gives money directly to the people needing help – it is not just food and clothing but this sort of direct help is very complicated.”
George also paid tribute to the ongoing financial help provided by expat charities and “some very, very generous individuals”.
He said a man living in Pedreguer had turned land into a huge allotment and with Caritas providing seeds had grown vegetables which were distributed with food parcels.
“And I have read of two dentists in Gata who are providing free basic dental care to people referred to them by social services.”
George said donations of food basics helped stock the shelves of the food store – rice, pasta, and tins of tomatoes. “It is the basics rather than things like curry sauce; these people would not really know what to do with typical english food.”
He said he was appealing to the expat population to help ease the “desperate situation” for the last three months of the year. “We must call on your sense of generosity to make donations.”

Monica Lorente refuses to testify
Monica Lorente insists she is not involved and has nothing to do with the case
THe ex-MAyOR was in court for only 15 minutes in the com-pany of four defence lawyers up against anticorruption pros-ecutors Felipe Briones and Paul Romero.
Lorente’s brother Jorge also appeared in the courtroom. He was indicted along with 28 others in June of this year, alleg-edly implicated in crimes of corruption, disclosure of secret or privileged information, influence peddling and fraud.
Lorente contends that she has been the victim of a ‘witch hunt’ on the part of Socialist Antonia Moreno and the current mayor Monserrate Guillén.
On leaving the court she said: “I am innocent of all charges and have absolutely nothing to do with this case. I am not involved and my name does not appear on any of the docu-mentation concerned.”
EX PP mayor of Orihuela Monica Lorente refused to testify in the Brugal court hearing on Monday, answering five counts of corruption concerning alleged irregularities in the award of a waste removal contract.

The flood tollAT LEAST nine people have died as a result of the torrential rain that hit southern Spain last Friday.
Four oF the victims were in Murcia and included a nine-year-old girl; three from Almería; and a woman from Malaga where around 450 military personnel were deployed in rescue operations. Five flood victims re-ported as missing were later found to be safe and unharmed. Heavy rainfall during the af-
ternoon in the Marina Baixa forced police to cut off access to several streets and extensive damage to property was caused. Luckily there were no injuries although there were many small incidents with 32 agents mobilised in Benidorm and more than 50 calls for help were made to the local police.

British man arrested after Barcelona stabbing
By Jan GammSEAN HEISS, a British man aged 28 has been arrested in Barcelona after stabbing a woman to death near a cashpoint in the Eixample district of Barcelona at 7am on Saturday. His 35-year-old victim, as yet unnamed, died from her injuries in hospital some hours later.
Heiss, travelling on an Irish passport, is also wanted in the UK for the murder of his mother, 58-year-old Margaret Sheehy, found strangled at her home in Kingston, south west London, on 12th June.
Heiss was arrested by police in San Sebastian, northern Spain, on 18th June on a charge of threatening behaviour after allegedly threatening a hostel worker with a knife. However, he was released on bail shortly before the extradition request from the UK arrived.
Mossos d’Esquadra (the regional Catalan police) confirmed he was wanted for ques-tioning over his mother’s death and are now making enquiries as to whether there was a relationship between Heiss and his victim.

La Marina Urbanisation - dump it here, dump it there…
LAST WEEK, a denuncia was initiated by the two political parties in opposition to the PP and PIPN coalition in San Fulgencio follow-ing complaints from local residents. This re-sulted in Mayor Carlos ramirez being forced to order the extraction of the waste tipping site located on a large plot at the junction of calle Alfredo Kraus and Camino del Convenio in La Marina urbanisation.
Within 72 hours of receiving the denuncia the Mayor instructed Town Hall workers and a contractor to remove all the rubbish from this massive dump site to another location. They hastily loaded it all onto large skips and lorries and moved it, but not very far - to calle del Bosque, a green park area known to local residents as ‘The Valley’.
The travesty is that this new dump loca-tion is very close to many other houses in calle Extramadura, calle Asturias and those in the Marina del Mar urbanisation!

The APSFu and PSoE opposition council-lors in San Fulgencio believe that the Mayor and the current council has committed a seri-ous ecological transgression by destroying an area of great natural beauty, contravening local and regional by-laws and transforming it into an unlicensed and illegal dump site.
The damage that this will cause to the en-vironment and the consequences to people living in the houses nearby and overlooking this tip through pollution, infestations and disturbance is immeasurable.
This new dumping site is located within a large green belt area of great ecological value and has already resulted in the destruction of trees and native plants: it is also designated as a flood zone.
The APSFu and the PSoE, the two opposi-tion party groups in San Fulgencio, are con-sidering imposing legal sanctions against Mayor Carlos ramirez and the councillor for parks and gardens, Councillor Paulino Her-rero, for what is regarded as a crime against the environment.

Sale of Town Hall land stopped by opposition By Louise ClarkeTHE PROPOSED sale of municipal land on the coast by the Orihuela Town Hall was thwarted at last week’s ‘pleno’ meeting.
The project, which was a policy underwritten by the PSOE leader, Antonia Moreno, was to sell 11 plots of public land in Orihuela Costa, nearly half the remaining land owned by the Town Hall on the coast, for the construction of more than 500 new houses.
The plans were successfully challenged after a PP motion to stop the sale was submitted and supported by CLARO Councillor Bob Houliston. The motion was approved by a majority and the procedure will now be stopped and the land in question reclassified for civic purposes.
MAJOR SETBACKBob Houliston told RTN: “The PP-CLARO arguments were that it was a mistake to deprive
Orihuela Costa of land that would be needed in the future to provide facilities for social, civic, educational, sport and leisure activities for an expanding population.”
The opposition also believes that this is the wrong time to sell council land in a depressed market - and 500 more houses is the last thing Orihuela Costa needs among so much unsold property.

of the land sale with a few remarks of her own that included the statement that the council under the leadership of Monica Lorente “left Orihuela in ruins,” adding, “…when the beneficiaries were private pockets they either applauded or kept quiet. When the beneficiaries are to be the citizens, they become the worthiest, saying that the coast has many houses, including that of Mr. Houliston.”

Torrevieja councillors in sleaze rowTHE PP government team in Torrevieja is alleged to have authorised payment for all mobile telephone accounts for its councillors, advisers and officials throughout the 2011 October and November period - including calls to prostitutes; numbers connected with pornographic content; channel subscriptions; football downloads and games.

In an explosive council meeting last Friday the Greens councillor (LV), Jose Hurtado, warned that the payment of such expenses could be deemed a crime of embezzlement.
FRAUD
Spokesman Joaquin albaladejo claimed that the Government team had been the “victims of fraud” con-cerning ten of the telephone lines in question and 6,500€ had been re-funded against a number of invoices. Several opposition councillors walked
out in response to his comments. al-baladejo declined to identify the users of many of the lines. However, a letter of support that alluded to “family is-sues” was read out from the wife of Councilman Daniel Plaza-mayor who was absent from the session: over the two months he made 49 calls to pros-titutes - paid for with government funds.
NOBODY’S PERFECT
albaladejo made an attempt at an apology but added that “nobody was
perfect” and inferred that the alleged misappropriation of public money was the result of an innocent mistake and human imperfection rather than a de-liberate attempt at fraud.
Following a tense exchange of views Councillor Marga Torregrosa (aPTCe) said the government team had made the town a “laughing stock” all over Spain, with four different versions of what had happened “and no one has had the dignity to resign.”
Legal action against those involved has not been ruled out.

Unanimous approval for new foot bridgeBy Louise ClarkeAT LAST week’s Orihuela ‘pleno’ meeting it was unanimous agreed to press ahead for a new foot bridge over the N332 dual carriageway in Playa Flamenca.
All parties including opposition party, Partido Popular and Bob Houliston, President of the Coastal party CLARO, voted in favour of the motion which demands safe access to the beach for the residents of and visitors to Playa Flamenca.
The motion demanded that the long overdue pedestrian bridge be put in place with no more delays or excuses at Alameda del Mar, better known to all Orihuela Costa residents as the crossing point at Cala Mosca.
The pedestrian footbridge at La Mosca is not the only missing bridge across the N-332, and for this reason the Councillor for the Coast, Pedro Mancebo, has provided €240,000 in the budget for the other long awaited footbridge which will be placed at La Regia.
Now the budget has finally been accepted, despite the attempts of the PP party and Bob Houliston to stop it, the project for this bridge can now be put in place. Mancebo concluded that the safety of the residents and tourists is paramount and it is the government’s priority to have the two bridges in place as soon as possible.
Have-a-go shop owner sees off robber
ZARA CANO, the 24-year-old owner of a confectionary kiosk in the old town in Elda, bravely fought off an armed rob-ber who burst into her shop on Monday at around 5.30pm brandishing a knife. Zara instantly began yelling, screaming and dodging his knife thrusts, eventually scaring him into the street where he made a run for it with Zara in hot pursuit screeching for help. “I’m a normal girl,” she said, “but open-ing this kiosk cost me a lot of work, a lot of effort, a lot of sacrifice and a lot of money and I’m not willing to let anyone rob me.” Zara later admitted to suffering a panic attack after the incident. Her attacker is thought to be a drug addict with withdrawal symptoms who also tried unsuccessfully to steal cash from a nearby grocery store minutes later.

