I am pleased to take on the responsibility of being chair of the RTSA SA Chapter in 2019, and on behalf of the committee extend thanks to the outgoing chair Phillip Campbell from ARTC for his tireless efforts in leading the RTSA in South Australia. We look forward in 2019 to Phillip’s continued support on the committee, and also the support of new committee member Tony Carbone from Agonis Group.

For those of you that don’t know me, I am Manager for Transport across SA and WA for KBR, encompassing their road and rail service provision, and have enjoyed working on diverse rail projects such as the delivery of the Alice Springs to Darwin rail line, the planning for the Seaford Rail Extension, the track and civil upgrade of the Belair Line, the upgrade of the tram depot at Glengowrie, design of passing loops for ARTC across SA/WA/NSW, and many bridge inspection programs.

I recently returned from a break with family in the UK, and as ever my professional interests as an engineer with a civil and structures background were not far from my mind. Whilst in Edinburgh for New Year, I took the opportunity to visit the three Firth of Forth bridge crossings, sparked by a presentation given at Engineers Australia late last year. The Forth Rail Bridge which opened in March 1890 continues to serve and is still listed as the second longest cantilever bridge in the world; the new cable stayed Queensferry road crossing is a majestic addition, opening in August 2017 to replace the Forth Road suspension bridge. Not far from my folks north of London is the Warner Brother’s Studios at Leavesden and the site of the making of Harry Potter. Standing at Platform 9¾ was GWR 4900 Class 5972 Olton Hall Locomotive and Tender used for the exterior shots of the Hogwarts Express in the films, and yours truly.

I intend to continue to assist the committee in drawing upon the resources of our industry to ensure that an interesting program of events is maintained for members enjoyment. Our program this year will kick off with a site visit to the Oaklands Grade Separation project being undertaken by the Public Transport Program Alliance (PTPA). Refer to the details in the column on the right. I encourage you all to attend and to encourage your colleagues to join in and actively participate in your technical profession and to network with like-minded professionals.

Presentation – Future Mobility Transport in South Australia

Future transport mobility is the bundle of transport, technology and mobility changes that is reshaping the way people and goods move in cities and regions. A new era of automotive technology is already disrupting and transforming transport mobility. These technologies have the potential to increase safety, provide multi-model options and increase transport network efficiencies and accessibility.

In 2016 the South Australian Government launched a $10 million Future Mobility Lab Fund to support projects that demonstrate, develop or contribute to the research and deployment of future mobility technologies.

The presentation will explore future mobility technologies with a focus on the autonomous vehicle trials being conducted in South Australia as well as provide real world examples on how rail safety and redundancy systems could inform the interaction of railway crossings and autonomous vehicles. The presentation will also provide an overview of current trends and examples of automated rail solutions and the utilisation of innovative technologies increase safety.

Jeremy Conway – General Manager, Commercial and Legal

Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure

Jeremy is currently the General Manager, Commercial and Legal in the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure where he is responsible for building the commercial capability within the department and managing the provision of legal and legislative services. This includes providing market oriented advice on policy and proposals, identifying and achieving new revenue opportunities across the portfolio as well as leading legislative reforms.

Jeremy oversees a number of strategic projects including the Future Mobility Lab Fund. He is Chair of the Department’s Connected and Autonomous Vehicles Steering Committee and also represents the Department on a number of national committees, including the Australian Driverless Vehicle Initiative Executive Steering Committee, Austroads Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Program Industry Reference Group, Austroads Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Steering Committee and the Departmental representative for ITS Australia.

Jeremy is also responsible for co-ordinating the Department’s involvement with the Transport and Infrastructure Council (TIC), the forum that brings together Commonwealth, State, Territory and New Zealand Ministers with responsibility for Transport and Infrastructure issues.

Prior to this Jeremy worked in the Department for the Premier and Cabinet where he led the provision and delivery of major strategic commercial and legal services to facilitate the development and implementation of

government projects.

Jeremy’s vast commercial and business experience comes from having worked in property development at Places Victoria for 3 years and in private equity CVC Capital Partners in London for 9 years.
