It’s great to be back in San Francisco! I’m

thrilled to have joined the School of

Management in the Department of

Hospitality Management at USF as its new

Administrative Director. Hospitality

Management has had a long and storied

history here at USF and I’m proud to have

been given the role of carrying that legacy

into the future.

Our continued growth will be dependent on

a number of key ingredients all working

together to move us to even greater heights.

A continued strong support from the

hospitality industry leaders here in

San Francisco and around the globe,

including our advisory board and of

course our great alums who are scat-

tered all over the world today.

A great faculty and administrative team

of knowledgeable experts in the

field with a dedication to teaching

our future industry leaders.

A supportive and enthusiastic university

and School of Management admin-

istration committed to the Depart-

ment of Hospitality Management’s

long term future.

An outstanding group of highly

motivated students dedicated to

learning how to become future

managers and leaders in the field.

The good news is we already have all of

those ingredients in place, so we are well

positioned to continue to move forward.

Our goals for the future of Hospitality

Management are ambitious. We want to

grow the number of students in our

program from around the globe in order to

best reflect the international nature of the

hospitality industry as whole. We also want

to remain current with the trends of the

industry in order to offer the most relevant

courses and address all areas of study that

will lead our graduates toward a variety of

opportunities within the field. Being

innovative and utilizing today’s technology

in our teaching methods and support of our

students, alumni and the industry is another

important focus of our future direction.

Additionally, we want to emphasize the

expertise of our team to provide consulting,

training and research for hospitality industry

companies and organizations. In short, we

want the world to know what a great

program we have here at USF and I’m sure

with all of us working together, we’ll

accomplish our goals.

85th Annual CMAA World Conference by Jessica Petersen ’12, USF CMAA Secretary

USF Hospitality Students Intern with

Ridgewells Catering at the 2012 U.S. Open by Alexsandra Johnson ’13

My four days at the U.S. Open hosted at the San Francisco Olympic Club

began with a kick of adrenaline, when on Thursday June 14, 2012, the fire

which caused BART to be shut down left Ridgewell Catering short-staffed

with nearly half of their team stranded in the East Bay. I had no idea what

kind of well-orchestrated chaos I had gotten myself into until lunch time

rolled around and 150 hungry Bank of America executives and clientele were waiting in our tent with one server and two

kitchen assistants short. Fortunately, we had an incredible head chef and a kitchen team that was able to perform even with

the heat turned up and in a temporary kitchen to boot. If there is one word to describe my experience at the U.S. Open, it

would be “invaluable”. I never thought I could learn so much about working in a team that depends on one another for

success or about the impressive task of on-site food preparation as I did in these four days. Though this work was some of

the most draining I have ever done, and I definitely do not miss 13-hour work days, if I could do it all over again, I would

in a heartbeat. Working with Ridgewells was a tremendous opportunity for me and my peers, and I look forward to seeing

Ridgewells continued success in being the gold standard in catering.

HMA students gathered at the12th annual

HMA Walk-a-Thon to raise money for

Women’s Cancer Research

The University of San Francisco Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) student chapter traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana this past February to attend the annual CMAA conference to broaden their knowledge about the private club indus-try, discover vast opportunities, and to become better managers in the hospitality business. As students, club managers acknowledge us as the future of their private clubs. Managers are eager and excited to help us excel in our individual careers, in hopes that we will find that same fiery passion within the club industry that they themselves have found. As members of the USF CMAA Student Chapter, we receive

tremendous support from numerous private clubs. This year, we were able to send 16 members to New Orleans. At the con-ference, the St. Francis Yacht Club welcomed us warmly with a wonderful breakfast. Mr. Ron Banaszak, the general manager of the StFYC, described how beneficial the conference is for students. He reminded us that it is a place for networking, find-ing mentors, and developing one’s character of leadership. Students were offered internships – from the Bohemian Club in San Francisco to the Sleepy Hollow Club in Scarborough, New York. Through student sessions, we learned the power of image, the necessity of innovation and enthusiasm, the importance of education and integrity, and how to achieve professional success.