I READ with great interest in the Teulada newsletter sent to all its residents in July this year that the new roundabout built on the Moraira Teulada road did not cost the council anything at all. The council proudly went on to announce that this roundabout - which cost 450,000€ - was paid for entirely by the owners of a supermarket chain. What readers fail to notice and I’m sure the council is happy local residents don’t question is that the new roundabout measures approximately 15 metres in diameter and consists of a single olive tree placed on a bed of gravel. I’m sorry but I fail to see how this structure could have cost 450,000€ when one can get a fully functional villa of 250 square meters built for about 300,000€ including pool and garden features. I dumbfoundedly also ask what in heaven’s name did the far more elaborate roundabouts between Moraira and Teulada full of metal fish and botanical jungles cost that were paid for by local councils?It’s no wonder governments and councils don’t have any money left in their coffers when they pay absolutely no regard to what they spend or at least take some measures to insure the prices they pay for public works are realistic to regular building costs.Edmond Nico, Moraira

I HAVE never written to a newspaper before but I am appalled to see how badly disabled pensioners are being treated by the UK works and pensions people. Recently there was a program on TV highlighting several similar cases. Details of a company working on behalf of the disabled were mentioned and they have had a 100% success rate with their appeals. I WAS wondering if you could help promote awareness of Celiac Dis-ease and its problems around the hotel. As a sufferer it is hard to go to hotels without been ill after eating the food. Hotels need to realise that two out of every ten people suffer from this. I myself have had it for only three years but ex-perience a great deal of pain after eating some-thing I should not have! And if Celiac sufferers do not eat correctly com-plications could lead to bowel cancer. Celiac Dis-ease is a digestive con-dition triggered by con-sumption of the protein gluten, found in bread, pasta, cookies, pizza crust and many other foods containing wheat, barley or rye. Spain ‘Record holders for noise’TWO WEEKS ago in Valencia, where I have lived for 32 years, I was helping a couple from London locate the correct bus when I asked for their impressions of the city. “It’s okay, but it seems very noisy. Is it always like this?”“They like noise here,” I replied, as a couple of Vespinos on those ubiquitous, infernally noisy mosquitos, roared by. “The first thing the scooter owners do is remove the mufflers to demonstrate their independence.”Spain is the second noisiest country in the world. This is nothing new. It´s been repeating as ‘runner-up’ in the ‘ranking’ for years according to various objective studies (Time Magazine: 2007/2009). And Valencia is the seventh noisiest city on the planet.With barely 850,000 inhabitants in Valencia ‘Proper’s’ city limits, it’s much noisier than other larger metropolises with 10 or 15 times its population (including London). IN ISSUE 676 of RTN the headline was ‘Fight for benefit justice’, an article by Jack Troughton. I have the same problem with the DWP in Newcastle-upon-Tyne UK regarding my state pension. I think the UK is bankrupt but won’t admit it! The DWP must have been ordered by the government to cut back on any benefits to ex-pats, regardless whether it’s legal or not, to save any money they can!Out of the blue my state pension has been cut by over 60% without any warning because I left the UK to live in Spain, for much the same reasons as Margaret Rob-inson did in your article.When I protested, the ‘team’ at the DWP said I was no longer entitled to the Aus-tralian part of my pension that they had been paying for the last ten years under
the reciprocal agreement with the UK government going back to 2001, because I was no longer an ‘ordinary resident’ of the UK.They said I should have known this, but no one, including my UK accountant and solicitor, knew anything about this ‘get out’ clause. I’ve gone to the Appeal Tri-bunal Court, but this will take months I was told. How can they take away a state pension that I’ve paid into all my working life, yet they can give millions away in benefits to asylum seekers and refugees who’ve contributed nothing to the UK economy, without batting an eyelid?I will take this up with the European Court of Human Rights in Brussels if need be: I suggest Mrs Robinson does the same. Howev-er, the economic crisis has awakened Spain’s curiosity as to the King’s cash… The palace is keeping its finances under wraps other than to confirm that the King does not receive commissions for the numerous and occasion-ally spectacular overseas contracts he secures on behalf of the Spanish government, such as the US$9.9 billion rail contract brokered in Saudi Arabia last year.

Nit de l’Albá pyrotechnician dies in hospital
PYROTECHNICIAN VICENTE Albarranch has died in the Hospital La Fe in Valencia from burns he sustained during the disastrous Nit de l’Albá on 15th August, when rockets he was han-dling exploded prematurely. 56-year-old Albarranch suffered burns over 50% of his body and later developed infections that caused his death, yet during his six week stay in hospital was more concerned about the consequences of his accident affecting the emblematic Nit de l’Albá than for his own condition. His funeral took place on Sunday morning.

Test flights completed
AENA CARRIED out flight tests at the Región de Murcia International Airport this week to verify arrival, departure and approach procedures for flights arriving and departing at the facility in a joint exercise between AENA, the regional government and representatives from Spanish Air Force Base Alcantarilla.
The procedures were previously agreed upon by the General Air Force Academy based at San Javier, following
consultation with representatives from the Alcantarilla Air Base and the Span-ish Air Force, as well as senior officials at the Department for Public Works and Planning of the regional government, the airport concessionary company and experts from AENA.
All arrivals, departures and approach procedures that require the use of the VOR air navigation aid were tested, not only that of RMU, but also those
of nearby airports (San Javier, Alicante and Almeria). In addition, the technical staff tested procedures involving the use of RMU9s ILS (Cat I) precision ap-proach instrument.
The results of the test flights will be published by Aena Aeropuertos in an offi-cial report during the coming weeks and will subsequently be presented to the In-terministerial Committee of Defense and Public Works (CIDEFO) for approval.

Kings of the spring and the fall!By Jan GammRUSSIAN TOURISM in the Costa Blanca has prompted an increase of 58% in overnight stays in Benidorm in the second half of September, leading hotel association Hosbec to celebrate a profitable outlook for the quarter in the run up to December.
“No one in Spain - not Barcelona or Mallorca – no one exceeded 90% occupancy in September: we are the kings of the spring and the fall!” said delighted Hosbec President Antonio Mayor on Wednesday: the latest survey of hotel occupancy in the area was 91.6%.
Representatives of the tourist industry on the Costa Blanca have made a considerable effort this year to promote Spain’s holiday resort attractions to potential Russian customers with outstanding results.
Hosbec believes the Russian market will shortly become the third international market for tourism in the region, partly due to the Russian climate that tends to be cold and grey, encouraging Russians to seek holiday breaks in warmer climes all the year round.
Russian patronage has swelled the coffers in nightclubs, restaurants and bars as well as hotels. And another piece of good news is that tourists in this group tend to spend far above the average in basics and also tips.
The UK market continues to make up the lion’s share of holidaymakers to the region but there is no longer any doubt that the Russians are here – and here to stay!
More than a holiday resortBENIDORM HAS hosted a tour under the auspices of the Ma-rine Historical Association, exploring the historical side of the city along a path leading to a castle that disappeared cen-turies ago. A narrative of the city’s Byzantine past and life in Benidorm in the 18th Century is a far cry from the bikini-clad image projected of the city since the sixties. The tour was intended for the interest of city residents but a number of tourists stopped to listen as the tour continued to the port, ending in the garden of the house of Columbus. The Vatican trial
PAOLO GABRIELE, former butler to Pope Benedict XVI, took the stand at his own trial this week to answer to the charge of theft of hundreds of secret papers from the pope’s personal apartment and leaking them to the Italian press. He claims he did it to “bring the Church back to the right path” in reference to the alleged corruption he saw in the Vatican. If convicted Gabriele faces up to eight years in jail but there is speculation that
the pope could pardon him if he is found guilty. The case is thought to be the most significant ever heard in the Vatican City court. Vatican computer technician Claudio Sciarpelletti also faces trial accused of complicity – if found guilty he also faces a prison term likely to be only a few months. Prison terms handed down by the court are served in the Italian prison system, under an agreement between the Vatican City State and Italy.

Europe at workRESIDENTS Of a Marina Alta town travelled to Brussels with MEP Eva Ortiz to see the European Union at work – with visits to the European Parliament and European commission. A par-ty of 17 – Calpe Mayor Cesar Sanchez, town hall colleagues and representatives of organisations involved in community work - travelled to the heart of the EU for a number of meetings and to present projects that could win European funding.
The group was also enjoyed a social night out to sample typ-ical Belgium hospitality – and were wined and dined in style.
Councillor Carole Saunders said she visited the European head office of church charity Caritas with Don Paco, parish priest of Calpe’s Our Lady of the Snows, who presented a plan to try and help those dropping out of society.
“We had a very interesting meeting and talked to all the staff of various nationalities – they explained a project they were working on, a minimum wage for all European countries.”
And she said a highlight was meeting David Lowe, secre-tary of the European Parliament’s important petitions com-mittee which dealt with citizen appeals – including the thou-sands protesting against Valencia’s ‘land grab’ laws.
“It was nice to meet him on home ground. I have met him several times before in Spain to do with the LRAU and LUV, and with saving the Calpe Salinas,” she said.

“It seems wildlife numbers – we have seen a fall in the swallow population - are down because food supplies are be-ing hit as insects are dying through the use of insecticides.”

THE NEW bishop of Orihuela-Alicante, Va-lencian Murgui Jesus Soriano, has marked his first homily to the Christian community in Orihuela, like his predecessors, by riding into the city on a white mule.
Earlier, he made a stop at the nearby town of Cox at around noon, where he visited the parish, town hall and the convent of the Vir-gin of Carmen, moving on to Callosa de Se-gura and Redován.
Shortly before 5pm the bishop offered the traditional orange at the altar in the parish of St Anthony, sharing prayers before mak-ing the mile-long journey on a white mule named ‘Pepita’ (who seemed to enjoy the outing immensely) to the historic entrance to the city, accompanied by two canons of the Cathedral Chapter.

