The groups aim to raise awareness about the lives of those who fought, to support organizations that help wounded veterans and the families of those killed, and to aid the healing process for those Americans whose lives have been affected by the war. Honor and Remember and Run for the Fallen refuse any political affiliation or agenda, but simply honor and remember those who have fought, and those who have fallen under the American flag. (Source: www.runforthefallen.org) WHY AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY MEMBERS’ INVOLVEMENT? H The ALA’s mission is to serve and honor veterans, military, and their families; members made that promise when we signed up for membership. Run for the Fallen events embody honor and remembrance — ALA members help ensure Americans never take for granted our freedoms and the ultimate sacrifice made by our fallen heroes. Include ALA Junior members in all of your volunteer activities. The solemnity of each Run for the Fall event provides our youngest members with a glimpse into why the American Legion Auxiliary must always foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism and preserve the memories and incidents of our associations during the Great Wars. H Increase ALA awareness with your red, white, and blue: Wear ALA-branded clothing and bring patriotic gear so everyone knows who we are, what we do, and why we matter — you may appear in a PBS media segment or social network post. Ask participating Legionnaires and Sons of The American Legion to wear their uniform caps for added community visibility. Be sure to send photos to ALA National Headquarters at [email protected] after volunteering at a Run for the Fallen event so we can see how you built American Legion Family brand loyalty. Run for the Fallen events are some of the most comprehensive tributes ever for fallen military servicemembers. The run spans the United States from West to East with stops nationwide. Volunteers are needed with the remembrance ceremonies at each mile stop and evening ceremonies. Nearly 20,000 individual servicemembers who have died since the USS Cole will be recognized along the route. Cities along the Run for the Fallen route needing an ALA presence: Omaha, NE; Indianapolis, IN; and Virginia Beach, VA. The intent is to create a 6,000-mile tribute trail that culminates at Arlington National Cemetery.