On April 24th, 2012 the Hospitality Management Association (HMA) held its’12th Annual Walk-A-Thon for Women's Cancer Research at UCSF. Over 50 people joined us in walking over the Golden Gate Bridge, despite the unpredictable San Francisco spring showers, to help us raise more than $2,000. All of the proceeds were donated to the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and will be used to help eradicate this disease that has affected so many of our lives. HMA looks forward to next year’s Walk-A-Thon, and we hope to see you all there!

Each year the San Francisco Travel Association and the Hotel and Restaurant Founda-

tion award the John A. Marks scholarship to an outstanding student pursuing a career in the Hospitality Industry. We are

proud to announce that this year’s recipient was USF Hospitality Management Senior A-Nisha Knox. A-Nisha, at home for

the summer in Tennessee when notified of receiving the scholarship, was unable to attend SFTA’s annual luncheon held in

San Francisco in June. A-Nisha thanked her donors and when accepting the award and said, “By awarding me with this scholar-

ship you have alleviated my financial burden, which allows me to focus more on the most important aspect of school; learning. Your generosity has

inspired me to continue to work hard and succeed as a hospitality leader”. Upon graduation in May A-Nisha would like to work in Mar-

keting for a Hotel in San Francisco or London.

Networking, networking, networking…..!!

Career networking remains one of the most strategic and suc-

cessful business and sales practices and never goes out of

style! First jobs for students are often secured through par-

ents or family, who have a friend in the business, or whose

friends often have friends who have yet another friend or a

sister or brother or aunt or uncle in the industry!

USF has a LinkedIn site---and you are all encouraged to sign

up. You will need to create a profile in order to see other

USF contacts.

You may register with USF’s LinkedIn group page.

So while Social Media is a dominant player in the world of

networking, it is still the fine art of communication, the detail

of the follow-up and the follow-through, including remem-

bering to send a note of thanks, to complete the transaction.

Are handwritten notes passé? Not at all! Because they are a

dying art these days, when received, handwritten notes of

thanks are more memorable, get more notice and set you

apart from the crowd. Dare to be unique!! Follow-through

with your networking!!! Remember to say “Thank You!”.

KO’s LinkedIn profile is still a work-in-progress! You can

visit her at Kathy “KO” Odsather at LinkedIn!

Alumni Spotlight From Paris:

Jacqueline Hultner

When I think about my time in HMA or CMAA, I think

about all the great memories from the events we put togeth-

er. I think about how they introduced me to new and inter-

esting people, whom I have made relationships with which

will last forever. I think about the laughter, the fear and

adrenaline from pushing our own boundaries, the

brainstorming and the staying up late together to get it all

finished. But for some reason, it never hits me to think about

the long hours, or the fact that we did it all during our free

time and without pay.

And that is why I think that HMA and CMAA are

the greatest trainer for the future which awaits us in the hos-

pitality field. Because as I know, and most of you reading

this, hospitality is about passion and drive, and there are

times when we work long hours, and when we sacrifice social

outings for our work. But the experiences which we gain stay

with us. The experiences are filled with laughter, brainstorm-

ing, coming together in teams, and a little bit of fear (that’s

what keeps us going, isn’t it?).

As part of the opening team of Mandarin Oriental,

Paris, we worked together like an HMA committee, lots of

long hours, lots of brainstorming, some laughter, some fear,

but when we got through the opening phase, I told people

that it felt as though I had gone back to university. The

bonds that had been created were stronger than any other

working relationships I had ever experienced. And the things

I have learned about myself, about hotels, and about the

French culture have all pushed me to be a better manager.

Sometimes I miss my city by the bay, but for now, I am

enjoying myself in the city of love (and the city of amazing

food, oh my), and thinking back fondly on my time spent at

USF.

Warm regards,

Jacqueline Hultner
