Craigflower Schoolhouses long-standing tenancy problems have come to an end, as the Hallmark Heritage Society are set to move in March 1 next year.

Hallmark is the leading resource for heritage homes and buildings on the South Island, so its a perfect fit for the society, said president Ken Johnson.

Its a heritage group moving into a heritage building and well grow into this place. We cant wait to run workshops and lectures in the main classroom oriented towards the home-owner of heritage homes or older homes, he said.

There are about 600 designated heri-tage homes in Victoria and another 300 in Saanich, plus about 20,000 homes built in the region before 1945, he added.

The professional contractor has already made several visits since sign-ing the lease with the Heritage Branch of the provincial government two weeks ago.

For the past two years the building had been used as the office headquar-ters of the Craigflower Bridge Replace-ment Project, which was completed in May.

    SAANICH NEWS - Friday, December 12, 2014 www.saanichnews.com A3

New Saanich-based camp gets adults, kids back to natureTravis Paterson News staff

Most mornings start the same for Daniella Roze, who finds a place in nature to meditate on life and the day ahead. But she doesnt need to travel far.

Nature, in this instance, is the lush urban forest of Summit Park, the gem of a green belt situated beside the Summit water reservoir off Finlayson and Cook streets, a scant hike up the hill from Rozes Fernwood home.

When people are living close to the land and community, some-thing magical happens: thats where Ive met the happiest peo-ple Ive met in my whole life. Roze says.

During the day, Roze who spent five years of her adult life living without electricity or run-ning water relocates to her office, an untainted enclave of West Saanich where she launched

Thriving Roots Wilderness School in September.

Thriving Roots offers short- and long-term wilderness living courses for kids eight and over and adults. An upcoming nine-week adult nature immersion is seeing strong interest, says Roze, who has spent a lifetime learning how to live off the land.

Shes immersed herself for six months in West African tribal living as a 19-year-old, and more recently, spent four years in a hand-built, remote cabin in the Comox Valley without power and water. She and her fellow adventurers called them-selves the Red Alders.

Gathering water and food on a daily practice brings a sense of joy and fulfillment and passion to peoples lives, she says. It was from my time spent in rural areas that I connected with nature and felt my lifes purpose was to share this with people, this deep connec-tion that comes from learning how to live from the land.

The response has been stronger for the long term programs than it has for the single day events, though Roze is equally excited to

offer a Sacred Fire Workshop on Sunday, and a study of nourishing wild winter plants on Dec. 21.

Roze takes pride in helping oth-ers build a relationship with the natural world and re-connect the part of ourselves which has an innate need to be in the wilderness. Through nature, people have an amazing capacity for healing and becoming a thriving, fuller human being, she says.

The adult nature immersion pro-gram runs on Sundays starting Jan. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a focus on the basic skills to craft the tools and clothes necessary to sur-vive in the wild, as well as hunting and gathering skills.

Students will also visit the ocean and harvest foods there, such as seaweed and other herbal medi-cines, Roze says.

Wilderness schools are part of the rewilding movement thats growing. Wilderness skills are part of community building that help us to become really alive, and fully fur-nishes (lesser used) parts of our-selves.

Roze also runs a weekly program for home-schooled children, just

as she did on Cortes Island before relocating here. Before that she worked at Twin Eagles Wilderness School in Idaho and attended a wil-derness school for a year.

She once spent four months with an immersion group building tools and clothes necessary to live by the wild, which they then did for one month.

Help Prevent Heart Attacks with Vitamin C and Lysine Powder

Why is heart attack the Why is heart attack the Wnumber one killer in this Wnumber one killer in this Wcountry? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say its due to athero-sclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiolo-gists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack.

Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy colla-gen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack.

Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Welling-ton University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.

Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proven that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took retinal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries.

Sixteen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to refuse cholesterol-lowering drugs. Instead, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal.

I knew that Dr. Graveline, a physician and NASA astronaut, had twice developed transient global amnesia from taking cholesterol lowering drugs (CLDs). I was also aware that patients have died from CLDs. Others have developed kidney, liver and muscle complications.

I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens ir-refutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent.

But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. Its a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years Ive been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus is available at health food stores and specialty pharmacies.

The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop mixed with water or juice with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day.

This column does not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. That is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors.

As for me I bet my life on vitamin C and lysine! I turned 90 this year.

    Smash and grabslikely connected

Saanich police believe two overnight commercial break and enters in the span of two days are possibly connected.

The incidents occurred Dec. 6 and Dec. 8, both took place around 5:45 a.m. and both targeted electronic goods at national retailer.

The Dec. 6 break and enter left Sears Home Centre on Tolmie Avenue short $4,400 worth of Panasonic TVs and a Dyson fan/heater after someone

smashed the glass door to gain entry.

On Monday night, Shoppers Drug Mart in Gorge Plaza lost $10,000 worth of of game consoles, tablet computers and other small electronics. The thieves used the same entry method of smashing the front glass door, said Sgt. Steve Eassie.

