ShaliFloor NM Non-Metallic Floor Hardener
Description
ShaliFloor NM (formerly known as Shalimar Surflex) is a quartz-silica mixture of finely graded non-metallic aggregates, plasticizer and cement binder. It is an economical concrete floor hardener recommended for both interior and exterior use. It is particularly valuable because of its non-rusting characteristics when floors will be frequently wet.
Characteristics
Physical Appearance Cementitious powder Compressive strength – 28 days
60 – 70 N/mm2
Abrasion Resistance Treated concrete will
give 150 - 225 % better abrasion resistance then control concrete
Coverage Light Traffic Medium Traffic Heavy Traffic
3.5 – 4.0 Kg/ m
2
4.5 – 5.0 Kg/ m2
6.5 – 7.0 Kg/ m2
Application
Shalimar Surflex is used whenever floor surfaces will be subjected to light-to-heavy usage, whenever abrasion resistant or non-rusting floors are specified i.e. car park areas of commercial and public buildings, food processing & electronics industries, breweries, restaurants, diaries, automobile showrooms and service centers, warehouses, loading docks and high traffic aisleways.
Advantages
• Hardens concrete in one economical operation.
• Wear resistant-use of hard and properly graded aggregates increases the wear resistant over plain concrete floors.
• Can be used in conjunction with vacuum dewatered concrete at maximum of 5 kgm2 spread
rate.
• Non-rusting materials make it possible to use Shalimar Surflex outdoors as well as indoors.
• Special dispersing agent contained in Shalimar Surflex makes it possible to incorporate Shalimar Surflex into the surface of low slump concrete resulting in exceptionally high surface strengths for maximum wear resistance.
Application Methodology
These directions are to be followed for application of Shalimar Surflex on well designed, non-air entrained concrete mixes. Keep air content of the concrete below 3%. Minimum cement content per cu m of concrete is 300 kg & slump required is 50 to 70 mm.
• Sub-grade and Reinforcing: Special attention should be given to a well-compacted and level sub-grade. A sub-grade that is not well compacted could cause cracking in the slab. Follow the specifications for use if reinforcing bars or welded wire mesh.
• Check the specifications for the amount of hardener required per square meter then stick the correct number of bags at each bay to be placed that day. This is important because it gives the finishers a “gauge” for applying the right amount of material.
• Place concrete between screed points and strike off a level of finished floor.
• Use float or darby to level surface. To remove excess water, drag surface with a burlap or sack.
• After the concrete has stiffened somewhat, open the surface by floating with hand wood or power float.
Page No : 95
• For best results and uniformity of thickness, ShaliFloor NM should be applied in two shakes using approximately two-thirds of the total amount for the first shake.
• First ShaliFloor NM Shake: Immediately after the surface has been opened by floating, apply the first shake when the screeded slab is free of surface water and has set to a degree that when a man stands on the slab he leaves footprints about 5 mm deep maximum.
• Allow the first shake to remain unworked on the surface, until it has absorbed moisture and is of uniform colour. Then float with hand wood or power float. Immediately after, apply second shake at right angles to the first one, making application to the edges first.
• After second shake has absorbed its moisture, float in the same manner as outlined above working the edges then cross floating for a level surface.
• Steel Troweling: When the surface has set sufficiently so that no additional water or fines are brought to the surface, steel troweling shall be done on the floor. During this operation the trowel should be slightly raised to give a hard and smooth finish. Leave troweling operation half, if broom finish is required.
• Curing is essential for concrete floor treated with ShaliFloor NM. This can be done by using suitable curing compound manufactured by STP Ltd like Shalicure PA. Alternatively using water ponding method or polyethene sheeting is also acceptable.
Health & Safety
• Use mask, nose cover and hand gloves during application.
• Clean hands with soap water after application.
• Ensure adequate ventilation and avoid inhalation of dust.
• Avoid contact with skin / eyes. In case of unlikely contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of clean water, then cleanse with soap and lukewarm water and seek medical advice. Do not use solvent to clean the contacted area.
• Prevent swallowing. In case of unlikely swallowing, seek medical attention immediately. Do not induce vomiting.

Physical Appearance
Cementitious grey powder
The following results were obtained at a water:power ration of 0.15 @ 30 OC
Application
• Parking decks
• Floor toppings
• Joint repairs
• Equipment bases
• Pedestals
• Pavements
Advantages
• Can be used as a pumpable or pourable repair micro concrete where access is restricted.
• Highly fluid to allow for placement without vibration.
• Compensates for shrinkage by expansion.
• Premixed, ready to use.
• Long working time
• High strengths with low permeability.
• Chloride free.
Application Methodology
• New concrete must be a minimum of 28 days if an epoxy adhesive will be used to the topping. If a slurry bond coat is used, the concrete must be a minimum of 3 days old.
• The concrete must be clean and rough. All oil, dirt, debris, paint and unsound concrete must be removed. The surface must be prepared mechanically using a scrabber, brush hammer, shot blast or scarifier which will give a surface profile of a minimum 1/8” ( # mm) and expose the large aggregate of the concrete.
• The final step is cleaning should be the complete removal of all residue with a vacuum cleaner or pressure washing. All concrete must possess an open surface texture with all curing compounds and sealers removed. Several hours prior to placing, the concrete substrates should be saturated with clean water. Remove any standing water. Alternatively, use a bonding system.
• After the surface has been prepared, prime all area with either a slurry coat of Shalimar SBR Latex or an epoxy bonding agent such as CORR-BOND. The primer bonding agent must be ordered separately.
Page No : 99
• Edges should be saw cut to ¼ ” (6 mm) deeper than the topping thickness and repair to provide a locked in reinforced edge. Moving joints as in the case of expansion joints should be brought up through the repair by saw cutting or with the use of divider strip.
• Exposed rebar may be treated with an anti- corrosion coating such as CORR-BOND or ShaliPrime Zn. Remove all loose rust and scaling, preferably by sandblasting to white metal prior to coating the rebar.
• For repair sections generally deeper than 100 mm it may be necessary to mix the ShaliFix MC with properly graded 5 mm to 12 mm silt free aggregate to minimize temperature rise. The quantity of aggregate required may vary depending on the nature and configuration of the repair location. It should be a max. of 8 kg pea gravel per bag of ShaliFix MC.
• Small quantities may be mixed with a drill and “jiffy” mixer. Use a paddle type mortar mixer
for large jobs. All materials should be in the proper temperature range of 15 OC – 32
OC.
• Add the appropriate amount of water for the batch size and then add the dry product. Mix a minimum of three minutes.
• If pea gravel is to be added, do so now and mix an additional 2-3 minutes. The mixed product should be transported to the repair area and placed immediately.
• Discharge material from mixer and place. For patching with a trowel, come –a-long, or square tipped shovel to a thickness that matches the surrounding concrete.
• Finish to desired texture. On large floor areas, used screed strips as guides in combination with vibratory screeding to level. Compact and finish by hand or machine trowel.
• If placed by pump, standard concrete pumping practice should be followed.
• If poured in the form work, avoid air entrapment by pouring from one side only.
• Finish the repair material to the desired texture. Do not add additional water to the surface during the finishing operation.
• To prevent surface cracking, cure the floor with curing compound, such ShaliSuper Rezseal. In hot, windy or direct sunlight situations, re-wet the surface after the curing compound has dried and cover with polyethylene for a minimum of three days. If curing compound is not desired, wet cure for a minimum of three days.
