A very warm welcome to everyone joining us in making a little bit of running history, by taking part in the inaugural Asda Foundation Leicester 10K.

This event presents a great opportunity to run through the streets of this vibrant city and support the work of some excellent charities.

It forms part of the popular Asda Foundation 10K Series, which now includes 10 runs, all renowned for their sense of fun, friendliness and fantastic atmosphere.

They are organised by Run For All and form part of the legacy of the late Jane Tomlinson who, despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer, completed a series of

gruelling endurance challenges to raise £1.85m for charity.

Many thanks go to the army of volunteers at the drinks stations, out on the course and in the baggage drop-off and pick-up areas who will be working hard to help ensure you have a safe and enjoyable event.

Whatever your goal – a personal best, a fundraising target or simply to get round – get out there and smash it!

IMPORTANT RACE INFO

Please do not swap or pass on your race number – we will not know who to contact in an emergency if you do. Any runners doing so will be disqualified.

Make sure you write your name, emergency contact details and any medical information – including medication you may be taking – on the back of the number. If you have any conditions we need to be aware of, please mark a red cross clearly on the front top right-hand corner of your race number.

Before you drop your kit off at the baggage store, please tear off the baggage label from your race number and fix it securely to your bag. Please note that baggage is left at your own risk and the organisers shall not be held liable for loss or damage.

If you have any questions, please check our FAQs

Your Race Number

• Don’t worry if your race pack seems a little light. Your race number already has your timing chip attached to it, and there is a tear-off baggage strip at the bottom.

• Please make sure it is worn as issued, fixed to the front of your t-shirt or running vest and clearly visible. You will need your number to use the baggage store and to gain access to the assembly zones.

WHAT SHOULD I L K OUT FOR?

1. Leicester AbbeyThe ruins of the 12th century abbey can be seen in Abbey Park, where the 10K starts and finishes. Leicester’s premier park, other attractions include a boating lake, miniature railway and a pets corner.

2. Grand Union Canal The M1 of its day. Stretching for 137 miles, the canal is the result of the amalgamation of a number of waterways, the oldest being the navigations around the River Soar in Leicestershire.

3. King Richard III Visitor Centre Converted from a former school close to where the remains of the last Plantagenet ruler were found, the centre tells the story of his life and death and of the remarkable search for his final resting place.

4. Leicester Cathedral The cathedral houses King Richard III’s tomb, which was designed by architects van Heningen and Haward. The stone chosen for the tomb was quarried in North Yorkshire.

WHAT WE ASK OF YOU PLEASE LISTEN TO THE INSTRUCTIONS OF RACE MARSHALS AND POLICE ON ROUTE. Most of the route will be traffic-free, although vehicles may at times be using the same road and separated from runners by cones.

IF YOU NEED TO WALK AT ANY POINT, IT’S NOT A PROBLEM. However, please be considerate to other runners and move to the side of the route, and avoid walking in large groups that may be difficult to overtake. If you need to drop out, please try to make your way to one of the clearly marked retiree points or a first aid point on route and give your race number to a race marshal. If you need to get to the finish area, we’ll arrange transport for you as soon as possible.

NUTRITION1. Maintain a normal high carbohydrate

training diet in the week up to the race. Whatever your breakfast choice on the morning of the event, try it ahead of your long training runs. You’ll need food that settles well and fuels you.

2. Practice drinking on training runs – hydration is a fine balance. Don’t start the event dehydrated, but ensure you drink through the event according to your thirst. You may not need to drink at every drinks station.

TRAINING1. As race day approaches, make sure

you have trained in the kit you intend to wear so you know it doesn’t chafe or give you blisters. Race day is not the time to break in new shoes!

2. Visualise race day in training: see yourself running a strong race and one where you achieve your personal targets. Being mentally fit will allow your body to perform.

TOP TIPS

Be organised and equipped: Check the weather forecast, and ensure you have the right kit in your bag. Leave plenty of time to get to the start, so you can stay relaxed, calm and focused.

Find your motivation: Whatever your reason or reasons for running, remind yourself of them regularly and never lose sight of what crossing that finish line means to you.
