Reading Workbook Week beginning 18th May 2020

How to use this workbook

Due to the nature of EYFS reading AND writing will go hand in hand when looking at our text, the reason for

this is that, at this stage, we focus on the skill of writing within our phonic sessions, which focus around being

able to put letters together to make a work like a puzzle and also how to form those letters. This booklet will

look at language through reading which we will then in turn have a go at writing.

The booklet will be set out with a number of engaging, fun but most of all purposeful activities based around

the text you are reading. I suggest reading the story each time you go back to this booklet.

• Read Together- Here you child can have ago at reading- these texts are not home reading books and as such I don’t expect them to be able to read it all independently- you could read it first and they could then read with you!

• Talk Time – Where you talk about what you have read with well structured questions to make the learning go a little deeper.

• Miss Austins favourite Words- some words to explore in a little more detail

• Let’s Pretend- role play- you might be asked to show an expression the character might do or how they might talk or even walk!

• Ready, Steady, Write – Sequencing the story, writing words, finishing off sentences, drawing pictures of the story and more.

• Out and About- Taking you character on a walk, using descriptive language of the environment

• Let’s Get Creative – creating your own story! • As always- Writing in red is more of a challenge Blue parent notes

Rumpelstiltskin

Why this book?

This term we will be looking at various traditional tales so that we can get better at understanding ‘archaic texts’. A traditional tale is a story that has been told and re-told for many years, and consequently, becomes

a story that almost everyone knows. Traditional tales are also referred to as fairy stories or fairy tales

These also support our understanding of archaic texts’. Archaic means old or old-fashioned (over 50 years old – or older).

We need to learn about archaic texts- specifically traditional tales so that we can also retell them too, just like

they did in history. It also starts to give us an insight in to how language changes. As the children move through

the school they will be able to compare the same traditional and see how it varies depending on the story

teller.

Rumpelstiltskin

This version is written by Joanna Nadin and Alejandro O’Keeffe

You can also listen to it being read by Miss Austin

Session 1 – Talking about the story

The story of The Frog Prince is so old that no one know when it was first made up. It is traditional tale- this means that long long ago someone told the story who told

someone else and eventually someone wrote it down. The one you read to day was by Abigale Flint.

Characters in the story-

Who were they?

What do they look like?

What were they wearing… why were they wearing that?

Do you like the characters? Are there any you don’t like? Why?

Was Rumpelstiltskin kind?

How did the princess feel at the end?

Why did the Prince and the Princess live hapily ever after?

What did the king want? Can you think of a word to describe the king?

Objects/animals in the story-

What objects were there?

Have you seen one before? (they may not have seen a spinning wheel before- have a look at some on google images)

What do they do?

Do you like them?

What colour are they? Are they always that colour?

What were they used for? Were any magical? How?

What words could use to describe them?

• Do you think you could tell this story to someone else so they could carry the story on?

Have a go-

Once upon a time_____________________________

Session 2- Looking at the words.

Read the story again- Maybe your child could join in this time?

Have a look a bit deeper at these words. Say each word together and match it to the picture (you can do this by simply pointing)

Greedy

Golden

Treasure (to the goblin)

Stamped

Jealous

How did you get on?

How did you know how to match the pictures as I didn’t use the character or object names?

Can you use some describing words of your own to describe the Princess and Rumpelstiltskin? What other characters could you describe? Write them

down- here is a stem sentence (and an idea of a word)

The King was ________________(Greedy)______________________________

Session 3. Let’s be the characters- You can dress up if you like! Can you pretend to be some of the characters in the story? Listen while a little bit of the story is read to you. What would the character be doing? What might they say? What would their face look like?

Listen to this and pretend to be the Miller- Would he be happy, sad excited something else? The miller was a show off who liked to tell tales….. ‘She can spin straw in to pure gold,’ he said.

Listen to this and pretend to be the goblin- Would he be happy, sad excited something else? But, of course, Lily had no idea what to do, and stamped her foot crossly. At this sound, a goblin

appeared.

‘Give me your necklace and I will spin the straw into gold,’ he said.

Listen to this and pretend to be the King- Would he be happy, sad excited something else? ‘Spin it in to gold by morning and you may marry my son’

Listen to this and pretend to be the Goblin- Would he be happy, sad excited something else? ‘I will give you three days,’ said the Goblin. ‘ But you will not win. The child will be mine’

Listen to this and pretend to be the Goblin (again!) Would he be happy, sad excited something else? He sang

‘My name’s not John,

My names not Jim,

My name is Rumpelstiltskin.’

Session 4

Sequence the story- Each picture has a picture in letter in the corner-

Write down on a paper the letter from the first picture which you think is the start of the

story…it might even have a secret message from Miss Austin if they are in the right order!

the right order.

Session 5- Draw the story Write sections from the story.

Can you draw pictures of the story on it? I did a few for you.
