PASTORAL REFLECTIONS T.F. Brosnan

It’s a liturgical anomaly – the ten days between the Feasts of the Ascension and the Pentecost. If Jesus promised to be with us always by sending his Spirit, then what happened in that interval between his ascent to the Father and the descent of his Spirit? Don’t be so literal, theologians are quick to assert; there is no anomaly. Jesus’ going and the Spirit’s coming are instantaneous events. We just separate them liturgically for observance sake, like moving secular holidays to Mondays so we can have three-day weekends. If the theologians are correct then we are really celebrating the same thing – the divine presence that conveys a deep understanding and a certain joie de vive that encapsulates what we call the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ presence among us has morphed form the physical to the spiritual but is essentially the same – sort of like light being both wave and particle, depending on your point of view.

I admire Noam Chomsky – not for his politics – but for his take on language. At least, for the small portion of his linguistic theories I somewhat understand (for a linguist, Chomsky can be really dense). In his most recent work, Why Only Us: Language and Evolution, Chomsky argues that human language is unique in the animal kingdom despite efforts to prove otherwise. I wouldn’t think Chomsky is a believer in God (though I do not know) and not that he ever breaches the subject; but his conclusions about human language make you wonder if Chomsky is not leaving the door open for that possibility. He reminds us of the famous research project conducted at Columbia University when researchers attempted to teach American Sign Language to that famous chimp named Nim. They progressed to a certain very limited point and could advance no farther. Nim was unable to do what every normal child can do by the age of three or four. “That was the final nail in the coffin for chimp language studies,” Chomsky says. “Chimps simply don’t do language the way people do.”

Chomsky’s noteworthy revelation is to challenge the long-accepted theory that human language evolved out of the need to communicate. He rejects the theory, asserting that language primarily evolved as an “inner mental tool.” He reverses Aristotle’s dictum: language is not primarily sound with meaning, but rather is meaning with sound – sound, like gesture, being the externalization of an inner experience. Sound is secondary; human language is primarily about silent thought, abstract concepts, making meaning. In a way, we’re all novelists seeking to express truth by creating stories with words, and stringing words together in an infinite variety of combinations on an inner landscape until we externalize those thoughts in sound, gesture or written symbol.

It’s that inner experience which I like to think happened on that first Pentecost, that Feast of Language, when everyone understood the apostles as speaking in his own language. Perhaps, then, Pentecost was essentially a silent event, when each was initially directed inward by

the power of the Spirit to experience - for lack of a better word – insight. And common insight at that.

Despite the theologians’ insistence that there is no anomaly in the Church separating the Ascension from the Pentecost, I like to think there is. It’s those ten days of emptiness, feeling abandoned, orphaned, life disrupted, happiness gone, that would enable the apostles (as well as the Blessed Mother and Jesus’ brothers) to receive that gift of insight which would bring with it understanding and courage, externalized, as the gospel writer says, as tongues of fire.

Religion can helps us in our experience of Insight, but it often becomes just the opposite – a hindrance. Carl Jung would say that religion can be the very thing that protects us from the experience of God. And Alan Watts, that Anglican priest turned Buddhist monk turned bohemian adventurer, would compare religion to a finger pointing at the moon: “one must take care not to mistake the finger for the moon,” Watts says. “Too many of us suck the pointing finger of religion for comfort, instead of looking where it points.”

Pentecost is what protects us from a religion that means to divert us from the experience of the divine, that seeks to save us from discomfort. Pentecost is wild and unruly, unordered and fiery – a check and balance to religion as a code of conduct and a blueprint for pious procedures. These ten days of anomaly are an invitation to leave the pointing finger and take a leap toward where that finger’s pointing.

[N.B. It’s that time of year once again to sign off on these Pastoral Reflections and give the patient readers of this column a well-deserved break! Until September…tfb] SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER First Reading: Acts 1:12-14 Response: Psalm 27 Second Reading: 1 Peter 4:13-16 Gospel: John 17:1-11

All who participated in the ARISE program this past year are invited to a special ARISE evening on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 7:30pm in the Church Hall. Come and celebrate two successful seasons of ARISE.

FAMILY MASS

The next Family Mass will be celebrated on

June 4th at 9:30am. This will be the last Family Mass for the school year.

At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. At Sacred Heart each month we have two special Masses for families. We celebrate Family Mass and Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW). At both liturgies the children’s readings are used. Our Parish Children’s Choir, performs at

Family Mass. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. For information, please call Mrs. Lyons, Director of Religious Education at 718-631-1307.

Family Masses will resume in the fall.

CHILDRENS’ LITURGY OF THE WORD

Our next CLOW Mass will be held on June 11th, at 9:30am this will be the final CLOW

mass for the school year.

“Sometimes, moreover, if the place itself and the nature of the community permit, it will be appropriate to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word, including a homily, with the children in a separate, but not too distant room. Then, before the Eucharistic Liturgy begins, the children are led to the place where the adults have meanwhile celebrated their own liturgy of the word.”

What is CLOW?

During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. If you have any questions regarding CLOW, please call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at 718– 224-5695.