Murgui Soriano, the thirty-sixth bishop since the founding of the Diocese of Orihuela-Ali-cante in 1564 by Pope Pius IV, comes after the retirement of Rafael Palmero.
Soriano, born in Valencia in 1946, was ordained as a priest in 1969. He studied at the Metropolitan Seminary of Moncada (Valencia) and achieved a degree in theol-ogy from the Pontifical University of Sala-manca and doctorate in the same subject from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was pastor of St James the Apos-tle in Moncada (1982-86) and Santa Maria in Ontinyent (1986-93), appointed episco-pal vicar of Lliria-Via in Madrid until he was elected Auxiliary Bishop of Valencia in March 1996.
In December 2003 Soriano was appointed Bishop of Mallorca where he remained until his present appointment.
On an area of 4,415 square kilometres, the Diocese of Orihuela-Alicante has 350 priests.

GIBRALTAR HAS been made a provisional member of football association UEFA pending a decision on permanent member-ship to be made at the UEFA Congress next May in London. Until now membership for Gibraltar has constantly been re-jected since its application in the nineties due to strong ob-jection from Spain, forcing Gibraltar to seek arbitration from the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport). Speaking to Spanish broadcaster Telemadrid, Spanish Sports Minister Jose Ignacio Wert said Spain would continue to oppose Gibraltar’s place at UEFA and “exhaust all legal means” to ensure its membership of UEFA is not made permanent.
Lottery winner and benefit fraudster dodges jailLAWRENCE CANDLISH, a 38-year-old lottery winner from Gateshead who scooped £5.5 million in 1997 aged just 23 but later lost his fortune after investing in a bar in Benidorm in 2005, has appeared in court in UK on fraud charges after claiming £13,000 disability benefit while in Spain. His Newcastle-United themed villa, Casa Shearer, has since been seized by the bank. Candlish allegedly used his mother’s bank details in order to deceive the DWP. His sister Melanie, to whom he gifted £800,000, was also in court for fraudulently claiming £23,000 in benefits after she too moved to Spain. Candlish, who was not entitled to claim any UK benefits while living abroad, appeared in the court on crutches and was given a nine month suspended sentence after he told the court that he returned to the UK last year penniless, having squandered his winnings.

For us trainee depressives the call of SAD (Seasonal Affected Disorder) is loud and clear. If you chuck in the histrionics of the politicians as they strut and puff their stuff at their party conferences, this really is the season to be glum.
My home town of Brighton hosted the Limp-Dems last week; poor old Manchester gets the ‘New’ (or ‘Old’ - or any other temporal epithet that might make them seem sexy) Labourites this week. Mean-while, here in Brum we’re girding our loins for the gory-Tory onslaught that will surely bring the Aston Expressway, M6 and city centre to a complete stand-still next week. Honestly, haven’t we had enough with all the disruption from the rain? Now we’ve got to get wet all over again with posh-boy Dave and his millionaire playboy mates.
It is going to be murder. You won’t be able to move in or around Birmingham; the bill for hosting will run into millions; and even that most stoic of species the Brummie will be royally pi**ed off by the end of the week. Seems to me you might as well go the whole hog and whip the clocks back this week as well! Come on pile on the pain. Whatever next? Aston Villa losing, maybe? Oops...
Mind you, talking of losing I must not crow too much as Brighton & Hove Albion, aka the Seagulls, did a bit of losing themselves - and at home. They
were playing host to those midland monkeys Bir-mingham City and due to an utter, utter fluke lost by a miserly one-nil to them. They appear to gain much pleasure and laughter in proclaiming that I have a proclivity for the colour pink. Idiots...
Anyway, Mark from Mercia News (Do you remem-ber him? He’s the boss - well, when wife Mandy’s not there - of possibly the best newspaper shop in the West Midlands) he took what only can be described as an unnatural delight in Brighton’s defeat; and it became his reason d’etre to rub my nose in it at every possi-ble juncture. His master stroke was the following: “Oi, Wattsie, I bet you are suffering from SAD at the moment.” Oh, go on then Mark get on with it, what’s that? Chuckle, chortle, giggle... he shakes uncontrolla-bly, hardly able to contain himself at his consummate inventiveness. As tears flow he stutters, “Seagulls Af-fected Disorder, of course!” Great stuff, eh? These Mid-landers do have an engaging sense-of-humour. Well, they seem to think they do...
However, I must say that the two Midlanders who really get my vote is Fran and John Paul. They are sometimes residents of Tamworth and sometimes residents of the Costa Blanca. They circumvented all the wet weather and Tory conference misery by bunk-ing off to Alicante at double speed. If you bump into

The facts about accidents from Linea Directa
Whenever We find ourselves in a difficult or dangerous situation while driving we only have a fraction of a second to take a decision and carry it out correctly. Consequently, when drivers take the wrong decision, the number of accidents resulting in death or injury is tripled, as figures show that 73% of accidents are caused by drivers making a bad decision, compared to 27% in which they acted correctly.
This is the main conclusion of the study ‘Decision-making when driving’ in which 174,000 accidents resulting in injury or death have been analysed.
This means that in the last four years, nearly 130,000 accidents resulting in injury or death could have been avoided if the drivers involved had been able to assess the dangers on the road correctly.
The most common errors are due to drivers being distracted; joining roads incor-rectly; turning badly; illegally overtaking and not maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front. As for types of road, Línea Directa’s report confirms that conventional roads are the most dangerous where 76% of accidents take place. On dual carriageways and motorways, the most common types of accident caused by driver error are rear-end collisions and vehicle crashes, mainly due to sudden braking and the switching of lanes.
DRIVER PROFILEMen aged between 18 and 24 who have held a driving licence for less than two years
and over 65s are those most likely to be involved in accidents due to driver error - the former because they have a lower perception of risk and the latter because they have lost certain skills. On the other hand, women aged between 35 and 64, who have held a driving licence for 15 years or more are those who take the best decisions.

Fabra inaugurates a long-awaited Alzheimer’s Centre in Cox
PRESIDENT OF the Generalitat Alberto Fabra travelled to Cox yesterday to inaugurate a brand new day centre for Alzheimer’s patients. The Valencian administration completed the construction in early 2009 at a cost of €2.2 million. However, the building remained closed until a few weeks ago due to lack of public funding for its operation. From now on the service will be managed by the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s, although there will be a certain dependence on the diligence of the Consell to make payments. For now a grant of €80,000 has been given, to be invested in implementing psychostimulation workshops; counselling for families; physical and cognitive stimulation at home and training and awareness campaigns.

The tapas trailRESTAURANTS AND bars in Javea Port are taking part in a food festival next week when visitors will be able to enjoy ‘The Sea of Tapas.’ Organised by the business association ACEAM and backed by the town hall, people are invited on a journey around the area on Thursday and Friday (11th and 12th October) to sample the seafood on offer.
And with 21 businesses taking part, guests are asked to vote which they believe is the best tapa – and have the chance to win a dinner for two.
It is the first ‘Ruta de tapas marineras’ to be held in the port and each of the participating restaurants and bars will offer a tapa and a drink for a unique price of just 2.50€.

As well as food and drink, the streets will be filled
with live performances by musicians and artists, and the centre of the port, Avenida Jaime 1, will have stands offering a taste of Valencian food and wine.
An ACEAM spokesman said on the Thursday night 20 of the area’s shops were staying open until mid-night to show visitors what was on offer in the port.
“This is an opportunity to enjoy the hospitality of our restaurants and bars and to see what this unique area has to offer all year round,” he said.
The business association will hope to repeat the success of last weekend’s ‘Tapeo’ festival in Javea Old Town. Blessed by good weather despite the storms rag-ing across Spain, hundreds of people turned out for the annual celebration of food and drink – while the family occasion was completed with traditional games for youngsters.

MABS opens in Olivaby Jack Troughton
VOLUNTEERS OF the MABS Cancer Support Group packed the charity’s new shop in Oliva for its official opening on Mon-day – the latest addition to a growing shopping empire.
The premises are the seventh shop opened by MABS and will play a vital part in fund raising – with all money collected helping people ill with cancer.
Councillor Pepe Salazon led a deputation from the town hall and cut the ribbon with MABS President Jacqui Phil-lips MBE and told the charity team: “It is a great pleasure to open this shop. If we can be of any help at the town hall, please do not hesitate to ask.”
The shop is located at Calle Santisimo 2 and the 14-year-old charity has a growing team of 25 in Oliva.
Jacqui explained the first MABS shop was opened in La
Xara eight years ago and continued to be very successful. “We hope this one is just as successful. The money raised here in Oliva will be spent locally helping people in the surrounding area.”
She said branches in La Marina, Gran Alacant and Torre-vieja did not have shops but volunteers continued to raise funds. “And the money they raise is spent in their areas.”
MABS is already helping 12 people in Oliva. Jacqui add-ed: “Over our whole area we are helping so many people with cancer it is almost unbelievable how bad it is – but we do not keep numbers, when people are ill, we just help. “And now we have a shop here we will be asking the town hall for its help in allowing us to organise shows and other fund raising events.”

By Jan GammTHE THIRD annual Dia del Vecino (Neighbours’ Day) in Parque Lo Morant on Sunday was a huge success attracting more than 2,000 residents from 70 different neighbourhood associations to help boost the efforts of associations that work hard to make improvements in the city.
There were Tango workshops; folk dancing and Zumba sessions as well as theatrical and literary activities such as poetry readings, with other tents featuring a variety of techniques such as bobbin craft, patchwork, dried flower craft and a craft
area designated for kiddies to learn crafts, paint and play games. A steel band lent a Caribbean flavour to the celebrations.
For those concerned with their health there were stalls giving information on Diabetes and Spina Bifida and an astrological table for the more spiritual side of life.
BLOOD A mobile blood donation unit did a
roaring trade throughout the day resulting in 37 extractions to the delight of Dr Rosa Baeza who commented: “The response was very positive and exceeded expectation!”

