PSYCHROMETRIC CHART- Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Partner: Camille Adkins, looking at Los Angeles, California, USA If the temperature is 80 and the relative humidity is 40%, what is the dew point? 53 for Addis Ababa If it is 90 with 60% RH outside, and you were to air condition the space to 68 and 50%, how much would the humidity ration change? How would you do this? A change from .018 to .007, causes to change the ratio by .009. Heating or Internal Heat Gain and Dehumidification. If the dry bulb temperature is 78 and the wet bulb is 50, what is the RH? 8% Describe the climate of your city? Hot/cold? Humid/dry? Consistent/extreme? The climate of Addis Ababa is moderate, mostly within the 50-70 range, it is normally quite humid, above the 60% humidity all the time, and quite consistent temperatures with only a few months of higher temperatures in the summer. What geographical features contribute to the climate conditions? Addis Ababa falls within the subtropical highland climate group. Because of its high elevation, the temperatures are moderate and because it is close to the equator, the temperatures are relatively stable across all the months. During what months of the year does the temperature fall most often within the comfort zone? Dec-Feb have the most recorded temperatures in the comfort zone.

PSYCHROMETRIC CHART- Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Partner: Camille Adkins, looking at Los Angeles, California, USA

If the temperature is 80 and the relative humidity is 40%, what is the dew point? 53 for Addis Ababa

If it is 90 with 60% RH outside, and you were to air condition the space to 68 and 50%, how much would the humidity ration change? How would you do this?A change from .018 to .007, causes to change the ratio by .009.Heating or Internal Heat Gain and Dehumidification.

If the dry bulb temperature is 78 and the wet bulb is 50, what is the RH? 8%

Describe the climate of your city? Hot/cold? Humid/dry? Consistent/extreme?The climate of Addis Ababa is moderate, mostly within the 50-70 range, it is normally quite humid, above the 60% humidity all the time, and quite consistent temperatures with only a few months of higher temperatures in the summer.

Which passive design strategies are most effective in expanding the comfort zone? Which is the least effective?

Internal Heat Gain is the most effective strategy for expanding the comfort zone, adding 78% of the days to comfortable levels, Passive Solar Direct Gain for Low Mass is also very effective. The least effective strategies are thermal masses, evaporative cooling, and ventilation cooling, they only effect hottest the recorded temperatures that are above 75, which are only sporadic each month.

Is it possible to achieve a high percentage of comfort in Addis Ababa using only passive design strategies? What are the biggest climate design challenges? Using only Passive Design strategies, 86% of the days are comfortable. And the biggest climate challenge is when the humidity is 80-100% and when the temperature is in the low 50s.
