S1 Finding Your Inspiring Leadership Mojo
Finding Our Inspiring Leadership Mojo
Let’s:
• Talk Turkey
• Tell Tales
• Learn from the best
• Take away some practical tips
• Remember that if we get this right – the bottom line improves & so does the happiness & wellbeing of you and your people.
Yay to that!
Finding Your Leadership Mojo in Times of Change
• Get excited about & buy-into the new (you can’t inspire others if you’re not inspired yourself)
• Know yourself as well as your people & address both your needs, including naming and dealing with your fears
• Walk the talk – be the behaviour you expect in others
• Know when to lead and when to manage
• Be super clear about the vision & have a plan to deliver
• Attract the right people onto the right seats on the bus
‘Faced with the choice
between changing one's mind
and proving that there is no need to,
almost everyone gets busy on the proof.’
JK Galbraith (Economist)
"Everyone thinks of changing the world,
but no one thinks of changing himself."
Tolstoy
"The most powerful leadership tool you have
is your own example."
John Wooden

"The very essence of leadership
is that you have to have a vision.
It's got to be a vision you articulate clearly
and forcefully on every occasion.
You can't blow an uncertain trumpet."
Theodore M. Hesburgh

Expiring Leaders
1. Paint a vague or ever-changing picture of the future
2. Tell their teams how to achieve their goals & keep plans
close to their chest (to change things)
3. Leave the team in the dark about progress to maintain
control over consequences and rewards
4. Look for people doing something wrong and punish them
5. Create barriers to getting work done

Expiring Leaders
6. Sweep performance issues under the rug if they’re tough to address
7. Talk more than listen
8. Talk about team values but make decisions using "real business
criteria"
9. Take credit for team success & view people as parts in the business
9. Care about results & profits more than on the people that deliver them
10. Communicate using the "no news is good news" philosophy

Leading Through Change
If you could only have three things to remember….
1.Communicate
2.Communicate
3.Communicate
And remember…
Inspiring leadership can be trained
A 2013 Harvard Business School study proved it!
Inspiring Leaders1. Install a rigorous selection process to ensure they hire only the best and brightest
2. Set out a compelling vision, collaborate with their team on a plan for realising that & keep it visible
3. Keep score along the way to keep the team energised and accountable
4. Eliminate barriers to getting work done, look for people doing something right, recognise it & credit it
5. Address even minor performance issues with proactive coaching
6. Listen more than they talk
7. Uncompromisingly uphold the team's values by using them to make big and little decisions
8. Get to know the person behind the employee - care about their people not just performance
9. Focus on the organisation's purpose as much as (if not more) than profits
10. Consistently and frequently communicate even when there is apparently no news
Successful Inspiring Leaders Know…

3. To demonstrate behaviours that reveal their beliefs

Successful Inspiring Leaders Know…

7. To show respect – it’s not granted it’s earned
8. Not to confuse movement with progress
9. That victims can’t do giant things
10. That life is short – so be of use
