From the desk of the Pastoral Associate

Mrs. Linda Muldoon

Holy Week for me is a week of emotional highs, lows, and everything in between—along with some guilt. How did Lent go so quickly? What happened to my good intentions? When our loved ones tell us about something that didn’t work out as they had hoped for, we talk to them about second (or twenty-second) chances and perhaps ask them, “How can you do it better the next time?” We are the beloved of a God who is always willing to give us another chance or the opportunity for a do-over. As we enter into this Holy Week, let us find some time to spend with the Lord—at home, at work, in church, in front of or holding a crucifix, at Mass, or during the many opportunities for prayer that this week offers. Let us pray for the wisdom to recognize the second chances and the do-over moments that God places in our lives every day.

Daily Prayer This Week— This is the week we call “Holy” because it is a memorial of God's saving deeds for us in Jesus. There is a solemn nature to this week. We might be tempted to be sad or conflicted this week. It is not easy to get close to the reality that we are sinners and our Lord and Savior went through this betrayal, suffering and death for us. So, sometimes, we avoid looking at this week closely, and praying with it, because we fear getting into our guilt. The invitation this week is to come closer to the reality of God's profound love for us. Yes, we are all sinners. But, we are loved sinners. We are being invited to be grateful, not to beat our breasts. We are invited, in this spirit to feel all that we can feel this week. Yes, we will feel some discomfort - after all, we feel discomfort when anyone puts themselves through some sacrifice for us. And, the sacrifice here is the gift of his very self - so that we might always know how completely Jesus entered into the reality of our human existence - “even death, death on a cross.” [Phil. 2:6-9] This week we follow our ongoing pattern of connecting with our Lord, as early as we can each morning. For even a few moments we name our desire: “Lord, let me be with you this week and open my heart to feel what you want me to feel about your love for me, personally.” Then, throughout the day, in many background, in-between moments, we can continue our brief conversations with our Lord as we relate this desire with the people and events of our day. Finally, each night, we can pause, perhaps before a crucifix, or placing ourselves in our imagination before the cross, and speaking to our Lord, friend to friend, the gratitude we feel for the gift of mercy and eternal life his love has gained for us. Taken from the "Weekly Guide for Daily Prayer" on the Creighton University's Online Ministries web site: http://

www.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/online.html. Used with

permission.

We will have available and

collect CORI forms after all of

the Masses this weekend. If you volunteer here at St. Francis, we ask you to do your part to ensure our compliance with the Archdiocese of Boston’s Policies and Procedures for the Protection of Children by completing this yearly requirement. CORI forms are also available at the parish office—feel free to stop by during business hours. Thank you to those who have already submitted their CORI forms.

Thank you to everyone who donated to our monthly Food Collection Sunday last weekend. Please know that we are always happy to accept non-perishable groceries at the parish office during business hours (M-F, 9-4) or financial assistance

via the blue SVDP envelopes found in the holders on the back inside wall of the church (and elsewhere). Please use one for your cash or check (written to St. Vincent DePaul with SFA on the memo line) and place it in the offertory basket, the rectory mail slot, or the US mail. ALSO, if you or anyone you know may be in need of an Easter meal, please contact the parish office.

March 25-Palm Sunday: Today is Palm Sunday and the beginning of the holiest of Christian weeks. Let us pray for the grace to take up our own cross and to follow Jesus through death to new life. During Lent, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring the mercy of Jesus into the hearts of the poor, by providing food, gifts, and limited financial assistance.

Our bereavement group begins this Tuesday, March 27 from 1-2:30PM in the SFA church hall. We are using a new series called “Seasons of Hope.” Meetings will continue on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 1PM. If you are grieving

the death of a loved one, please feel free to contact the parish for assistance.

CDA COURT ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI'S fund-raiser "Truly Eleanor" - a brief look at the struggles and triumphs of our most famous First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt--starring Lynne Moulton, Joseph Zamparelli, and Fran Baron--has been scheduled for Sunday, April 8th, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church Hall, 856 Washington St., Braintree. Included is the entertainment, a light luncheon, raffle, and bake sale. Tickets are $20/pp and are available at the Braintree Town Clerk's Office or by calling Margarete at 781-843-5917.

Maybe you were baptized but missed the opportunity to receive your first holy communion or be confirmed. Maybe you have questions about our faith. You can reach out to a member of our staff at any time by contacting the parish office or join us for an inquiry session, soon to be scheduled. If the words above do not resonate with you, please pass them along to someone you know who may be interested. God works through us, especially when we pay attention.

