Sacagawea
Childhood
• Was born to the Chief of a Shoshoni Indian Tribe.
• At Age 12, She was kidnapped by the Hidatsa tribe.
• She was later sold to Toussaint Charbonneau as his slave and wife.
Meeting Lewis and ClarkLewis and Clark needed a translator. That is where Charbonneau and Sacagawea come in handy. Sacagawea meets Lewis and Clark for the first time not knowing that her life is going to completely change.
Her BabyOn February 11, 1805, Sacagawea gave birth to her only son. His name was Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau. She was in labor for only ten minutes.
Off to the WestThey leave for exploration with baby Jean in tow.
A Hero on The River
Which Way To Go?AS the expedition enters into a large valley they see two ways they can go. Sacagawea knows the land and tells them to go one way. It turns out that if they went another way they could have drowned because of a flood.
The Oregon CoastThey arrive at the coast with celebration. Sacagawea is honored by going with a party to salvage parts of a dead whale off the beach.
Back Home
• They travel back home to her Hidatsa-Fort Mandan village.
• She received no pay for her journey
Mysteries of Sacagawea
Theory #1:• Sacagawea returns home
and has another baby girl.• She soon after having her
second child becomes very ill and dies from her sickness.
Theory #2:• She has her second child, a
daughter.• She then leaves
Charbonneau and returns to her Shoshoni village.
• No one knows what happened to her after that, but the theory is she died of old age.
