Using the traffic lights

On the next page you will see a summary chart which you can use as further check for planning and support. Obviously, any system like this is fairly crude and

cannot fully represent the needs of each child. However, by looking through the sections and marking them of, after

discussions with the family, specialist staff and meeting the child, you will have a rough idea about the level of differentiation they are going to require.

The higher the number of ticks in the red section, the greater the child’s need for individual planning and help and the greater your need to have access to specialists for support and advice. We

recognise that the children with the highest level of need will set you great challenges but they can also provide the highest levels of reward

when you get things right and you see them progress in your care.

TRAFFIC LIGHTS – the more RED lights the greater the need for differentiation, specialist input, advice and support.
