From The Manager

Hope everyone had a wonderful Independence Day. I am learning that summer around the Club can be quite exciting. If you were here on July 7th, you might recall the incredible storm that blew through the property with high winds and rain. Of course all that excitement created a mess on the golf course as well as our Terrace. Craig Hilty and his team did a great job cleaning up the courses and we had an “all hands on deck” effort to clean up the Terrace. Unfortunately, we lost several glass tables and umbrellas. However, we won’t let that hamper our summer fun and we’ll have some new furniture out there soon. July was an incredible month with two very successful events, our Men’s Member/Guest and the Ladies Invitational. Please take a moment to congratulate our staff on the great job they did. Craig Hilty, our Grounds Superintendent, and his staff for the condition of the golf course. Tracy Snyder, Head Golf Professional, and his staff took care of all the details for running the tournaments as well as scoring and awards. And don’t forget about our food and beverage team keeping the players well

hydrated and fed. We also had a wonderful team of volunteers who spent much time making sure these events ran smoothly and were great fun for all the players. As you are already aware, we have several key management positions currently open at the Club. We are continuing our pursuit of a new Executive Chef and Membership & Marketing Director which has kept us busy. There have been other communi-cations which you should have received in regards to our continued search for excellent staff. Coming up the end of August is our annual Southern Oregon Golf Championships. The staff has been busy preparing for this great event. Since this will be my first time, I am looking forward to all the excitement. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our Club. If you are available during this week, we are looking for volunteers. Please contact the Club to sign up.

Book Club - August 4The Book Club will meet on Tuesday, August 4 at 4pm to discuss Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. (Helen McCrae presiding.) Before Louisa met Will, her plans didn’t reach beyond their tiny English town. Will, when he wasn’t closing multimillion-dollar deals, blew off steam scaling mountains, leaping from planes, and enjoying exquisite women--until an accident left him para-lyzed and seriously depressed. When his mother

hires Lou to keep his spirits up, he meets her awkward overtures with caustic contempt, but she’s tenacious and oddly endearing. Their fondness grows into something deeper, gaining urgency when she realizes his determination to end his life, and her efforts to convince him of its value throw her own bland ambitions into question. Plumbing morally complex depths with comedy and compassion, Jojo Moyes elevates the story of Lou and Will from what could have been a maudlin weepie into a tragic love story, with a catharsis that will wring out your heart and leave you feeling fearless. The September book will be In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette by Hampton Sides. In the Kingdom of Ice is a brilliant explo-sion of narrative non-fiction: detailed, moving, harrowing, as gripping as any well-paced thriller but a lot more interesting because it is also true.Email Nancy Kline at [email protected] or call 541-779-2674 if you are interested in learning more.Knitting/Craft Club - August 4Are you are interested in knitting or crafts of all kinds? Join these gals on Tuesday, August 4 in the Ladies’ Card Room to socialize while you work on a craft of your choosing. We have ladies who can help with knitting, quilting and cross stitching. E-mail Kathy Jones at [email protected] if you are interested in joining the group. Bridge ClubDo you love to play Bridge and want to meet more RVCC members? We are a group of all levels, men and women, meeting Wednesday evenings on a monthly basis. If you know how to play, but are still honing your skills and would like to play a fun and relaxed game, this is the group for you! Hole in OneOn June 11 Kathy Posen was playing with Deanna Wilson, Tammie Allen and Diane Plotts when she aced hole #11.

Kathy, who was in the pot, used a 9 wood to execute the perfect shot. Way to go Kathy, great shot! On the last day of June Bob Cox, Marshall Holman and John Quinones all witnessed Max Davis hole out from the tee on #4 with an 8 iron. Max was not in the pot, however his Dad was very nice to all his playing partners. Well done, Max!

Southern Oregon Golf ChampionshipsThe 86th annual Southern Oregon is coming up with prac-tice rounds starting on August 31, Qualifying on September 1 and 2. Match play will start on September 3 and end with the finals on September 7. The Super Senior division is full with a waiting list. All other divisions are filling quickly. Entry blanks are available in the Golf Shop, online and in the Club-house at the reception desk. This continues to be one of the best tournaments around so don’t miss out.

