“Fabulous singing,

staging and a gripping production”

—Charlene Kunitz, Sacramento Opera Patron

Recently, Janos Gereben, arts critic for San Francisco Classical Voice wrote, “Sacramento, famed—if rather small-townish—capital of California, is not where you’d expect world-class opera. And yet, on Sunday afternoon, this first-time visitor to Sacramento Opera had a delightful surprise by an outstanding experience thereof.” As a subscriber, we hope you too have been surprised by an outstanding experience—whether by the operas of Puccini, Verdi, or Rossini, Strauss, Jr., Mozart, or yes, even Britten.

Well, the 2008–2009 Season has been designed to provide you with not only an outstanding experience, but a truly joyous celebration of this unique art form. It will continue our commitment towards mounting productions of world-class opera, featuring emerging world-class singers, seasoned stage directors, and the acclaimed Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Sacramento Opera’s Artistic Director, Timm Rolek.

We’ll kick the season off with Arias, Overtures & Arabesques. Presented in one performance only at 2 pm on Sunday, September 21, 2008, this feast of great operatic music will showcase a broad selection of operatic gems presented by guest soloists, the Sacramento Opera Chorus, and featuring the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, and principals from the Sacramento Ballet. This is an “add-on” event and not included as part of the subscription series, however, tickets are being offered to our subscribers FIRST before the general public. Seating is first-come, first served.

The first full production of the season is a rollicking tale of pirates on the high seas, or in Penzance at least, and damsels in distress. Conceived in the high Victorian world of 1879, Gilbert and Sullivan’s ever popular comedy, The Pirates of Penzance sails into Sacramento for three performances only on November 21, 23, and 25, 2008. Noted designer, John Conklin, commented in an interview with Glimmerglass Opera, “Pirates is probably the best example of Sullivan’s incredible ability to parody operatic styles and, at the same time, tap into their emotional strengths.” Sullivan constantly shifts in musical style, from a Verdi trio to a Schubert art song, from a Rossini patter song to a Handelian anthem.

You’re invited to come take a refreshing look at this gem of the lyric theater.

On February 27, March 1 and 3, 2009, we present The Marriage of Figaro. Mozart’s most popular opera is a perpetual motion machine that sparkles with genius. There’s never a dull moment as Count Almaviva and his entourage navigate the ups and downs of preparing a wedding—or two! A miraculous marriage of music and drama in this sublime comedy of manners, as touching as it is funny. Figaro has been noted as one of the top 10 operas to see during your lifetime.

We close the season with three performances of Puccini’s timeless tale, La Boheme, on May 8, 10, and 12, 2009. A tale as contemporary today as when it was composed, La Boheme follows the story of young bohemians living in Paris, a poet, a painter, a musician and a philosopher who long for a deeper connection to society, to one another, and in the case of the poet Rodolfo, to the beautiful but frail seamstress, Mimi. This production features some the greatest arias and music in the repertoire and is not to be missed. This production takes place during Mother’s Day weekend, so buy an extra ticket for Mom.

Remember, as a full season subscriber, not only do we guarantee you the same seats from year to year, BUT, you save an impressive 20% off the single ticket price. So, SubScribe Now aNd Save!

So that we may continue to present and improve the artistic value of our product, we remain dependent on your generous financial help. Ticket prices cover only 60% of our production expense, while the balance must come from you and me. Please consider making a generous gift with your subscription order to help offset our costs and to keep subscription prices at an affordable level. Your gift will be judiciously used in our continuing effort to build an opera company of a size, scope, and stature appropriate for the Capital City of California.

Sincerely,

Rod Gideons, Executive Director
