R/V SPERRY STAR III

R/V Sperry Star III is a 46-ton, 63-ft research vessel owned and operated by Northrop Grumman as a platform for research and development, product testing and operation training. The vessel was built in 1986 by the Hatteras Yacht Company in New Bern, North Carolina. It is under the operational control of the Northrop Grumman Maritime Systems Engineering Department, and serves as a floating laboratory for product and software development, systems integration and critical sea trials for navigation systems and equipment. The Maritime Systems engineering policies require that sea trials must be conducted prior to release of any new product, to ensure it meets the performance criteria under a realistic operational environment. The Sperry Star III is fitted with a full array of Northrop Grumman navigation systems, including radars, autopilot, gyrocompasses and two separate Voyage Management Systems (VMS) with an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS). Additional items of equipment are installed as needed for specific tests and sea trials.

The Sperry Star has a fully equipped 6-person conference room for presentation and briefing needs. Additionally, the vessel’s salon area features a 50” flat screen display for product demonstration and computer- based presentations.
