Jesus was content with doing each function rightly; he never allowed his interior dispositions to be altered or disturbed by the immediate fruitfulness of his labors. It is true that he felt keenly his repeated failures. But he never was tempted by the pain he suf- fered in his sensitive nature to renounce his enterprise; he never took refuge in inactivity, or in the execution of things which should meet with a better measure of success. (E. Leen, In the Likeness of Christ) *** At all times our Lord bore himself with the same calm, unchanging, unbroken, undeviating forti- tude. He did not waste valuable time in complaints or in self-pity. He wasted no energy in rebellion against circumstances. And he did not passively acquiesce to the inevitable with a gesture of indifference or despair. (E. Leen, In the Likeness of Christ) *** Even if I know what hell will be, I cannot really imagine what it will be to be hated by Christ, to hear, I dont know you(Mt 25:12). Yes; it will be better to suffer a thousand thunderbolts, than to see that face of mildness turning away from me, those eyes of peace not wanting to look upon me. He came to save me while I was his enemy, hating him, and turning away from him. He even gave himself up to death for me, and I rejected him. After all this, with what kind of eyes shall I ever again look at him? Notice his gentleness, he does not speak of his gifts. He does not say, You have despised me who have done so much for you.He does not say, You have rejected me. And I brought you into being; for your sake I made the earth, heaven, sea and air, and all things that are; I set you over all things on the earth; after been dishonored by you, I did not withdraw my- self from you, but thought of you after it all; I chose to become a slave; I was beaten with rods and spat upon; I was slain for you; I died the most shameful death for you; I intercede on high for you; I freely send you my Holy Spirit; I grant you a kingdom; I made you such promises; I am, for your sake, the Head of my Body, the Bridegroom, the Food and Drink, the Shepherd, and the King; I took you to be my brother, and heir; I brought you out of the darkness into my light. Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest

Rev. Canon Olivier Meney Episcopal Delegate for the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in the Diocese of Oakland

Canon Meney - (510) 604-0391 or [email protected]

YOU ARE AT SAINT MARGARET MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH HUB OF THE LATIN MASS LITURGY IN OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA

The Traditional Latin Mass (now called by the Holy Father: Mass in the Extraordinary Form) is brought to you through the ministry of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.

WHAT IS THE INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST?

The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is a Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right whose goal is the honor of God and the sanctification of priests in the ser-vice of the Church and souls. Its specific aim is missionary: to spread the reign of our Lord Jesus Christ in all spheres of human life. Our work is carried out under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception, to Whom the Institute is consecrated.

Recognizing the importance of a deep harmony between faith, liturgy, life, and the power of beauty in attracting the human senses to the things above, an integral part of the Institute’s charism is the use of the traditional Latin Liturgy of 1962 for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the other sacraments. Great care for a solemn liturgy, complete fidelity to the doctrine of the Church and the Holy Father, and awareness of the central role of Grace, especially Charity – these are essential elements of the Institute’s spirituality, which is drawn from its three co-patrons, St. Benedict, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Francis de Sales.

Our motto is “Live the truth in charity." The Institute operates in more than fifty places in twelve countries, where our priests focus on the care of souls in many different ways. To assist our priests in their apostolic work, the Institute also has clerical oblates. In 2004, a community of religious sisters was canonically established to aid the priests in their mis-sion through prayer and apostolic work.

The Institute was founded in 1990 by Monsignor Gilles Wach. Today, the motherhouse and international seminary of the Institute is located in Gricigliano, in the Archdiocese of Florence, Italy.

The Institute serves the faithful of the Bay since 2005 at St. Margaret Mary in Oakland and at Five Wounds in San Jose (Mass at 12:30 pm on Sunday, 12:15 pm on Weekdays but Sat. at 7:30 am)

For Better or For Worse The "believing wife" or the "believing hus-band," whichever the case may be, refuses entreaties to another marriage (while the spouse is living) not for the negative reason, "The Church will not allow me," but for the positive reason, because "I love in a Christian way." Each refusal is a deepening of the first love! Fidelity in crisis is therefore not something one "puts up with" or "makes the best of"; it is some-thing that is ardently chosen for love's sake. Homer had a better understanding of this than the modern pagans. Penelope, during the absence of her husband, was courted by many admirers. Each day she worked on a tapestry to keep her hands busy, while her heart awaited his return from the wars. The years rolled on, and though she was told her husband would never return, she still believed he would. Her faith was not based on his charm, but on the original gift of her love and his. She told her suitors she would marry when she finished her tapestry, but each night she would undo the stitches she knitted during the day, until Ulysses returned. It is a false idea of liberty to think that it promises a release from love in order to please one-self. No person in all the world is made happier by the breaking of a pledged love. There are certain things that once accepted are never to be surrendered. Food is one of them in the lower order. What is forci-bly ejected from the stomach has a mark of vileness and impurity. But it is pure compared to a love that is vomited from the heart. Hell is full of hearts which took back their love. As breathing in the same air the lungs exhaled is slow poison, so the lover who draws back into his heart the love he gave in marriage suf-fers a spiritual thrombosis, which is eternally disas-trous. Since marital love is the shadow cast on earth by the love of Christ for His Church, then it must have Christ's redemptive quality. As Christ delivered Himself up for His Spouse, so there will be some wives and some husbands who will deliver them-selves up to Golgotha for the sake of their spouses. The young suitor does not abandon his beloved be-cause she falls in the mud. Why then, when there is moral dirt into which she tumbles, should the hus-band claim that love does not demand the rescue? There is not a child who was ever born who did not introduce suffering into love. The coming into being of a new love is heralded by the labor of the mother, but the pain soon passes into joy. Our Lord uses this analogy to suggest that every pain nobly born can bring joy into the soul….(From Three To Get Mar-ried by Fulton Sheen)