Club ChampionshipThe sign-up sheet is up in the Golf Shop for the annual Club Championship. This event will be held from August 14 – 16. The format is 54 holes of stroke play over three days with gross and net prizes. This year we have four Divisions: Men’s, Senior Men’s (55+), Super Senior Men’s (65+) & Ladies. Prizes will be awarded to overall winners in each division and flight winners within each division. This tournament is the highlight of the year for the club. Your entry fee of $75 per player or $125 per couple includes three rounds of golf, Friday night party, team auction, trophies and gift certificates. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the club, the course and your fellow members. Sign up in the Golf Shop today.

Junior Club ChampionshipOur juniors will be having their own Club Championship on August 10 and 11. All juniors under the age of 18 are encour-aged to play. There will be divisions for 3 holers, 5 holers, 9 holers, and 18 holers, both boys and girls. Sign up now in the Golf Shop. Tee times will be in the afternoon both days with a hosted dinner and awards on Tuesday evening when play is completed. Get your kids and grandkids out to play.

Oaks Course Turn TimesThis time of year the club is a very popular place. We have many different functions, tournaments, men’s and ladies nights, etc. This results in more play on our Oaks Course. With the Oaks only being nine holes, there are many groups who like to play it twice. To do this you must make a second tee time two hours after your first tee time. Without a second time you may run into other people teeing off and you will have to wait until there is another opening. By making the turn time, you will be able to move right along for your second nine holes. This makes it much easier for all.

Rules of GolfRule 28 - Ball UnplayableThe player may deem his ball unplayable at any place on the course, except when the ball is in a water hazard. The player is the sole judge as to whether his ball is unplayable. If the player deems his ball to be unplayable, he must, under penalty of one stroke: a. Proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or b. Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or c. Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole. If the unplayable ball is in a bunker, the player may pro-ceed under Clause a, b or c. If he elects to proceed under Clause b or c, a ball must be dropped in the bunker. When proceeding under this Rule, the player may lift and clean his ball or substitute a ball. Penalty for Breach of Rule: Match play - Loss of hole; Stroke play - Two stroke

Mistakes! If we could only just eliminate them from our games...oh, what scores we could shoot. But wait, we’re not tour professionals and the last time I looked, most of us are basically human. Therefore, mistakes are one of the things we do best. For clarification, I don’t necessarily consider a bad shot a mistake. We are, as mentioned, not machines, so hitting bad shots is part of the game. The idea there is to mini-mize the damage caused by the occasional bad shot. No, the mistakes I’m talking about are usually of the mental variety. Poor planning, insufficient pre-shot preparation...you get the idea. So, I now offer up for your perusal, my top five amateur mistakes made in any given round by the everyday golfer. Not that pros can’t make the same mistakes, they do. They just typically make them less often and with less severe consequences.

1). Using too lofted a club around the greens. This is espe-cially rampant amongst our high schoolers...they just love to flop the ball up in the air too high or try to apply way too much spin to the shots. Remember, when it comes to a putting surface, roll is more predictable than flight. This being said with all due respect to Mr. Mickelson.

2). Falling in love with the driver on every hole. You’d be surprised how little difference between the distance a driver and a three or four wood. The unfortunate by-product of using the driver is that most of us put “just a little more” into the shot which makes for off center hits, LESS distance, and trees in our way on the next shot. Put the ball in “play” as master teacher, John Jacobs would say.

3). One of my favorite quotes from one of our members: “Never hit two putts in a row in the same direction.” Think about that one for a second. The basic premise, if the ball

doesn’t get to, or past, the hole, it can’t go in! I estimate that if I would have hit all my putts the correct speed in my life, I would have made 25% more putts. Aaargh! The putt needs to go approximately 17” past the hole to hold its line. Plus, as it goes past, you can get the read on the putt coming back.