PCN SL is launched

THIS WEEK saw the launch of Paul Cunning-ham Nurses SL; a private nursing company that will run alongside the existing Paul Cun-ningham Nurses charity, which was started in memory of charity President Jennifer’s son, Paul who passed away at just 33 years of age.
Jennifer lived with Paul in a Sue Ryder Hospice for six months before his death and gained first hand experience of what is need-ed for terminal care patients and their fami-lies; none of which is available in Spain.
Many PCN charity patients and families have requested private nursing from the char-ity’s nurses but as a small charity it was not possible to achieve, therefore Jennifer sought legal advice and decided that it was the right time to form an S.L company; PCN.S.L.
SAME STANDARDS
Building on the success and the needs of
the PCN charity, the S.L Company is ready to offer private nursing at home for anyone, of any age, with any condition who needs it.
The same personal care will be given to all PCN.S.L patients as is received by the chari-ty’s patients and vice versa; therefore guar-anteeing the same standards.
All general nursing services are available and the new company will be headed by Jen-nifer Cunningham with the day to day ad-ministration carried out by Tracey Wallace, the company’s Business Coordinator.
The launch of the new company took place at the charity’s offices in La Marina and as well as the new company, a diabetic clinic was also introduced which will be located within the offices.
IMPORTANT
This clinic aims to promote the quality of
life for people with diabetes in order to re-duce the risks of short or long term health complications.
Jennifer told RTN: “These are two new ex-citing ventures and I am very proud to see the charity grow. The private nursing, which was called for and asked for many times, was not possible under the charity but now with the SL Company it is possible.”
The diabetic clinic is particularly impor-tant to Jennifer as she herself is a diabetic and believes that the service provided here in Spain for diabetic patients is inadequate.

More than a one-way street!MARGARET MCCABE and other organisers at Animal Charity APAH were bitterly disappointed when a recently planned fund raising event had to be cancelled, sadly due to lack of support.
Without animal rescue charities stepping in packs of roaming dogs and colonies of cats would increase enormously but the cost of support far outweighs income both in terms of volunteer support and donations.
Unlike some charities that close in the heat of summer, animal shelters cannot abandon their
responsibilities and leave animals without food and care – they continue to operate seven days a week all through the year. Caring for Spain’s strays is a two way street – or eventually there will be no one at the end of the phone to deal with a stray dog or injured cat or abused horse.
If you love animals offer a few hours to an Animal Charity – they’ll welcome you. Or go to a fund-raising event or visit a Charity Shop: a few euros from many can make a huge difference and mean that animal charities will survive the recession.

A thoroughly modern mindA FESTIVAL to celebrate the life of Charles Dickens was under-way this week inspired by the “amazingly relevant” work of an author who died 150 years ago.
Javea resident Nina Davies heard by chance that several friends were involved in celebrating the 200th anniversary of the writer’s birth around the world and wondered about the possibility of a smaller event in the Marina Alta town. And her idea has become a reality. On Monday celebrations start with the visit of international expert Michael Hollington who gave a talk ‘The Planet Dick – An Introduction to Charles Dickens’.
It set out how the writer was influenced by the changes brought by Britain’s Industrial Revolution and the French Revo-lution and his own experiences of poverty and despair – and the international writers influenced by his popular serialised work.
Nina told RTN she imagined many people were asking why there was a Dickens festival in a small Spanish town – and what relevance his work had today. She said: “Dickens is known to almost everyone who has been to school in Brit-ain; in fact you could argue poor teaching managed to put off many a student from enjoying the novels.

“What surprised me was that almost every Spanish friend I spoke to was familiar with several of the books, and that they are being studied at Spanish secondary schools right now, as part of the teaching of English and also as part of world literature.”
Nina said she had asked herself if the world graphically de-scribed by Dickens still had a meaning for people in wealthy
Western countries. “You only have to look at most of these countries today to see examples of the life he wrote about in the 1840s – the gulf between rich and poor increasing every year, corruption in the financial world, corruption in the po-litical world. Dickens knew all about these.”
She added: “In post-war Europe societies did become more equal; countries did provide first-class public health services, that there was universal free public education, and free uni-versity education for able children of all classes.
“Now we see public health systems deteriorating, free uni-versity education disappearing and societies more divided than ever. So the world Dickens described is still amazingly relevant and maybe can offer us some lessons from the past.”
And Nina said many of Dickens’ novels had been serialised for television or made into films. “The fact that he originally wrote for magazines, which lent it to complicated plots and episodes ending in a cliff-hanger makes him well suited to the world of television mini-series. “This is probably why sophisticated long running dramas like The Sopranos and The Wire are sometimes called ‘Dickensian’. In this way he was a very modern author.”

She said Claire Tomalin, author of the recent biography ‘Charles Dickens: A Life’ described how in an article penned by the writer, he argued that poorer people needing to eat at public dining halls should enjoy the same respect and service as if they were the rich eating in expensive restaurants.
Nina added: “In Spain and in Britain we have food banks,
soup runs and so on again, as they did in Dickens’ day. I would like to think the people who use them are treated as Dickens suggested.”
However, she said Dickens was still famous around the world 200 years after his birth for two good reasons. “He was a wonderful story teller who created plots and characters that live on in your memory and imagination. Secondly, he was a great writer. One of my academic friends said to me recently: ‘I read Dickens a lot of course because I teach it – but I read it for pleasure as well, just for the language’.”
Other events being held in English and Spanish include films and talks. The final event is scheduled to be by Vicente Garrido, a Valencia-based criminologist and author, on 7th December, a talk in Castellano with key-points in English, ‘Dickens the Thriller Writer.’

Spanish shoe trade with Japan expected to improveTHE SHOE industry is hoping to revise its current export levels to the Far East following a review of trade tariffs between the EU and China that could open the Japanese market for manufacturers in Spain. The Federation of Spanish Footwear (FICE) is to conclude negotiations covering a proposed free trade agreement that will “allow access to the Japanese market for European indus-trial sectors that are more favourable than today.” Footwear; leather goods; agricultural products; industrial goods; meat products and construction items are all currently affected by existing trade barriers. The Spanish shoe industry, represented by Elche and Elda companies, has participated in trade shows in Tokyo for several years with excellent results.
Students meet the kidsTHREE SWEDISH students have joined the staff at Xabia International College to gain some experience working with youngsters. It is the fourth year students from Scandinavia have travelled to the Costa Blanca as part of a European Union funded initiative. Hanna Christianson, Jaquline Larsson and Emma Niklasson, pictured with pupils, will spend a month working with children in the nursery, foundation and year 5 classes and believe working in the Javea school will help their vocational education and training.

And the idea is not new - they started in europe in

Today the Slow food organisation based in Italy sponsors the concept worldwide, Think organic previously known as the HDRA does so within the UK but in Spain and Portugal it only happens if there is an insightful head teacher. A while back there was a note in the Good Life magazine in Portugal in which we had written an article on ‘Living Well from Your Garden’, that the International School Sao Lourenco was starting to build a new school with provision for a major vegetable garden as a valuable learning experience.

By Louise ClarkeDaTa COLLECTED by the association of Registrars of property, Commercial and personal property of Valencia for the past five years, shows that the UK continues to lead the sale of homes in the Valencia by foreigners. In 2011, Britons made a total of 1,178 sales, which means that almost one in five housing transactions recorded in the Valencia region, were made British expats.
WELL AHEADThe figure supports the social and economic projection of the British community in this region and the purchase and sale of homes by the Spanish citizens is ignored, the UK is well ahead of the 121 other nationalities registered
including Russia, norway and the
netherlands. Given the

moneyWhat does the Spanish budget hold for us? EVEN DURING prosperous times, we tended to approach the budget with a sense of trepidation. Back then it used to be a few pence/centimos on alcohol and cigarettes and a slight increase/decrease in tax – depending on which political party was in power.
Now budget-making is becoming an increasingly serious affair with the potential for individuals to find themselves in financial difficulties depending in which direction the pendulum swings – taxes or services. The direction Spain has been taking is to cut services. In the cabinet on Thursday a state budget was approved for 2013 – again the focus being on cutting spending rather than increasing what’s coming in to the treasury. The belt-tightening measures will save around 20 billion Euros to meet the deficit target for central government and Social Security of 3.8 %. However, there are some glimmers of light. Pensions (for those receiving a Spanish state pension) and school grants are due to rise. State pensions will increase by 1% next year and there will be compensation for any loss of purchasing power this represents. Spending on social services remains an enormous outlay. Although Spain perhaps has a reputation for being ‘tough’ on its unemployed spending on the total social services budget comes in as 63% of the government’s outgoings. What will be controversial in many arenas is the freezing of public sector workers’ pay. This will be the third year in a row that there has been no increase in their salaries. Perhaps making this slightly more palatable is the return of the Christmas bonus this year. Culture is having a hard time of it with cuts in the spending limits of museums. But there is good news for the car industry as owners with vehicles that are more than 12 years old will once more be eligible for a
subsidy if they scrap their old cars and buy new ones. Anyone delighted by winning the lottery might not be too perturbed that lottery prizes of over 2,500 euros now carry a 20% levy. Perhaps more difficult for many will be the absence of tax breaks on mortgage payments on the family home.

