I felt like family from day one. By my second day here, they were calling me by name. I have a bad knee and abad back, so I haven’t been able to do any land classes. But I do the aqua classes every day, five days a week and
sometimes Saturdays. I missed a day and the lifeguard asked ‘are you o-k?’ Nobody else does that. After retiring,
I had no purpose. The aqua classes get me out of the house and give me incentive to eat right. I view this as
almost like my job.

At the Rye Y, we have big dreams.
We want children to thrive, adults to achieve their goals, communities tobecome stronger. We want to ease the effects of illness and isolation. We want to create opportunities for healthy living for all.
Our staff and board have all the “right stuff” to support these dreams: vision, energy, commitment and a work ethic that can’t be beat. However, asuccessful organization needs one more thing to be truly effective: a plan.
In April 2015, the Rye Y’s Board of Directors adopted a StrategicRoadmap that will guide our cause-driven work for the next several years. We developed this plan with input from local residents and key communityleaders. We thoughtfully considered goals and strategies, determined tobuild on achievements of the past while considering all the possibilitiesthat lie ahead. Above all, we wanted to lay the groundwork for evengreater impact—for our members and for the communities we serve.
The term “Roadmap” implies a journey, an apt word for the work we do.Throughout this Annual Report, you’ll find stories and photos that illustrate how the Rye Y supports individuals and families on their journeys. Whether that’s a child learning to swim, a cancer survivor overcoming the effects of treatment, or a senior venturing out after loss,we’re with them along the road.
Strategic Planning isn’t the most glamorous undertaking. Yet it’s one ofthe most important things an organization can do. It engages our community. It charts our course. And it gives us the framework to makedreams come true.
Sincerely,
Gregg Howells Douglas C. DeStaebler, PresidentExecutive Director Board of Directors

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Our goal is to help youth cultivate the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behavior, better health and educational success.

In 2015, 1,360 children and teens learned new skills, made friends, and grew in confidence at the Rye Y’s Summer Camp. In addition to the traditional camp experience, the Y offered one-week sessions in thefine arts, LEGO, gymnastics, and sports. Middle and high school studentstook advantage of the Teen Fitness Campor Adventure trips, while others startedtheir first jobs as Counselors in Training. And all summer long, camp staff tackledsummer learning loss through reading andSTEM (Science, Technology, Engineeringand Math) activities.
In 2015, the Rye Y became a founding member of Rye Action for Children and Teens. Rye-ACT is a broad-based, grass-roots coalition that is mobilizing our community to prevent teen substance abuse and support healthy choices. As ayouth-serving organization, we know that kids need positive reinforcement from all of the adults and institutions in theirlives. Through Rye-ACT, we’ve joined with many others to convey a simple, yet powerful message to our teens: We care.
When the Rye Y conducted a Community Needs Assessment and Community Leaders’ Focus group in late 2014/early 2015,one recommendation caught our attention: several requests for non-sports activities for youth. In response, we started a Chess Club and two Origami and Kirigami classes. These programs joined a roster that already included Lego Builders, Creative Fine Arts and The Art of Duct Tape.
Teens are getting the message: texting whilewalking or driving can lead to tragedy. As part ofthe Rye YMCA’s 4th Annual Heads Up! PosterContest, 74 Rye High School students createdposters that show the dangers of distraction. After the students selected 28 semi-finalists, ajudging panel composed of community leadersselected first, second and third place winners. Noe Abe and the team of Caroline Costa andJulia Mackey tied for first place. Heads Up! is just one component of the Rye Y’s Safe Routesto School initiative.
HEALTHY LIVING
RYE YMCA | ANNUAL REPORT 2015 | PAGE 6
In communities across the nation, the Y is a leader for health and well-being, bringing families closer together, encouraging good health and fostering connections through fitness, sports, service and shared interests.

In October, we held our Fourth AnnualLIVESTRONG at the YMCA Day. Nearly60 LIVESTRONG at the YMCA alumni andstaff gathered at Wainwright House forfitness, food and fellowship. This year’sevent once again featured interactiveworkshops that focused on holistic healing, including art therapy, yoga and Tai Chi among others. In 2015 alone, 85cancer survivors found hope and healingthrough LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.
The Rye Y teamed up with the Community ResourceCenter, Open Door Family Medical Centers and othercommunity partners to host the 2nd Annual Access toCare Fair in Mamaroneck. During this half-day event,Sound Shore residents were screened, free of charge, for everything from high blood pressure to breast cancer and left with vital information about health and wellness. More than 20 health and social serviceorganizations provided 281 screenings.
In 2015, we expanded the reach of our community health work by offering the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program at OpenDoor Family Medical Centers’ facility in Ossining. Thanks to our ongoing partnership with Open Door, four YMCA DPP Spanish-language classes were also held at Open Door’s Port Chester site. In total, we gave 43 at-risk adults the tools they need to preventthis debilitating disease.
There was poignancy to this year’s TRIBE. The all-women’s triathlon training group had lostone of their own in March when Valerie Romanellosuccumbed to cancer. So the women did what theydo best: they supported each other and trainedeven harder. In September, 47 women crossed thefinish line at the Iron Girl Triathlon in Sandy Hook,NJ. The Rye Y team included a mother-daughterpair, an aunt and her teenage niece, and a cancersurvivor making a comeback after chemotherapy. All wore pink t-shirts with the words “We are ValSTRONG.”

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
For over 100 years, the Rye Y has been a hub of community life and a catalyst for positive change. From financial assistance that keeps the Y affordable for people who need our programs most, to the partnershipsthat foster strong communities, the spirit of social responsibility infuses every aspect of our work.