4). Trying to be too much of a hero when you are in trouble. Like trying to squeeze out an extra 5 yards by going through too tight an opening in the trees. Clank, clank...oops, I’m further into the junk. Added insult to injury. Take your lumps and get back to safe ground. This is why you work so hard on your wedge play. Rely on it when you are in these situations. As a good friend says: “It’s a scorecard, not a postcard.”

5). And finally, the most often violated “smart golf” premise: not hitting sufficient club. Wow! Do I see this one a ton! This is something, that if you watch the big kids on TV, that you just will not see...well, hardly ever. They check their egos at the door and use enough club so as to not have to swing with both cheeks and hope they hit their greatest 5 iron ever. When you choose your club for a particular shot, be realistic and do ALL the math...uphill, blue pin, wet conditions, heavy air...

That’s it. Hope this helps as you prepare to do YOUR best.

Grounds ReportBy Craig Hilty

Well, that was one hot June we just endured! June 2015 broke many records(data from National Weather Service, Medford Airport) including six

daily high temperature records, five days over 100 degrees, and 21 days over 90 degrees. Couple the June heat and our mandatory 30% reduction in irrigation water usage; I am thrilled with how well the course looks. July has started out extremely hot as well. Looking at the long range forecast, there appears to be some temporary relief from the heat, but a higher chance of thunderstorms each day. We are on high alert for golfer and staff safety and crossing our fingers that no new fires are started as it is very dry in our foothills. The 86th Southern Oregon Golf Championship is just around the corner. This is always a great event for our Club to host. The golf, parties, putting and chipping contest, camaraderie and did I mention GOLF are always top shelf!! The eight day event takes a lot of preparation and flawless execution to host such a successful Championship. One of the biggest components associated with the success of the Championship is the MANY hours that members volunteer their time. If you have volunteered for this event, you know just how rewarding it can be. If you have not volunteered in the past, I would encourage you to consider volunteering this year, and get in touch with the Pro Shop to help this event thrive! It is a great way to give back to your Club! The first annual Father’s Day Fishing Derby was held on June 21 at the Oaks #3 Pond. This event turned out to be one of the most special Club events I have been associ-ated with. Forty dads, grandfathers, and kids lined the pond at 7:00am and began what turned out to be a phenomenal day of fishing. Over 60 bass, crappie and even one cat-fish (which won the ugliest fish trophy) were caught and released. I would like to personally thank all of those who came out that morning, and please put this event on your calendar for next year! I have noticed that quite a few cups on the greens are getting damaged during daily play on the golf course. A big reason for this is that I have watched and heard that golfers are using their putters to pull the ball out of the cup. When a putter is used it can damage the cup edge and also raise the turf around the cup leading to a dome shape around the hole. For all of the golfers who play behind you, please do not use your putter to pull the ball out of the cup. Also, please continue to fill or replace your divots, rake the bunkers behind you, and last but not least, enjoy your round!

Respectfully,Craig Hilty

Know your Farmer, Know your Food! The Rogue Flavor guide helps you connect with some of the best agricultural and artisan foods in the world. The guide highlights what makes the Rogue Valley unique: the farms and food businesses that create the distinctive local flavor of our community.

Use our annual Rogue Flavor guide to find:• Special food and farming events Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs • Farmers markets• Neighborhood markets • Unique restaurants• Artisan foods • Wine, beer and spiritsVote with your food dollar!Purchasing locally preserves the unique character of our region, ensures the future of our small farmers and business owners and conserves energy by shortening the distance from the farm to your plate. You can put more money in the local economy by buying fresh local food that’s good for you, good for farmers and good for the local economy.Learn more about local food!About Rogue FlavorThe Rogue Flavor campaign encourages your support and appreciation of our local farmers, winemakers and artisan producers of specialty foods. Our locally owned farms and food businesses create the distinctive flavor of our com-munity – whether it’s world-class cheeses or your favorite local restaurant. The Rogue Flavor label means that the product was grown or produced by a locally owned independent busi-ness in the Rogue River watershed. Fresh fruits, vegetables and animal products were raised here. Specialty food items are produced here, but may contain ingredients that were not grown in the Rogue Valley. Local food carries a wealth of benefits. It’s fresh and tastes great. It keeps money in your region by putting dollars in farmers’ pockets. It fosters strong communities and has the potential to improve the landscape and natural environment. You can help ensure continued access to local food that is good for you, good for farmers, good for the local 11240economy and good for the earth. Here’s how:Look for the Label:At your local grocery and favorite restaurant, the Rogue Flavor emblem will identify foods produced locally. Please look for

it and ask for it. Look for the The Rogue Flavor guidebook at local food purveyors. It will guide you to wonderful foods, wines and flavors throughout the the Rogue Valley.

