Welcome to the firstRunLiverpool Marathon.

At the beginning of the year, Sunday 9th October seemed a long way off

and now it is nearly upon us - Marathon Day is almost here!

The Marathon team has had a busy nine months planning, designing

and creating what we hope will be a great event for both spectators and

runners alike.

Liverpool and the Liverpool City Region has changed beyond recognition

in recent years and as one of the U.K.’s most dynamic tourist

destinations now serves as a stunning backdrop to what promises to be

one of the nation’s favourite marathon events. The magical 26.2 mile

distance of the RunLiverpool Marathon is lined with iconic buildings,

stunning parkland and shows off the maritime heritage and modern

architectural elegance of the city and Wirral coastline. Taking in the

original Mersey Tunnel and finishing on a World Heritage Site takes some

beating – wherever you may have run.

Mixed in along the way is a strong Beatles theme (we couldn’t leave

them out!) and we also have a Fab Four Mile Fun Run the day before the

main event. Just recently the Event Team really have been working eight

days a week to make sure that we have everything right for 9th October.

Even the date has special significance for the city as by some strange

twist of calendar fate it would have been the 71st birthday of John

Lennon – so it seems appropriate that on that note we wish

everyone good luck as they take part in THE Long And Winding

Road Race!

Best wishes

Your Running Number.IMPORTANT!! You must not under any circumstances giveyour number to anyone else.

Anyone found to be using someone else’s number will beejected from the event at any stage of the race.

Your running number is valuable as it has your timing chipfastened to the back. Your split times will be noted at 10K,halfway and 20 miles

The RunLiverpool Marathon is using the BTag system whichis disposable and does not need to be returned at the end.It is an integral part of your number and MUST NOT BEREMOVED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Without your number you will not be allocated a finishingtime and it cannot be replaced if lost.

Your number also has space for very important personalinformation. Please fill in the details, especially if you have amedical condition (however minor) as it will greatly assistthe Medical Teams should you require medical attention.

The details will also identify the individual we would need tocontact on your behalf in the event of an emergency.

The colour of your running number identifies youranticipated finishing time and you should enter the start penthat corresponds with your colour. You will not be allowedin a pen of a different colour.

Baggage VehiclesThe baggage vehicles will be located at the end of the startpens in a numerical sequence. Please take your kit bag(see page 4 for collection details) to the appropriate vehicleand allow yourself ample time to access your start pen.

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN YOUR KITBAG AS RUNLIVERPOOL MARATHON CANNOT BEHELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LOSS OR DAMAGE TOYOUR PROPERTY INCURRED ON THE DAY.

Also make sure your bag is SECURELY TIED so yourbelongings don’t fall out. Additional or unmarked bagscannot be accepted.

The Start – 9.30amYou will need to be in your starting pen in plenty of time.

Please take in the atmosphere and the sense of anticipationfrom all around you as, guess what? They are all just asnervous as you are. Swap endurance stories as you waitand give each other confidence as the minutes tick by. Trynot to look at your watch too often as it might seem time isdragging.

If you have any nervous energy then a good warm up onthe field before taking up your start position is alwaysrecommended.

The first entertainment of the day will be provided by Wirraldance troupe ANAMAL who will lead the warm-up justbefore the start.

At 9.30am sharp the gun will signal the start as the eventanthem “ALTOGETHER NOW” strikes up. Belt out a fewlines as you cross the line and get on your way because, now, you’re here and taking part in THE LONG ANDWINDING ROAD RACE! Take it easy as you begin your26.2 mile journey and hopefully all the training of the lastthree months is about to pay off.

Between 7 and 9 Miles! As you will now be getting into your stride with the first sixmiles under your belt, please prepare yourself for the verybest view of Liverpool as you follow the coast road aroundon to the promenade at New Brighton. If the weather is kindto us all on the day, then this is truly a spectacular sight thatwill have you captivated until you reach the Mersey FerryTerminal at about 9 miles.

Commit the view to your memory bank and take it homewith you, it’s a marvellous sight!

Food and Drink. As the big day nears it is important to get your food and drinkintake right so that your body has the right level of glycogento get you through the 26 miles.

In order to do this you will be increasing the amount ofcarbohydrate you consume and decrease the amount ofprotein. Carbohydrates are best in pasta, rice, bread andpotatoes.

An increase in the amount of water you consume would alsobe beneficial. If you have not been drinking whilst runningthen it would be advisable to practice before marathon day.

It is important not to try anything new or different justbefore 9th October and just keep to the regime thathopefully will have served you well throughout yourtraining programme.

Spectator Advice.Spectators are an integral part of the day and it is they thatcreate the atmosphere that is special to marathon events.