Only time will tell if this will all be enough for a return of confidence in Spain. legalApplicable law to inheritance in SpainThe new european Regulation 650/2012: Contesting and challenging a Spanish will granted by British citizens
FINallY ThE European Regulation No 650/2012 has been approved concerning succession and the creation of a European Certificate of succession.
Just like we announced in our previous articles this new regulation was passed and ratified by Spain, and it will apply, as per its article No. 20, even when it affects persons from countries that have not ratified this regulation; such as the UK, Ireland and Denmark. It is our belief that the new regulation may result in the near future in a considerable increase of Court claims directed to contest / challenge or dispute a Will in Spain as we shall see later on in this article.We consider, as previously stated, that the most remarkable fact of this new regulation now in force, is the fact that the
applicable law to the Succession / Inheritance will be the law of the country where the deceased had his habitual residence. Also as per the article 22 the testator/testatrix can opt at the time of making the Will or at time of Death, for his/her national Law.As we have said many times before, this is very important. For example, if you live permanently in Spain and decide to leave in your Will all your assets to your wife; according to the new regulation now in force, if you do not opt for your national law in the Will and you pass away living in Spain, it could be understood that the applicable law to the Inheritance should be the Spanish Succession Law. Therefore your children as forced heirs (according to Spanish Law) would inherit at least 2/3 of your Estate. This opens a new door to contesting / challenging or disputing the Wills of British citizens living in Spain, as well as to many possible problems that could arise at the time of formalising the succession (signing the inheritance deed), if the Will does not respect the legitimate and forced heirs’ rights. This same situation already existed even before the approval of the new Regulation as the Supreme Court of Spain in its Order No. 849/2002 pointed out in a case of an English national domiciled and with all assets in Spain, accepting the ‘renvoi’
from English to Spanish Law, that the Spanish Law was the applicable law to his inheritance, and therefore, accepted the challenge / annulment of his Will, declaring the deceased’s children forced heirs of his Inheritance as per the Spanish Inheritance Law.. It is important to know that the Regulation shall apply to the succession of persons who die on or after 17th August 2015 but it is also interesting to note that if the deceased has chosen the applicable law for his succession prior to this date (17th August 2015) that choice will be valid if it meets the conditions of the regulation or if it is valid in application of the rules of private international law which was in force at the time when the choice was made.Therefore, if you, for example, are an English national who would like to leave your assets to your wife then please have your Will revised by an expert qualified lawyer who can advise you how to protect your wishes and succession whether you pass away before or after 17th August 2015.The Supreme Court of Spain on its Order No. 849/2002 made these points clear but now with the recent approval of Regulation 650/2012 it is even more clear and definite.If you or someone you know needs advice in this matter then please do not hesitate to contact us, we are experts in this field of law.

Spain’s premier Mariano Rajoy has been betrayed. Nobody should be entirely surprised if he and the Spanish arch-nationalists in his circle offer a condign riposte, and bring down the entire temple on the heads of the creditor powers.He bit the bullet and agreed to the highly intrusive terms of a €100bn eurozone rescue for the Spanish banking system on a specific understanding: that the ESM bail-out fund would ultimately take over the burden by re-capitalising Spain’s banks directly.This deal has been breached. Can we believe anything that the Chancellor of Germany, the prime minister of Holland, and the prime minister of Finland say from now on? The EMU rescue edifice is built on sand.You might say Mr Rajoy had no choice. But he did. There were those whispering in his ear that Spain should instead retake control over its own monetary, exchange, and sovereign policy levers, and break out of its debt-deflation trap.
Such a course might or might not be disastrous for Spain, depending on your analysis of EMU’s structural flaws, but it would certainly be disastrous for German and Dutch banks. (Given that it would cause the collapse of monetary union in the worst possible way).The Spanish bubble was after all a joint venture. Spain was flooded with cheap capital from Germany and Holland that it could not prevent or control under the EMU system. Did the German and Dutch regulators recognise the danger, or try to stop the excesses? Not really. They were complicit.The ECB’s uber-lose money (to help Germany when it was in slump) led to negative real interest rates for Spain – minus 2pc for years – that fuelled a massive credit boom. Policy was far too lax for a fast-growing Tiger economy.Did the Spanish make big mistakes? Of course, but the ECB and the European Commission did not make that critique at the relevant moment. Be that as it may, Mr Rajoy now learns that the AAA trio will not permit direct re-capitalisation of Spain’s ‘legacy’ banks by the ESM, even after the new European bank regulator is up and running.The burden will fall entirely on Spain, or so it seems. Cast the net wider for income Pay bankers’ bonuses in bonds, EU report recommendsTOP BANKERS should have part of their bonuses paid in bonds and a lid put on the total amounts that can be distributed to staff, a high level re-port from the EU suggests on Tues-day in the latest effort by policymak-ers to prevent a rerun of the 2008 banking crisis.With regards to bankers’ pay, Li-ikanen recommends that bankers are paid in ‘bail-in’ bonds - which are intended to prop up banks as a last resort – and restrictions put on the size of bonuses relative to salaries.“Furthermore, a regulatory approach to remuneration should be consid-ered that could stipulate more abso-lute levels to overall compensation (for example that the overall amount paid out in bonuses cannot exceed paid-out dividends),” the report said.
Your money matters questions and answerDEAR RTN: Under the new QROPS rules that came out in April 2012 does it allow for loans to be taken out against a QROPS.
Answer: The new QROPS guidelines have made it quite clear that under HMRC rules a minimum of 70% of the pension pot must be used to produce an income, so no more than 30% cash can be taken from a QROPS and the minimum age for this is 55 years old. Any companies that offer anything else are not adher-ing to HMRC rules and this means at the end of the day individuals that use these schemes could be subject to a HMRC unauthorised pay-ment charge of 40% plus a HMRC unauthorised pay-ment surcharge of 15%.

John asks:DEAR AUNTY: In the UK my broadband ISP is Sky. I have an apartment in Villajoyosa and would like to take my laptop with me when I come to Spain. If I buy a ‘pay as you go’ dongle in the UK when using it in Spain I will have roaming charges. Could you please advise whether I can buy PAYG dongle in Spain. If so which would be the best provider?
Aunty says: Many providers supply an internet dongle: Yoigo, Masmovil, Vodafone, Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and others. Which is best is open to debate. The best value for money will change from provider to provider and will also depend on how often and how you will be using it. The various providers will offer various deals, free minutes, and limited or unlimited download quotas. For example, one provider may offer usage at €1 per day but it is limited bandwidth; another may offer €3 per day but it is unlimited bandwidth.The main issue is though, is that it depends on what the 3G signal is like in the area in which you will be using it. 3G is how many of these dongles work, and low or no 3G signal in your area, and then it is not worthwhile with a dongle. If it is for very low use, then perhaps the simplest way is to buy a coffee or beer at your local bar that has free Wifi for their clients!

I have done this quite a few times in the past and had no problems but now every time I attempt to accept their invitation to express my views I type the message and after accepting their conditions and click send, a message comes up saying ‘this web page has expired’ - is this a setting on my PC or do you think the problem is with the newspaper?
Aunty says: I have just tried to post a message on a story, and as I am not a registered user I get a ‘Please register’ webpage. I have registered and can happily post - so there is no issues with their side of things. So, my second question is, are you a registered user of Daily Mail online, and do you access the site with your username / email, and a password? If you are a registered user, then perhaps logging out of the Daily Mail site and re-logging, inputting your user name and password may help. Alternatively, you could try
another browser, like Google Chrome, or Firefox. Hopefully using another browser will cure any issues and problems your Internet Explorer has.Response: Hi just to let you know that I re-logged in and sent a ‘view’ which was successful: Cheers!
Robert asks:HOLA AUNTY: I have a problem with downloading into Utorrent (music) and then into windows media player. Un-til recently (approximately three weeks) it was fine. I keep getting message to update to Utorrent plus 29€. Is this the only way? Or can I go another route? I have Windows Home Premium. Hope you can help, you have in the past.
Aunty says: The makers of Utorrent want to make money, and why not when many people use their software for downloading? This is why they ask for payment for upgrades to newer versions of their software: I am assuming they are asking you to upgrade to the ‘Utorrent Plus’ version, and you are using their ‘Utorrent Free’ version. The solution is simple: if you do not want to pay then don’t upgrade: if you want to upgrade then pay. If you don’t want to keep getting the update messages then these should be able to be turned off in the Utorrent menu system - Options – Preferences. Personally I have been using version 1.8.3 with no issues at all and have no desire to upgrade from it.

This app basically does exactly what you would expect it to do – it warns you by vibrating your phone and a little rain icon appearing on your phone when there is rain or snow forecast nearby, how far away it is, and what area it covers.
You can watch what is coming by the up-to-date radar animation. Even more convenient, the supplied widgets can help you monitor the precipitation situation without any alarms. The data used originates from governmental weather services so you can keep a close eye on the weather from wherever you are.
This is a free app but there is a paid for app which is only 3.50€ to download which does have a lot more features and is more customisable but the free app for us expats living in Spain should suffice. Available to download from Google Play on Android mobile phones.