Use your voice:Tell restaurants and retail stores that you found them in the Rogue Flavor guide and that it’s important to you as a customer that they buy from family farmers. The more that customers request local food and thank businesses for buy-ing local, the more stores and restaurants will buy local food.

Join Thrive’s efforts to rebuild our Rogue Valley food economy:Thrive is working with local farmers and ranchers to expand our capacity to grow and process food locally.

7 STEPS TO A PERFECT SERVEWhen it comes to a well-rounded serve, we often overlook the little errors that keep us from winning more matches. Sometimes it helps to take a step back and re-evaluate what you think you know. Are there aspects you’re taking for granted that are actually holes in your technique? Here are seven questions to ask yourself -- you might be surprised at how much room for improvement you actually have.

1. How reliable is my first serve?A big first serve that rarely goes in is not much of a weapon. To make your first serve more accurate divide the service square into three equal sized areas from the service line to the net. Now serve wide to the forehand side, then the middle, then serve down the center line. Serve success-fully into each area before going on to the next. Initially give yourself two serves per area and then only one serve. Once you can complete a series of two consecutive successes to each area, you have reached your goal.

2. How much pace do I generate? If your serve lands in the service court, but the ball does not carry to the back fence, you need to increase your racket head speed. One trick is to bounce the ball hard into the ground with your racket and see how high it ricochets

into the air. Pronate your forearm as fast as you can, and if the ball stays in the air for three seconds before it hits the ground, your racket head speed is acceptable.

3. How effective is my kick serve?Test to see whether your kick serve can hit close to the singles side line on the ad side and then rebound outside of the doubles side line. If the ball does not carry that far, have your racket brush upwards and sideways past the right up-per quarter of the ball. This will give it more of a wide kick.

4. How effective is my slice serve? If your serve does not carry wide of the doubles side line on the deuce side after hitting the singles side line, you are not getting enough side spin. Hit the ball at the 3 o’clock mark and then pronate your forearm sharply through the hit. Now you should be able to move your opponent way off the court.

5. A very quick mid-game check if your serve is giving you trouble is:If your serve is going long try a little higher toss – if your serve is going into the net focus on keeping your head and shoulders up through the serve motion.

It’s another quiet morning as I step outside sipping a cup of coffee. The birds are chirping their morning song in between the sounds of a nearby jogger.

I see a woman in her 50’s trudging along as if she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. I noticed a hunched posture slowing her down as she was dragging her feet every step of the way.

This brought back memories of my debilitating jogging days.

Today, it’s different. Today I use my whole core to train and it goes something like this:

First, I start walking with thankfulness and gratitude in my heart. Then, I activate my imagination (inner core and pelvic floor) as I walk with a little more speed (outer core) and spring in my step feeling happy to be alive. I image that I am in a jungle and start to run as fast as I can. Why? Because I am being chased by a pink elephant. Yes, a pink elephant. I am dodging trees, rocks and jumping over streams. I do this for a minute or two gradually increasing the “chase” time while increasing my imagination. My guts are churning with an anxious excitement that seems to carry me effortlessly over the uneven ground (inner core activation stabilizing your spine).

Before I know it, 15 minutes are up and my dreaded jog is not so bad after all!

There IS a better way for heart, spine and internal organ health when doing a mindless activity for “exercise.” Engage your brain by activating your imagination for a whole core workout with less injury and WAY better results for: La Dolce Vita!

Until then... Walk... Breath... Be Thankful