Imagine a garden oasis in an urban setting, one that supplies fresh, affordable, healthy vegetables to local residents. That dream came closer to reality when the Rye Y joined Port Chester Cares, the Port Chester Housing Authority, Family Services of Westchester, the NAACP and elected officials for a groundbreaking at Weber Community Garden last September. The garden is an initiative of the Healthier Port Chester coalition, which wasfounded by the Rye Y in 2013. It will be maintained and enjoyed by residentsof the village’s housing authority.
Water safety isn’t just learned in thewater. Last June, the Rye Y’s AssistantAquatics Director visited 18 classes atOsborn Elementary School in Rye,teaching hundreds of children in gradesK-4 about staying safe in and aroundpools and other bodies of water.
Even with the press of work and family obligations, YMCA members still feelthe need to connect with their community and each other in meaningful ways.Togetherhood is a national Y initiative that involves members of all ages inprojects that benefit the communities we serve…and beyond. In 2015, theRye Y’s Togetherhood Committee organized five diverse projects, allowing 88members to volunteer for the following organizations: My Sisters’ Place, RyeNature Center, Don Bosco Community Center, Bread of Life food pantry, andThe Sharing Shelf.
Healthy living can seem out of reach for those who are facing economicstruggles. However, the Y has made a powerful promise to the communities we serve: no-one will be turned away from a Y program or activity for financial reasons. In 2015 alone, we awardedover $520,000 to individuals and families who needed a helping hand.

By the year’s end, the ExerZone had become a popular destination forafterschool play, mid-morning classes and family exercise.
On September 28, Rye Y board members, trustees, staff, elected officials and members of the construction team filled the Rye Y’s former racquetball court to celebrate the opening of ExerZone.
ExerZone!
ExerZone combines fitness with technology for a fun, fast-pacedworkout. Since its opening, membersof all ages have tested their physicaland cognitive skills at six differentstations. Each station offers a seriesof challenges, allowing each player to compete against a partner oragainst his or her own time.
“I think it is wonderful! The designof the equipment is ingenious – Ifeel like I’m playing not exercising.”
– Evelyn Stier, Rye Y Member
RYE YMCA | ANNUAL REPORT 2015 | PAGE 11
Each year, Y staff and volunteers encourage members to share their personal stories, from the back stories thatbrought them to the Y to the successes and challenges encountered on the road to healthy living. This year’s interviewees ranged from young children to seniors in their 80s.
Modeled loosely on Story Corps, a national oral history project,” The Rye Y Story Project” was launched one day after Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Since then, nearly 200 members, staff and volunteers have shared their hopes, their accomplishments and their gratitude for the support and friendships they’ve found at the Y.
Here are two of the 36 stories collected in 2015.
BRAD SASSENBERGI rejoined the Rye Y about a year ago after having heart failure in 2011, 2012 and2013. Each time I had been found, I was in an unconscious, collapsed state. Each time I was brought back to life, I realized that this must be a gift.
I started doing the Rye Y handicap swim class, since I am a disabled senior citizen. I love working out and lifting weights. The trainers at the Rye Y provide helpfultips for exercise routines. Because of this, I have gained strength. I now work out fourtimes per week for 1 ½ hours each time. All of the staff members are very friendly andhelpful. The Wellness staff members (Rebecca, Laura, Peter) have really helped me withmy routines and techniques. I am finally developing a healthy lifestyle.
The Rye YMCA has given me a new life and I hope and pray, that I can continue on this journey.
DIANE RYANI came to the Rye Y through LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. I had worked out before being diagnosed with metastatic ovarian cancer, but after I finished chemo in March and injections in April, I was so weak I couldn’t get off the couch.
My first impression of LIVESTRONG was “there are people in this group just like me.”Everyone was so nice. During the first few weeks, I could barely exercise. Then, I got much stronger. They pushed me and were such a positive influence.
As I was getting stronger, my instructor told me about the Tribe. She told me how powerful and inspiring the experience is. I was very hesitant, but it was everything she said it would be plus. When I started the Tribe, I couldn’t even get up a flight ofstairs. I wanted to quit more than you can imagine, but the whole team kept me going. On September 15, 2015, I completed the triathlon at Sandy Hook.
The Tribe was the best experience ever. Now, I’m planning to start yoga classes. My goal is to keep running, biking and swimming. I belonged to another sports club,
but it wasn’t anything like this. You come here and it’s a very close and friendly feeling.
I come here because it makes me feel good. I have 13-year-old boys, twins, and they want to exercise because they see medoing it, which is the best inspiration. I’m a stronger person now. I’m in remission, but if the cancer ever came back, I’d havemore strength to fight it.

Y CARES
The Y Cares program allows the Rye YMCA to keep a powerful promise to the communities we serve: no-one will be turned awayfrom a Y program or activity because he or she can’t pay. In 2015, we awarded over $520,000 in financial aid to 391 familiesthat needed a helping hand. Scholarships allowed children to join their peers at camp, while membership subsidies gave adults, seniors and families the full Y experience, often during difficult times. Thanks to generous support from individuals, businessesand foundations, Y Cares is meeting a critical need in our communities.
A NOTE FROM A Y CARES RECIPIENT
Dear Donors and Volunteers,
Your financial assistance has made it possible for our family to enjoy the many wonderful activities the Rye Y has to offer. Mygirls are 3 years and 1 year old and they walk into the building with a smile on their face and a sense of comfort and community.I have watched my 3-year-old blossom into a more confident child as a result of the kindness and acceptance we feel from allmembers of the Rye Y staff. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