The following information will be of use to everyone watchingon the day –● Please do not stand on the road or course as this may

impede runners.● Please try NOT to cross the course whilst the race is in

progress. At key points where spectators will congregatein large numbers there will be clearly marked designatedcrossing points.

● Please do not cycle or run alongside runners as you mayunintentionally impede others.

● Please respect the efforts of the runners and encourageeveryone taking part.

Event Stewards will be positioned along the entire route andshould be able to assist with any enquiries.

Spectator Tips.Plan your day in advance and be aware of road closure timesand the possibility that you may not be able to get to whereyou plan to be because of this.

There will be many thousands of spectators and runners at thestart and finish so please spend some time to look at thelayout and access points at these key areas.

It will not be possible to meet on or around the finish line andthe repatriation area at the finish will be alongside the CrownePlaza Hotel just by the baggage vehicles, see finish area plan.

As much as it will be a long day for the runners, it will also beone for you. Ensure that you have comfortable clothing andthat you are aware of the transport arrangements to get you tothe start and back to the finish – or your chosen viewing points– in plenty of time.

Finally, please keep Wirral and Liverpool tidy anddispose of your litter properly.

Race Tips.Positive Mental Attitude! If this is your first marathon then you will have read and heardlots of things about the day. The most important thing for youto do is retain a Positive Mental Attitude from start to finish. Atsome stage of the race it will get harder and you will need tobe strong mentally. Stay positive and visualise yourselfcrossing the finish line. It does work!

Encouragement. If you want to get a good reaction from the crowds then putyour name on your running vest or top – but beware!! It isimportant that you react to the encouragement when youneed to, especially in the later stages of the marathon.During the early miles you will need to keep to a steadypace and not go off too fast.

Start Steady – find your marathon pace.Once you are on the start line the biggest mistake you canmake is to go off too fast. If you have a target finishing timethen you will have an average ’minutes per mile’ figure inmind. For example, if you are looking to run 8 minute milesthen make sure you don’t exceed that pace in the earlymiles.

Your performance will be remembered for what you do inthe last half of the race and this will be shaped by what youdo in the first half! Keep it steady.

Stay hydrated but don’t drink too much.It is important that you stay hydrated on race day but it is alsopossible to drink too much on your way around the 26 milescourse. Before race day you should practice drinking on therun and get right the amount you consume. Drinking a littleoften is the key although this may be affected by weatherconditions. In October it is normally comfortable and extremeweather conditions are unlikely. It is recommended that youavoid alcohol the night before!

Break down the course.Everyone acknowledges that 26.2 miles is a long way and ifit is your first marathon then it is also a venture into theunknown for you. As part of your Positive Mental Attitudeapproach to the day try and break the distance down intomanageable parts. Create a beginning, a middle and anend section and liken the shorter distances to where youare familiar with. As you mentally move through the sectionsyou have created in your mind you will be surprised howquickly the miles pass by. Try not to think about how far youhave to go but focus on how far you have gone.

I THIS CITY. HumanKinetics.com/run

If you want to run against me, it’s the only thing standing between

you and humiliation. I’ve been running these streets for years. I’ve

seen them laid down and torn up. Every road, every pave-

call this muscle memory. All I know is, I could beat you

with my eyes closed. I run this city. You run on home.

Medical Advice.

Are you fit to take part on race day?The first question you have to ask yourself is… “am I fitenough to take on this task?” Only you will know howyour training has gone and you will instinctively knowwhether you are fit enough. Running a marathon isphysically very demanding and you will have to be at peakfitness to take on this ultimate challenge.

It is especially important if you have any underlying medicalconditions such as asthma or diabetes. It is essential thatyou consult with your doctor if you have any doubts aboutyour ability to complete the marathon.

On the big day it is also important that you complete theMedical Condition & Emergency Contact panel on the backof your running number. This will greatly assist us in dealingwith any medical matters that may arise.

If you do have a medical problem, even something assimple as a cold, then it is important that you assess yourown ability to finish the marathon even up to the day before.

No matter how hard you have trained for marathon day it isessential that if for any reason you are in doubt aboutcompleting the distance then you make a rational ratherthan an emotional decision about taking part. There isalways another marathon to do!

So you are taking part. With that decision made then you need to be in tip topcondition and make sure you eat, drink and rest properlyduring the last two weeks before the race. There is a lot ofinformation available about diet, nutrition and training but insummary the key thing is to listen to your body. If you dothat then you will do well!

Post race food intake.Once you have completed the marathon it is important thatyou consume some food relatively quickly. This will helpreplenish your depleted energy reserves and accelerate therecovery process.

There are many cafes, restaurants and bars within closeproximity to the finish line to choose from.