Mary Our Guide and Model Month of May, month of Mary! The heart of every Christian turns spontaneously toward his heav-enly Mother, with a desire to live in closer intimacy with her and to strengthen the sweet ties which bind him to her. It is a great comfort on our spiritual way, which is often fatiguing and bristling with difficulties, to meet the gentle presence of a mother. One is so at ease near one’s mother. With her, everything be-comes easier; the weary, discouraged heart, disturbed by storms, finds new hope and strength, and continues the journey with fresh courage. “If the winds of temptation arise,” sings St. Bernard, “if you run into the reefs of trials, look to the star, call upon Mary. In danger, sorrow, or perplexity, think of Mary, call upon Mary.” There are times when the hard road of the “nothing” frightens us, mis-erable as we are and then, more than ever, we need her help, the help of our Mother. The Blessed Virgin Mary has, before us, trodden the straight and narrow path which leads to sanctity; before us she has carried the cross, before us she has known the ascents of the spirit through suffering. Sometimes, perhaps, we do not dare to look at Jesus the God-Man, who because of His divinity seems too far above us; but near Him is Mary, His Mother and our Mother, a privileged creature surely, yet a creature like ourselves, and therefore a model more accessible for our weakness. Mary comes to meet us during this month, to take us by the hand, to initiate us into the secret of her interior life, which must become the model and norm of our own. St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, referring to cer-tain discourses on the Blessed Virgin, said, “She is spoken of as unapproachable, whereas she should be represented as imitable.” Mary is inaccessible, it is true, in the sublime privileges whicih flow from her divine maternity, and it is right to consider these pre-rogatives in order to admire and contemplate them, to praise our Mother’s greatness and hence always to love her more and more; but, at the same time, we must consider Mary in the concrete picture of her earthly life. It is a simple, humble picture, which nev-er leave the framework of the ordinary life common to all mothers; under this aspect, Mary is truly imitable. Our program for the month of May, then, will be to contemplate the grandeurs of Mary, that we may be stimulated to imitate her virtues. We shall consider Mary especially as the ideal and the model of our interior life. No one has under-stood, as she did, the depth of meaning in the words of Jesus: “But one thing is necessary,” and no one has lived by these words better than she. (From Divine Intimacy by Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene OCD)

To support the work of the Institute of Christ the King, Divine Providence has brought about the formation of a community of contemplative nuns dedicated to reparation and adoration of the Royal Heart of Jesus Christ Sovereign Priest. Leading a non-cloistered contemplative life, the sisters offer their daily prayers and sacrifices particularly for the priests of the Institute and the souls entrusted to them.

In June 2004, Ennio Cardinal Antonelli, Archbishop of Florence, vested the first three sisters with their hab-it. In Spring 2007, they already number nine sisters and four postulants, from France and the United States.

Like the priests and oblates of the Institute, the Adorers of the Royal Heart hold three co-patrons as the guiding lights of their spirituality: St. Francis de Sales, St. Benedict, and St. Thomas Aquinas. From St. Francis de Sales' doctrine of Divine Love, the sisters draw the pattern of their vocation: to be in constant pursuit of growth in Love, which should always be founded on Truth.

The Benedictine aspect of their charism is reflected in the central place of the Church's Liturgy in their daily life. Holy Mass and the Divine Office celebrated in the classical Roman form, form the rhythm of each day. In St. Thomas Aquinas, the sisters find the clar-ity and structure of thought necessary for their formation and ever-deepening understanding of the mysteries of our Catholic Faith. Finally, it is through their principal patroness, the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception, that they seek to conform their lives and their whole beings to the Royal Heart of Her Divine Son--thus their motto, In Corde Regis ("in the Heart of the King").

Their day is centered around prayer - Holy Mass and the Divine Office in the traditional Latin form, one hour of mental prayer and one hour of Eucharistic adoration in the evening, the Rosary, etc. Punctuating this rich life of prayer are periods of manual labor and intellectual training, including instruction in Gregorian Chant, Latin, Spirituality, Philosophy, and Theology, as well as the learning of crafts such as sewing, lace-making, and the care of liturgical vestments and altar linens.

Bright Future As the community expands, it is foreseen that foundations will be made alongside the apostolates of the Institute of Christ the King, where the sisters will be able to provide support for the apostolic work of our priests. It is foreseeable that the sisters will eventually make a foundation in the United States. There are at present two American sisters, and the amount of vocational inquiries from the United States is ever increasing.

Recently, the Sisters were given a building that will serve as their future convent. At present, it is in need of extensive repair. Howev-er, the Sisters are certain that with prayer, generous donors will come to realize the importance of their work.

Vocations For inquiries about vocations to the Sisterhood, please contact the Institute's US Provincial Headquarters in Chicago.