ONE OF my favourite stories is the wonderful tale of serendipity and love that has a backdrop in the terrifying days of the Nazi rule, and centres around a Concentration Camp. Many have asked me where were the Angels when all these bad things were allowed to happen, and why did so many have to die? We must be grateful however for those who were rescued, those who survived at all the odds and, sadly we must never forget the many who gave their lives in such cruel times.
Albert was sent as a young lad to Auschwitz and had to watch his Father and his Uncle die of malnutrition as both were broken men working physically amid a constant stream of dead bodies. Albert was a willing and happy fresh faced boy, and he abandoned fear knowing that for sure he would be amidst those who were gassed, or would one day stand with a pit behind him and feel the bullet of death and fall into a convenient grave. He had seen nothing but dead bodies, filth and fear. Sent out often on missions between the huts, Albert was able to wander close to the fences on the perimeter, and he mused on freedom and a World where he didn’t have to ever be hungry or dirty. One day as he was walking something wrapped in a handkerchief was flung over the fence. He saw a young girl running away and quickly he hid the apple she had carefully wrapped for him, risking her life as she did so. He hid and ate the apple and was so grateful to have fresh food, the little apple was the very best he had ever eaten.
Next day Albert was on his travels, waiting until the Guards were preoccupied in eating a substantial lunch. She was there again, by the wire but this time she didn’t run from him, her gift this time was a hunk of black rye bread
and she smiled as he ate it, then off she ran for her life once more. Each and every day the brave girl came to the wire, throwing potatoes and apples and dry biscuits.
One day the camp was liberated by the Allies. Albert was rescued by a Jewish freedom charity and he sailed to a new life in New York along with many young adults who were alone and in need of repatriation. Albert studied and became a taxi driver. He didn’t want to ever have a boss, he wanted his freedom. He moved to Brooklyn and set up home. One night a buddy rang Albert and asked him to go on a double date together with two young ladies. Shy Albert said no, but at the last minute he changed his mind, after an Angel came to him in a dream. There was something very familiar about his blind date, Rosa. Albert was bowled over by her, was it love at first sight? No, Rosa was that brave little girl who daily brought food to help keep Albert alive. She had lost her family, and had also made the great journey across to a new all American life.
Rosa Herzof married Albert Dieter the very next Spring. They raised a fine family, and their great grand children tell their story with pride, to this very day. They told me their tale one rainy stormy night in New Jersey after a show when I picked up on the name Rosa and an apple…it’s what started the whole thing off !
However dark it may seem to be there is a light that calls out to us and beckons us on safely. Never give up and never forget that miracles can and do happen, and faith is always and all ways rewarded.

Kerry it is great that your Mother has chosen to come through for you. Love makes for good contact and your own values of affection and love are yours, nobody has any right to question them. There is good and bad in the way your Mother is coming through. The good news is that Mother is coming through free of pain, showing you that nothing can possibly hold her back now, but this very often means that she was in pain before she left the Earth Plane. Step by Step Spanish Part 2
You WoN’T find this form in that big white verb book you have propping up the furniture in your living room as it doesn’t officially count as a tense, but from the point of view of communication it fulfills an important function.
I ended up the article scaring you to death about pronunciation. Actually, about half an hour after I’d sent the article off, I realized I could have made it even worse by highlighting the “b” “v” confusion. That would have given us “¿Qué va a hacer?” potentially sounding like “kebasé”. Incidentally, if you were to ask a Spanish person if that is what they say, they are sure to deny it. The same happens to us in English, we don’t think we say “hambag” instead of “handbag” and would deny the accusation – but actually we do, unless we’re Lady Bracknell of course.
Right, let’s get back to the point!! There are a few more things to say about this “going to” form. As well as describing intentions, it also describes what we can call “predictions based on present evidence”. For example, we look up at the heavens, see the storm clouds gathering and say “Va a llover” (It’s going to
rain), or we watch a car heading for a tree and say “Va a chocar” (It’s going to crash). We would assume this is not an intention; it is just something we can see is inevitably going to happen based on our observation.
Two more points before we leave this one behind. As English speakers we should be very careful about translating directly across from one language to the other. There are instances when we have to use this “future of intention” form in Spanish when in English we don’t have to. For example, in English I can say “What are you doing after the party?” or “I’m phoning Bill tomorrow”. As these sentences refer to the future, in Spanish we have to say “¿Que vais a hacer después de la fiesta?” (Notice I’ve opted for the plural “you” this time) and “Voy a llamar a Bill mañana”.
Finally, here’s another little trick. It will be easier for those who have learnt the past continuous tense (the –aba one) but really it can be used straight away by anybody! We can put this form into the past to say “I was going to”. This is a good phrase for making lame excuses. I will now elaborate. The present tense of “ir” which we are current
using goes like this: voyvasvavamosvaisvan
If we put this same verb into the past continuous tense it goes like this: ibaibasibaíbamosibaisiban
So, for example, if “vamos a” means “we ARE going to”, then “íbamos a” means “we WERE going to”.
Get it?Now when someone catches you out on the phone you can say: “¡oh José! ¡Te iba a llamar!” (oh Joe, I was going to phone you!) and it sounds as insincere in Spanish as it does in English. Welcome back to the real world of communication!
LAST WEEK we started looking at different ways of talking about the future, focusing on the most common one, the future of intention (voy a, vamos a etc.)

Tinnitus and sleepABOUT HALF the people who are troubled by their tinnitus have poor sleep – which means the other half sleep well.If you have tinnitus, you are not bound to have poor sleep. Worrying about sleep loss is one of the things most likely to make tinnitus (and sleep loss) worse!
Sleep disturbance affects almost everyone at some time in their lives. Mild sleep disturbances are very common. A normal night’s sleep has several stages – from light to deep sleep, and includes several ‘awakenings’. Natural awakenings are often forgotten by the morning, but if a person worries about his or her tinnitus during them they will last longer and become more memorable. Tinnitus does not actually wake people up, but it can be the first thing that a person is aware of in very quiet surroundings when a natural awakening has occurred.
The pattern of sleep changes with age: as people grow older they experience less very deep sleep and more awakenings; sleep becomes lighter and more fragmented and there is an enormous range of sleep times.
THINGS TO AVOIDusing alcohol to sleep - this disrupts sleep patterns and makes it more difficult to go back to sleep.Caffeine - stimulants will help keep you awake.Physical exercise - Exercise near bedtime may tire you but it disrupts the sleep cycle.Mental exercise - Computer games, crosswords, writing reports, etc have the same effect.Don’t try too hard to go to sleep - Switch the light off and relax.Don’t eat during the night - The body gets used to it and demands more.
TO AID SLEEPRelax before sleep – Tapes, breathing exercises, etc.Wind down one hour before bedtime – Warm bath, milky drink.Go to bed when you feel sleepy, not at a set time but get up at the same time each morning no matter how tired you are.If you are still awake after 30 minutes, get out of bed and relax in another room for a while. Go back to bed when you feel sleepy. Repeat this process if necessary.Talk to your doctor - Sleep loss can be related to some other medical conditions that may be treatable.Lack of sleep can aggravate stress; stress can aggravate tinnitus. Worrying about both or either can cause depression and make things worse. you need to break the cycle.

AECC NewsTHE PINK Ladies presence at the Civic Centre in Playa flamenca resulted in many people drop-ping in to book mammograms and smear tests - and men at-tending to book prostate tests. These tests, part of the AECC early detection screening pro-gramme, are vitally important to the unfortunate people who develop this evil disease - the sooner it is detected the better.
The new ‘winter hours’ for the Civic Centre opening times are between 10am and 1pm every Wednesday and the AECC Torrevieja office is open Monday to Thursday between 10am and 1pm.
Torrevieja Stroke Support Open Day and Fun Day
THE TORREVIEJA Stroke Support Charity presented its first Open day and Fun day on Saturday when stroke survivors, carers and volunteers manned a dozen stalls and tables comprising games, crafts, books, bric-a-brac, face painting and more.
Blood pressure and advice was offered by 3C’s nurses and refreshments including
delicious home-made cakes were served by Stroke Support volunteers.
Peter Hull provided music and song and an impressive 700€ was raised, prompting a grateful committee to thank all visitors for their generosity and support.
The occasion enabled Torrevieja Stroke Support launch their new and improved website: www.torreviejastrokesupport.com which continues to be developed. The site offers information about TSS and support and advice for stroke sufferers.
The group also intends in the future to open a branch for Spanish-speaking sufferers of Stroke, run by Spanish therapists: more information on this will be announced later.

Life peopleLa Manga Cricket all out for MABS Murcia
MABS CANCER Support Group in Murcia is the 2012 nominated charity of La Manga Cricket Club and they recently held the annual La Manga Twenty/Twenty competition which was aimed at raising more funds to help those affected by cancer in the Murcia region.
Two UK and two Spanish teams contested the trophy and, at the end of three days of fiercely competitive cricket, it was the UK Asians who claimed victory, downing La Manga in the final.
The first two games on Friday morning matched Andalucia against the UK Asians and Chorleywood against the hosts, La Manga.
Andalucia’s team included the three Barratt brothers and the captain of the Combined Colleges CC. UK Asians, past winners of the competition, again looked a formidable combination on paper, with players coming from several regions, including Bristol, Derby and London, and they proved way too strong for the Southern Spanish side.
CRICKET LADIES CAPTAINA sports dinner was held for the cricketers
on Saturday evening at the Hotel Las Lomas on La Manga, with special guest speaker, Baroness Rachel Heyhoe-Flint OBE DL. Rachel is probably the best known female cricketer in England and is a regular visitor to La Manga. She was a member of the English women’s cricket team from 1960 to 1982.
She was captain of England from 1966 to 1978, and was unbeaten in six Test series. She was captain when England won the inaugural Women’s Cricket World Cup, held in England in 1973.
The second speaker was John Dye, a former English first class cricketer who made his debut in 1962 with Kent and played for them until 1971, moving on to Northamptonshire where he retired in 1977.
He also spent a season in South Africa with Eastern Province and represented the MCC. During his first class career he took almost 1000 wickets and scored as many runs. John now resides in Spain and is Chairman of the Spanish League.