If you are a registered parishioner who utilizes the parish envelope system or the EFT option and would like a copy of your total contributions for 2017 please call the

parish office at 781-843-1332. If you do not currently utilize the parish envelope or EFT/online giving system, but would like to; or if you have any questions regarding your statement, please contact Patty Kinnally in the parish office.

As we listen to the final days of Jesus on earth from his celebratory entrance in Jerusalem to his brutal death on a cross, we might benefit from putting ourselves in the time and place with Jesus and ask ourselves some very revealing questions… Where would I be in this drama? Which person in the crowd? Would I be brave enough to help Jesus up when he falls or would I be standing on the side “filming it all”? What would I think of all I witnessed or would I just hit “send” and hope for “likes”. Pray for the courage to walk with Jesus during his dark journey and not stand insensitive on the sidewalk. Pray for closeness with Jesus so you can share in his pain, and most importantly, in his faith. So…Who will you be and how will your heart respond?

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

Stay Close and God Bless,

Diane Hopkins and Ronna Petrilli

N.E.A.S.C. Update - This past Tuesday, Mrs. Kathleen Madej, the chair of our N.E.A.S.C. visiting committee was finally able to visit SFA before experiencing any additional inclement weather. During her time with us, she had the great opportunity to tour our school and meet our faculty and students. Our co-chairs, Mrs. Horsman and Mrs. Lord, myself and Ms. Madej were able to finalize some plans for our upcoming accreditation visit, scheduled to begin on Sunday, April 29, 2018. This included confirming the readiness of the school for the full visit by inquiring into the status of the Self-Study, verifying that the school has secured documentation for all health and safety regulatory requirements and, ensuring that the financial audit will be ready for review. We also were able to set a tentative schedule for the visit and make sure that all arrangements for housing accommodations, meeting rooms, and technology expectations were all in place.

ENROLL TODAY— St. Francis of Assisi School is now accepting applications for all grade levels for the 2018-19 school year. For more information regarding our admissions procedure, simply visit our school’s website (www.sfab.org) or contact us at (781) 848-0842. Are you interested in learning more about what SFA offers for your child, its curriculum and extracurricular activities? Arrange your personalized visit/tour with our principal by contacting Brian Cote at (781) 848-0842 x12 or emailing [email protected]. We look forward to possibly serving your family in the spiritual, academic, and social development of your child.

From the

Archdiocese of

Boston March 25 ~ Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion Even though we know how today’s scripture ends, can we listen and ponder as if we are hearing it for the first time? “…at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Do your words confess that Jesus is Lord? Are we ready and willing to share Christ’s extraordinary love for us with others? Trust that the Lord will give us well-trained tongues, that we might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Then, invite someone to join you next week for Easter Mass.

Walking with Mary – a multicultural Marian Procession through the streets of Boston with Cardinal Seán O'Malley, will take place on Apr. 7 from 2:00-7:00PM. The program begins and ends at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (The Mission Church) in Boston, and includes an address by Cardinal Seán. Confession, adoration, praise, and worship will also be available following the procession. For more information, contact Gail Mattulina at [email protected].

3rd Annual Palliative Care Colloquium: Caring for the caregiver: How do we support those who care for the seriously ill? Please join the Archdiocese of Boston’s Initiative for Palliative Care and Advance Care Planning in welcoming guest speakers as they guide us through the challenging role of the caregiver in response to the needs of the seriously ill.

When: Saturday, April 14 Time: 8:00 AM – 1:00 AM Location: Pastoral Center, 66 Brooks Drive, Braintree Cost $15 (includes presentation and light refreshments) For more information please go to http://www.bostoncatholic.org/palliativecare/

Thank you to all who have participated in St. Francis of Assisi’s 2018 Catholic Appeal campaign. Through the generosity of Catholics like you, the Catholic Appeal strengthens the ministries that serve our Archdiocese and helps us to live our faith together. To make a pledge to the Catholic Appeal, please visit bostoncatholicappeal.org or pick up a pledge form at the entrances/exits of the church.

Thank you for your prayers and support.

Sharing the Gospel Your mom tells you, "Grandma should be here any minute." You watch out your window for her little red car to come down your street. After she parks her car, you run out to meet her. You are so happy she came to visit! The people in today's Gospel were waiting for a king to come. This king would ride into Jerusalem, not in a little red car, but on a donkey. When the people saw Jesus riding on the donkey, they knew he was the king that they were waiting for. They ran out to meet him and waved palm branches in the air. They were so happy he came. Prayer God, I am so happy you sent Jesus to be my king. Something to Draw Draw a picture of Jesus riding on a donkey. Draw yourself next to Jesus, waving a palm branch. Mission for the Week Invite your Grandma over to visit. Ask her to read John 12:12-16 to you.
