Epithelial/Connective Tissue

A215 Laboratory

What is Tissue?

• Tissue = Similar cells that perform a

common function

• 4 Types:

– Epithelium

– Connective Tissue

– Muscle

– Nervous Tissue

Epithelium

• Epithelium = Tissue lining cavities and

surfaces of the body

– One side of the epithelium is connected to

a “basement membrane”

– The other side is unbound

2 Groups of Epithelia

Connective Tissue

• Tissue that BINDS, PROTECTS, and

SUPPORTS other tissues and organs

– No free surface

– 3 components:

• Cells

• Fibers – collagen, elastin, reticular

• Ground substance

Groups of Connective Tissues

• Areolar Connective

• Adipose

• Dense IrregularConnective