La Manga Cricket Club presented a cheque for 600€ to MABS Murcia Director, Lyn Baines, representing the funds raised by the Club with raffles held at the MABS Picnic in the Park event, the La Manga Cricket Club Charity Tournament and sales of kit donated by the ‘Barmy Army’.
“We’re delighted to be associated with La Manga Cricket Club” Lyn told RTN, “and we’re looking forward to the Lady Taverners’ 20/20 Charity Cricket Tournament which will be held over the weekend of 12-15 October.”

The Soul Power story
NEW SOUL and Motown band Soul Power are about to hit the Costa Blanca, a five piece band consisting of founder member JJ Soulman, lead singer and guitarist; Elvar Masson on keyboards; Duncan Phillips playing bass guitar; Kenny Dee on Saxophone and on drums Ray Prentice - all the band contribute to backing vocals.
The band was hand-picked by JJ to select funky soul musicians to play music that isn’t played much by live bands: classic Soul and Tamla Motown. The band plays music by such artists as The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Edwin Star, Sam and Dave, Otis Redding, Booker T and The MGs, Wilson Picket and many more.
The band has only been together for a few weeks but as experienced musicians it didn’t take long to have over 30 songs ready to perform - the band are currently at Mosquitoes, La Florida every Friday with more gig dates to follow.

Fancy a kick-about?
WHEN WE first came to Spain we were intrigued to find prickly pears growing in the garden but trying to pick them and get to the fruit inside was painful in the extreme. Then our Spanish builder told us to kick them around the garden to remove the prickles and then we could peel them and eat them. Well that first year after what seemed a bumper
crop we pureed them, bottled them, froze them and even made ice cream out of them but since then, apart from eating

Spanish use the fruit and you can often see them for sale in markets and shops but I have never seen them use or even sell the leaves, whereas in Mexico and the South West
USA they are used extensively. Known there as Nopales they
are readily available fresh or
canned. If you want to try them be aware of where they come from and use them fresh, young and small preferably.
Prepare them by very carefully removing the spines and boil whole for 20 minutes in a little salted water. At this point to give a bit of extra flavour a few minutes on the BBQ squeezed with lime is nice. They are then usually cut into strips before using in a recipe such as a salsa or relish with chillies, tomatoes, red onions, coriander, lime, salt, pepper & olive oil which can be used in Tacos or served as a vegetable with something like a corn and red pepper dressing.
Beware of where you harvest your prickly pears as many older plants were planted near the outdoor privy where they thrived on…well as I say be aware of where yours come from, I’m not sure I’d want to eat any of those other ones.
Another plant I had not experienced in the UK was the Cardo or Cardoon. I had seen this for sale and some friends here had cooked it for us in a Cocido but I had never really been inclined to buy any. Then a local grower gave us some plants for the garden and armfuls of the stuff to eat so I had to have a go and see what I could do with it. A brief look in my Janet Mendel book told me how to prepare them by peeling the stalks, rubbing with lemon, cutting into 2 inch lengths and cooking in acidulated water for up to an hour.
Well they were alright like this as a veg but still too bitter
to really enjoy. Speaking to local Spanish (they are called penca here) gave us a few more traditional ideas. Apparently they are eaten with pulpo (octopus) but are mostly used in stews or casseroles (cocidos) where they soak up the flavours. Of course we thought that we could do better by bringing them up to date trying to use them in stir-fry as well as tempura batters but I’m afraid to say mother knows best and in this case traditional albeit old fashioned is better.
We eventually tried them in a Thai rabbit curry and they were delicious, tasting just like the pea aubergines we have trouble sourcing here for an authentic taste. Looking into ideas a bit further showed that they are very popular in Italy where they are dipped or smothered in a very garlicky sauce, yummy. So they may not be much on their own but are great with robust flavours: now I’ve got the taste for them I just hopes the ones we’ve planted grow well this autumn.
NEVER WAS a fan of football, or soccer as it’s called in America, and it’s really hard to play on your own, even kicking it against a wall loses its appeal after about ten minutes.

We went for a system that could supply all 92 properties on our community; we started by having a EGM giving people options and finally we chose Villamartin Satellites for the package they offered. This was quite a long process trying to meet all people’s needs and I would suggest that people ask a lot of questions to make sure you get what you need.Before getting an agreement from the community we needed to look at where the dish would be located, what civil works need to be done (i.e.) do we need to put cables across a road, also the type of cable and boosting equipment to give us the best signal in all areas. We wanted just one dish so went for a 3.2metre dish, this was done after agreement with our community at the EGM, it means that the skyline is not littered by dozens of small dishes.Guarantees on equipment including boxes and after sales service need to be discussed. We are satisfied that Villamartin Satellite meets this arrangement. The TV boxes offered cover basic FREESAT to HD Sky packages; this covers the need for the rental and residents that are here permanently.A good all round package that our community own at a reasonable price which included fibre optic cabling.

Life peopleAfternoon tea in aid of Age ConcernA TRADITIONAL afternoon tea was held at the El Mirador in Eagles Nest this week in aid of Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur.
The idea for a regular fundraising event came after the success of the Ascot Ladies’ Day event which was held at the bar and restaurant in June and will become a monthly feature. The cakes are all provided by Juanita, an amateur but very good cake maker who lives locally and the pastries and sandwiches were provide by El Mirador.
More than 40 people took part in this week’s afternoon tea although the bar can accommodate 60 people. The cost per head is just 6€ which includes sandwiches, pastries and sausage rolls as well as a selection of delicious cakes and of course, tea and coffee.
RAFFLEJustine, owner of El Mirador told RTN that she plans to hold
an afternoon tea on the last Wednesday of every month and if other charities would like to utilise the event as a fundraising activity, they are welcome to contact her on 667 979 173.
A raffle was held, with prizes donated by the bar and other local businesses and the money that came as a result of the raffle was donated to Age Concern.
One couple even chose to use the event to celebrate their 32nd wedding anniversary. Dave and Ann Wade had their very own table for two complete with love heart shapes cakes and biscuits.

Pistoleros donate to HAH Costa BlancaA DONATION of €900 was given by the Pistoleros to Help At Home Costa Blanca at their Presentation Dance event on 22nd September at El Rancho in Los Montesinos.
The evening was well attended and great fun with many Line Dancers taking to the floor including Norah, President of Help At Home Costa Blanca who needed a lesson to join them.
The Pistoleros hold regular functions at various venues where you can join in with their Line Dancing if you like. Red Strokes, who provided the entertainment, was presented with an honoury membership certificate of the Pistoleros due to his commit-ment to them. Everybody and his brother were locked on to the battle for No 1 in 1995 when Oasis were favourites to get there with ‘Roll With It’ but it was Blur who had the last laugh when their single ‘Country House’ became the new No 1. About 5 years ago Albarn spoke out on the subject saying, “I didn’t exactly find the row funny and it really hurt at the time, Noel used to take the p*** out of me constantly, they were like the bullies I had to put up with at school.”
But it’s not all handbags at ten paces as Albarn and Liam Gallagher made up at this year’s Brit awards when they hugged and partied on a boat together after the show, and it could well be that Liam might have called his new mate Damon for some consolation last week after the high octane sibling rivalry that exists between the two Gallagher brothers was cemented big time when Noel didn´t turn up to Liam’s 40th Birthday bash.
Oasis broke up three years ago after Liam threw a plum at Noel’s head.
Jerry plans to rock the ballroom
It’s starting to rumble in Welsh WalesREALITY SHOWS keep rearing their ugly heads on TV and the latest offering that aired on MTV last week called ‘The Valleys’ has come in for a bit of a pasting from a couple of Welsh MPs. The programme follows a group of young people from small towns in Wales who are supposed to be pursuing their dreams in Cardiff.
Welsh MP Chris Bryant told Wales Online: “It’s called ‘The Valleys’ but it doesn’t happen in the Valleys, it happens in Cardiff, and the constant boob-flashing and genitalia-discussing doesn’t please everyone.” It is of course what young people do and always will do, but do we need it packaged into to some cheap and nasty TV show for prime time viewing?
The MP then said: “It’s all about people getting very drunk and being as de-liberately outrageous as possible – that’s not what the Valleys are like, and you would have thought they would have had at least one person that liked the Val-leys on a programme called The Valleys.” Meanwhile, Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood slammed the series, calling it “…a dull, cheap, tacky and an over-promoted television programme.” Not a fan then…
THE ROLLING Stones have been the kings of Rock ‘n Roll for the last 50 years and you would think them stepping into the world of ballroom dancing the most unlikely of scenarios.
However, this could well happen after Mick Jagger’s former girlfriend Jerry Hall, who is part of this autumn’s ‘Strictly’, said in an interview on Radio 2: “I wouldn’t mind dancing to some of the Rolling Stones’ tracks when the show kicks off next month, and Mick’s been helping me with some ideas for the music.” I can see it now: Jerry and partner Anton Du Beke waltzing to ‘I Can’t Get No Satisfaction’ - love it!
On her partner Jerry said: “He’s so wonderful - he’s elegant, he’s sophisticated and he’s the most beautiful dancer, and we’re having lovely lunches together!” Jerry kept her best comments to last on the Radio 2 interview when she said: “I wouldn´t call myself a dancer, but If you’re going to do foolish things, do them with enthusiasm.” Then the former model nailed it when she added: “Like I say, I’m not much of a dancer, but I’m very good at posing.” On that we all agree, Jerry...