Given the similar circumstances of these two break-ins, considering the timing of events, the manner in which entry has been gained, and the type of items being taken, its believed that these two events may have been perpetrated by the same individuals, Eassie said.

Police are searching for two Caucasian men who

were driving a silver Ford Ranger near the scenes of the crimes. One man had a beard and both were dressed in dark clothing.

    Saanich mannabbed by VicPD

A fleet-footed criminal, wanted for outstanding warrants and prohibited driving, was arrested after a short foot pursuit with VicPD officers on Saturday morning.

At approximately 3 a.m., a VicPD dog officer was patrolling the Rock Bay neighbourhood when he noticed a vehicle driving around the block repeatedly.

The officer followed the vehicle and called for

backup. The suspicious driver eventually got out of his car and the officer immediately recognized him as a prohibited driver.

When a second officer came on scene, the suspect fled on foot before being apprehended.

A 35-year-old Saanich man was arrested and charged on four outstanding warrants and for breaching his court-ordered curfew. Officers also found a small quantity of methamphetamine on the suspect.

Officers are recommending charges of obstructing a police officer and failing to comply with a recognizance in addition to the warrants.

Adam Olsen, member of Saanich-based First Nation, says NEB process flawedTim CollinsBlack Press

B.C. Green Party Interim Leader, Adam Olsen, testified before the National Energy Boards (NEB) hearings Nov. 25 to discuss the expansion of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline.

But, although Olsens testimony was applauded by the Green Party, his appearance before the hearings was as a representative of the Tsartlip First Nation in the WSNEC (Saanich) territory.

Born in Victoria, Olsen and his three siblings were raised on the Tsartlip First Nation in Brentwood Bay. Olsen continues to live on the property where he grew up.

While Olsen said that he has concerns about the pipelines safety, his testimony before the NEB was limited to the concerns relevant to his intervener status and the elements of the plan that directly impacted him as a representative of his First Nation.

In his testimony, Olsen emphasized the commercial and economic value of Aboriginal fisheries, which have been sustainably developed through traditional Aboriginal practices such as reef net fishing.

Olsen explained that the Aboriginal legal right to carry on the fishery guaranteed by the [Douglas] treaty is unqualified.

I am directly affected [by the Kinder Morgan project] because I am part of the Douglas Treaty and the route of shipping traffic is directly over the places that we fish, he said.

Olsen said the current level of tanker traffic is already in question given the provisions of the Douglas Treaty.

Now, before they settle those concerns, they are proposing a plan that would see a vast increase in the number of tankers. Theyve violated one part of the contract and now, before theyve resolved that issue, they want to add to the violation, said Olsen.

But some of Olsens greatest criticisms were directed to what he calls a poor process.

    They removed oral cross examination

from the hearings, and by so doing theyve undermined the whole process, he said. Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Andrew Weaver raised similar concerns during the hearing process earlier this year.

Look at how most of the information on the Enbridge pipeline was finally disclosed. It came from oral cross examination, Olsen said.

This is one of the first times that theyve removed that part of the process. The strength of any evidence lies in its strength against cross examination. Its a mechanism that should be available to all interveners.

Olsen said that when decisions like this are made it does nothing to give his people or anyone else any confidence in the outcome of the hearings. He said that what is really necessary is an independent provincial government sponsored environmental assessment of the project.

The NEB has a strong record of never saying no, said Olsen.

Theyll approve it with a long list of conditions and by doing so theyll kick it back to the federal government and thatll be it. Its a charade. Theatre.

Olsen acknowledges that he walks a bit of a tightrope between his political party and his status as a member of a First Nation, but maintains that it is in everyones best interest to work out the rights of First Nations before proceeding with even more violations of the original treaty.

In the end, our issues are linked, he said. This process isnt really going to calculate the grand cost. Even if you do account for the potential cost you know, those losses of habitats, the damage to culture and tradition, the decimation of entire ways of life, I doubt youll put it all together.

Olsen is not alone in his concern about the process being applied to the NEB hearings.

Marc Eliesen, a former board member of Suncor Energy, CEO of B.C. Hydro, Chair of Manitoba Hydro and deputy minister in several federal and provincial governments, recently withdrew from the hearing process and said the NEB was failing in its duty to provide an unbiased, transparent evaluation.

This is nothing more than a dog and pony show, Olsen said.

Old schoolhouse tenant a perfect fit

The pending move-in of the Hallmark Heritage Society into the remarkably intact walls of the old Craigflower schoolhouse is an applaudable partnership.

How the 1854 schoolhouse believed to be the oldest original of its kind in B.C. has spanned three centuries without burning to the ground is anyones guess.

But the grand plans of the Hallmark crew will certainly go a long way to breathing new life into the Saanich treasure.

The society has been tracking the lifespan and history of hundreds of buildings across Greater Victoria since 1973, and while its volunteers still have months of work ahead of them, the promise of an accessible archive combined with public engagement will only strengthen their impact in the years ahead.

