The C4 Synth: How Does It Work? BeforedivingfullyintotheC4SynthanditsNeuroEditor,itisimportanttounderstandthebasicinternallayoutandsignalpath.BelowisasimpleblockdiagramthatillustratestheC4’sSignalPathandResourceBlocks:
Step1.TheVoices:FirstinlinearetheC4’sVoices(therearefourofthem,hencethename“C4”).AssignedeachactivatedVoicetoitsownSoundSource(Sine,Square,orSawOscillator/MonophonicPitch/PolyphonicPitch/DrySignal).MixtogethermultipleVoicestocreateasingleamazingpreset.
Step2.RoutetheVoices:SendeachVoicetoeitherProcessorPath1(Drive1,Filter1,etc.)orProcessorPath2(Drive2,Filter2,etc.).RouteeachindividualVoicethroughyourdesiredblocks:theDrive,theFilter,ordirectlytotheWetMix.

1. TurntheINPUTknoballthewaydown.2. Continuouslypluckyourinstrumentatyouraveragepluckingvelocity.3. SlowlyturnuptheINPUTknobupuntilthecenterLEDstartsflashingred.
ThisflashingindicatesthatyouhavereachedtheoptimumINPUTlevel.Leavetheknobwhereitis–theprocessiscomplete.
• SENSITIVITY(SecondaryParameter).Adjustshowreactivetheenvelopefilteristotheincomingsignal.Ifyouliketoplayhard,butstillwantasmoothermorerelaxedenvelopefilter,youshouldturndowntheSENSITIVITY.Forasharperresponsetolighterplaying,turnuptheSENSITIVITY.

TheEngage/BypassLEDalsoplaysarolewhencalibratingtheINPUTlevel.GototheINPUT/SENSEKnobsectionofthismanualforinstructionsoncalibratingtheINPUTlevel.
Alternate Function LED ThesmallLEDlocatedbetweentheINPUTandMIXknobsistheAlternate(ALT)ParameterLED.PressingtheALTbuttonputstheC4intoAlternateParametermode,indicatedbytheblinkingLED.Ifaperiodof6secondspasseswithoutmovinganyknobsorthetoggleswitch,theAlternateParameterLEDwillstopblinkingandtheknobswillreturntotheirprimaryparameter.

Standard (Default) Mode InStandardModeeachpresetengageswithapre-programmedpreset,meaningthephysicalpositionsoftheknobsdonotaffectthesoundofthepreset.Itis,however,possibletoreachdownandmakeknobadjustmentsonthefly.If,aftermakingaknobadjustment,thepedalisbypassedthenreengagedwithoutmovingthetoggleswitch,thesoundwillcontinuetoreflectthenewknobpositions.Ifthetoggleswitchismoved(regardlessofwhethertheeffectisengagedorengaged),thepedalwillreverttotheparametersettingsofthesavedpreset.
Preset Mode PresetModeworkssimilartotheStandard(Default)Modewithonekeydifference,itallowsyoutore-savethepresetaftermakingknobadjustments.Soupontheinitialengagementofapresettheknobparameterswillinstantlyjumptotheirsavedvalues,regardlessofthephysicalpositionoftheknobs.However,ifyoudomakeaknobadjustment,thecenterLEDwillstarttoblink,indicatingthateditshavebeenmade.AftermakinganadjustmentyoucansavethenewsettingsbypressingandholdingthefootswitchuntilthecenterLEDstopsblinking(aroundfiveseconds).

WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Mode InWYSIWYGModetheC4functionsmuchlikeatraditionaleffectspedal.Itisa”WhatYouSeeIsWhatYouGet”experience,meaningthatthecurrentphysicalpositionsoftheknobswillindicatethesettingsoftheprimaryknobfunctions.Note:Ifyoumovethetoggleswitchtoanewpositionalltheprimaryknobparameterswillmaintainthesettingsofthephysicalknobpositions,butthesecondaryknobfunctions(SENSITIVITYandVOL)willreverttotheirdefaultsettings.
Universal Bypass TM Mosteffectpedalsoffereithertruebypassorbufferedbypass.TheC4Synthcontainstwoseparatecircuitsforbypassmode,allowingyoutochoosethemethodyouprefer.Thetruebypasspathusessignalrelays,whichareelectromechanicalswitches.Thisprovidesanultra-lowresistancepathfromtheinputjackstotheoutputjacks,whichiseffectivelythesameasasinglewire.Thebufferedbypasspathusesextremelylownoisebuffers,whichprovideverylowoutputimpedanceandareeffectivefordrivinglongcablesorlongchainsofeffectsfollowingtheC4’saudiooutput.
Outofthebox,theC4operatesintruebypassmode.Toselectadifferentbypassmode,opentheC4’sHardwareOptionsmenuintheNeuroMobileApporDesktopEditor,thenselectanoptionfromthe“HardwareBypassMode”pulldownmenu.
Werecommendusingthebypassmethodbestsuitedforyoursignalchain.Ideally,thefirstpedalinasignalchainisabufferedinputfollowedbytruebypassintherestofthesignalchain.
Bothbypassmethodshaveprosandconsassociatedwiththem.Bufferedbypassprovidesconsistentinputimpedancesothatifthesourceissusceptibletovariationsininputimpedance(similartoaguitarpickup),therewon’tbeanoticeablechangeintone.Truebypasshasthebenefitofprovidingadedicatedhardwiredbypasssignalpath.TheC4featuressmall-signalrelaysfortruebypassswitchingthatofferreducedpopsandclickscomparedtothetraditionaltruebypassswitchingmethodusingamechanicalswitch.