OnLy SIx accident black spots of the 150 across the country are signposted. A report from the AEA, Euro-pean Motorists Association says that the most danger-ous black spot in the coun-try is at the 415 km point on the n-630 in Béjer, Salaman-ca, where accidents are 120 times the national average.
There has been a great reduction in the danger on the roads, down four times between 2006 and 2010. The report says that im-provement is down to bet-ter roads ‘and not for the points or fines issued’.
The report says that 47% of accidents are caused in part by the state of the road, and the authors are worried the cuts could delay urgent action to improve these in-frastructures.

Using the Trafico forms via the Trafico website
TRAFICO COnSTAnTLy changing their website, usually for the better but whereas before a drop-down menu at the page-heading was until recently used to click on print, now, once you are on the document page, that is the form - we have to right-click to bring up the menu. We need to keep checking the website to chart the changes.
THE PROCEDURE IS AS FOLLOWS:Go to http://www.dgt.es/portal/es/

This is the list of all the forms that we can download for all transactions.
Use the language as in your local
region, e.g. Castellano, etc…Select the form you need, in this case with a vehicle being sold to a new owner or:
‘Impresos de solicitud de transmisión de vehículos’. Click on the word for the required language, e.g. ‘Castellano’... The form will appear on your screen.
you may enter most of the details on screen before printing, typing on the spaces with a light blue background. However you cannot save the form to your PC files, only print it – 2 x A5 copies or more.
When you are happy the form is completed correctly as far as you can go (plus signatures etc), right-click while the pointer is on the form and
select ‘Print’ in the menu. normally you just select ‘Print’ and two forms - A5 size - will be printed in landscape on an A4 sheet of paper. This is one for Trafico and one or more copies for you. But they must be printed as they have to be signed.
note that all the forms are in the Trafico web-site and at the page noted above, in the left column is a list of the groupings for drivers, cars or ‘coche’, etc. you will need to click on the other groupings to obtain the forms for other transactions and follow the same procedures. Please note that you cannot save a completed form on your computer. you may complete it on screen before printing it.

Does Fergie have a hole to fill?Personally, I think the criticism is harsh but in recent seasons, when talking Manchester United, everyone seems to agree that they are lacking in central midfield. everyone that is, but Fergie.
The United manager’s apparent failure to tackle the issue in the way the pundits say he should makes you wonder though. after all, is it really credible to think that one of the greatest managers the game has ever seen has a blind spot to one of the key areas of any football team? Is that really likely? or could it be that Ferguson has a different view of what he wants his midfield to do in an era of the game where possession stats and ball retention seem to be the be-all and end-all. surely given all his achievements in the game, sir alex deserves the benefit of the doubt over any pundit?
There are those however who look at United in their current incarnation, look at a midfield that regularly contains two players in their late 30s and Michael Carrick and think that Fergie has lost it.
after losing the Premier league title to Man City last season, it’s logical to think that Ferguson would’ve been reaching for the cheque book to bring in the kinds of players that would allow United compete more effectively in the middle of the park - but transfer window after transfer window, Fergie reinforces elsewhere. His apparent inaction surely hints that he is actually relatively satisfied with his midfield.
Having watched United closely over recent seasons (when they have remained competitive despite what many see as midfield failings), it seems clear that Ferguson doesn’t see the function of his midfield the way his detractors do. He’s not hung up on possession stats and ball retention, or the idea that you need to dominate the ball to win a game. There’s
more than one way to skin a cat, after all.Instead, Fergie wants intelligent, industrious and quick
thinking players in midfield who can get the ball out wide and forward quickly, accurately and efficiently. He likes pacey wingers and overlapping fullbacks who present a goal threat and offer quality of delivery. He’s more about bodies in the box than bodies in midfield. Watch United play and consider how many players get themselves into the danger zone in every attack, how many players in the team offer a genuine goal threat, and how many options to pass the ball forward United have in the final third.
over the years, Ferguson has developed United sides that can mix styles and adapt, but, whenever possible, he’ll play quick, incisive football. United can be patient and pick teams apart, but by and large, Fergie prefers lightning strikes, and his personnel choices, particularly in midfield and wide positions, tend to reflect that approach. Given his wealth of experience, perhaps we should just accept his apparent mantra that you don’t have to play like Barcelona to win football matches.

THIs WeeK’s competition was the first in the President’s Cup - a series of four matches with all four to count, the venue being the Pedrera.
We had not fished here for some two - three years as the embalse was filled, covering all the area where we fished. The venue’s water is now dropping like a stone as they are taking out as much water as possible - well that’s what it looks like! The water’s edge where it is dropping so fast is a quagmire and all the gear had to be left up the bank some several meters away. The fishing was also not up to much with five anglers blanking (memoirs of another venue).
also note for any new anglers to the area, if you do fish here and it starts to rain pack up immediately and get off, because if you don’t you will get stuck: gruas will not go off road to get you out.

The 6th round of the Winter league Cup was fished at the embalsa de argos on 25th september.
We are now desperately in need of rain as I have only once seen this lake with lower water levels in the last eleven years of fishing there, the fishermen can now see that the snags we have encountered previously on the feeder are not trees but large stones.
on the cold side of the lake it looks more like the blast site at a quarry. The water is clear with hardly any algae but the fishing was patchy and with stan the Man back to his winning ways on his return from the UK taking the honours.

Torry TraVelleD to Denia last sunday to play CD Denia. Both teams came into the game on equal points. The game was gen-erally a scrappy affair with both defences on top. Torry had chances to score notably through Cuco ros in the first half and Jose Manuel in the second-half but the chances went begging. The opposition also had a couple of chances which Manolo dealt with well. The game was heading for stale-mate until the 85th minute when a sloppy pass from Manu amores gave the opposi-tion possession and they moved the ball forward and wide and the cross into the box was swept home. Time ran out on Tor-ry. Torry were unlucky not to come home with a point with neither side really deserv-ing to win the game. on sunday Torry are at home to 4th place atletico saguntino kick-off 5.00 pm. ernesto should start for Torry and probably new striker Koeman. Be there.
WeeK 3 of the darts league and Foley’s topped the table with an impressive 10-0 win against Casper’s B, leaving them as the only team to maintain a 100% winning start. However the Casper’s a vs. Jukebox game had to be post-poned so Casper’s a still have an opportunity to go joint top of the league on 6 points if they can win their match in hand. Cavalier, still missing a few of their big players from last year, struggled against the family team of el niu B los-ing 3-7 while el niu a equalled their namesakes by taking the game 7-3 against new-comers The local. all THe way through the ryder Cup last weekend, I kept trying to spot the 13th member of the Usa team. according to the home crowd, he was called yudaman Indahole and his name was repeatedly shouted out when one of his Usa team mates hit a shot that went anywhere remotely in the right direction. as it happens, the Usa team could have done with an extra player on sunday, such was the ferocity and excellence of europe’s fight back. never on foreign soil had a team recovered from a 4 point deficit on the final day and their 14.5 – 13.5 victory will forever be known as the ‘Miracle of Medinah’.
after a few dodgy selections on the opening two days, Captain Jose Maria olazabal got his singles line up just right, stacking the early matches with some of europe’s form players. and talking of form players, what a performance by Ian Poulter who remained unbeaten over the three days and took his ryder Cup record to played 15, won 12, lost 3. as the leader board on the last day started turning blue, so the home team started to lose their nerve and the home crowd their volume. sure, europe caught a few breaks such as the monster putt holed by Justin rose on the penultimate green on his way to victory over Phil Mickelson but in the end, with seve undoubtedly looking down on them, I firmly
believe that europe won the Cup, rather than the Usa losing it. If only they could have tracked down yudaman Indahole...they might just have hung on to the trophy.
cLUB cLAssJust one more line on the ryder Cup. While some of the crowd comments directed at the european players, their
wives and girlfriends were just vile,
inside the ropes the american players got it right. They worked the crowd up when they needed to but always demanded quiet and appreciation for their opponents when necessary. none more so than Phil Mickelson who actually applauded Justin rose during his round on the final day. What a Gent!
enD of The Linerio Ferdinand has been a fine servant to Manchester United and to england but anyone with a modicum of knowledge can see that his international career is over. Having watched his last two club matches, you can make a case for him being at fault for

THE TIME has come again, as it does twice every year, where the local golf courses feel they can rip off the golfers of South Eastern Spain for the price of a green fee. Just because they have a good amount of bookings they increase their prices sometimes by as much as one hundred percent over what they were charging in summer when they were begging us to come out to play golf.
Having recently taken RTN Golf Club to a golf course that was not previously amongst the courses our members favoured we paid 30€ per head including buggy last month. Out of loyalty and because the course was so helpful taking a booking at such short notice I wanted to book again for October 9th. I could not believe it when I was quoted 58€ per player including buggy - nearly twice what we paid in September and wholly out of order in my opinion.
What really disappointed me was the manager’s flat refusal to negotiate. I know I am not alone when it comes to this sort of thing and feeling that the local golfer is just getting ripped off by the golf courses. There seems to be little or no respect shown to the
loyal local customer who supports the golf courses through thick and thin.
Many people now use third parties to book their golf for them and this is not helping the situation as these people are paid on commission so it is better for them to have higher prices. The local golf societies are the ones who have the power here and it is vital that they stand firm against the rip off merchants and agree deals for the whole of the year that are fair. In recent years clubs have agreed to honour prices offered to golf society members even if they play as just a four ball and these are the clubs that deserve our support.
We all know that the golf clubs are businesses and want profits - that’s fine but they must be taught to respect the people who support them the most. The holidaymaking golfer usually has his green prices agreed before leaving home so they don’t concern me as much as the local golfer who cannot afford to play the game at the times of the year when the clubs get greedy. There is certainly a way the clubs can support us and all they need to do is talk to us and offer something that is fair to all. We are not stupid, we will all accept fairness.