According to the society, Hallmarks library and archives contain rare and valuable publications, photographs and over 8,000 slides. The society also has a collection of reference books on heritage preservation and history, and they maintain documents on over 8,000 buildings in the Capital Region.

Hallmarks executive is currently awaiting word from the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations on an application for Nominal Rent Tenure, which would allow the non-profit to operate on the Crown land without paying typical rent fees.

An affirmative sponsorship decision from the province would trigger the next part in the process, which involves consultation with First Nations and other ministries and agencies to ensure there are no issues with the land being released to the applicant.

Fingers crossed for Hallmark, as Craigflower schoolhouse needs exactly the type of heritage-minded stewardship the society will provide.

Hallmark relies on membership dues to fund its work, so check out their website today or visit them in their current location at Ross Bay Villa, 1490 Fairfield Rd.

With urgent action required to forestall the most severe effects of climate change, and with poverty and inequality continuing, how do we celebrate Christmas?

We can give fewer and useful presents, requiring less transport. We can offer time rather then things. We can avoid lavish feasts and displays. We can travel less.

In the names of friends and family members, we can donate to organizations that provide essentials, including basic nutrition, to people in dire need.

We can limit lighting, perhaps convincing the provincial government that Site C is unnecessary and making Christmas along the Peace merry and bright.

CRD should take advantage of fresh start

On Nov. 15, the region voted for change with the election of many fresh faces. Can these new directors help move the Capital Regional District past its disunity, smooth

ruffled feathers and build regional consensus?

Progress is needed on issues of transportation, waste management and the environment.

With sewage treatment, it is not just a race to get something done before the deadline and collect provincial and federal funding. It is much more.

It is a balancing act of respecting the electorates desire to incorporate sustainability, environmental concerns, safety and community needs at a reasonable cost. A quick solution is not a solution at all, if it doesnt address these important electorate needs.

For the last three years, the CRD establishment has refused to reconsider its approach to sewage

treatment, stalling the extention of project deadlines and refusing to renegotiate funding agreements. Instead it has chosen to use these deadlines and funding restrictions as pressure points to attempt to force forward their secondary treatment plan.

But with new committee membership, isnt it time to move away from these old habits, build consensus with the core communities, and make forward progess for the benefit of the region as a whole?

Hopefully over the next four years directors can come together to stimulate change.

President Ken Johnson of the Hallmark Heritage Society is happy to make the historical Craigflower Schoolhouse the societys new office next year. Its also an opportunity for Hallmark to grow, as they plan to offer classes and workshops, in addition to their role as a heritage resource for the Captial Region.

Heritage buffs have big plans for schoolhouse

Hallmark initially responded to a request for proposals in June.

We are looking forward to the office space, Johnson said. Right now were hemmed into one room at the Ross Bay Villa and our files alone take up so much space, only one per-son can work in there.

The schoolhouse was built in 1854 by the Hudsons Bay Company, and is believed to be the oldest standing school in B.C.

It served as a school until 1911, and in 1931 the Native Sons and Daughters of B.C. turned it into a museum, which it remained, off and on, until The Land Conservancy finally backed out a few years ago.

Hallmark will pay a total of $6,804 for the first years rent. But to secure a permanent residence, sustainabil-ity likely depends on the ability to qualify for a six-year term lease with a Nominal Rent Tenure of $1 per year, which is approved for certain classes of groups.

The application for a Nominal Rent Tenure may take some time and it is not certain. We feel we have an excellent chance of getting one, said Johnson.

Sweetening the deal is the B.C. Heritage Branchs commitment to a series of renovations to be done before Hallmark moves in. That includes deactivating the chimneys from the grand fireplaces, as heat-ing is currently the biggest cost of running the building, Johnson said. (Forced air was installed in the 1970s). New storm windows, lights the ceilings remain bare as the build-ing has been lamp lit since it was built in 1854 and a hot water tank are also on the way, as well as some bathroom upgrades.

All of the antique furniture from the schoolhouses museum days has been put into storage, but you can

bet well throw up pictures and inter-pretations, Johnson added.

Well retain the windows, which would have been shipped in from England, and you can still read Ruf-ford, Stoughbridge, on the original firebricks in the fireplace shipped from England, said Johnson.

Hallmark will happily make use of all four rooms upstairs, which con-sists of two larger rooms the former teachers parlour and bedroom and two boarding rooms to be converted into offices.

We have a lot of files, and peo-ple want to use our files for their research. Until now, we didnt have room for them. Now we do, John-son said.

To offer workshops and lectures in the main hall of Craigflower School-house, the society needs to raise money for folding chairs, and are hoping for 40 of them at $20 apiece.

Hallmarks calendar features an annual focus on memberships (they are nearing 200 members) at $25 each. Throughout the seasons, mem-bers host tables at farmers markets and fairs, catering to each areas history. Hallmark also sponsors the annual Heritage Awards night for the best heritage home upgrades and sponsor the student Heritage Fair at the Royal B.C. Museum in May.
