LENT HAS BEGUN!
On Wednesday, February 1st we began the season of
Lent. The Church teaches that Lent calls us to per-
form acts of penance, give alms, and fast & abstain.
There are two days on which we both fast & abstain.
These are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If you
have completed your 18th year and until the age of
60, the Church asks you to fast. That is, to eat one
full meal and two lighter ones, which when added
together would equal a full meal. Ordinary liquids do
not break the fast. Please check with your doctor and
priest if you have any health issues!
If you have completed your 14th year and throughout
the rest of your life, the Church asks that you abstain
on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and every Friday
during Lent. To abstain means not to eat meat. Fish,
eggs, cheese, and dairy products may be eaten.
All Catholics are required, as a minimum, to receive
the Eucharist during the Easter season; the Commu-
nicants should be in a state of grace when receiving.
2nd Collection Sunday, March 5th: Black & Indian Mission
The Black and Indian Mission Collection exists to help
diocesan communities to build the Church and preach the
Gospel of Jesus among the African American, Native
American, and Alaska Native people of God. Every year, it
is the amazing generosity of Catholic faithful just like you
who enable the Black and Indian Mission Office to sup-
port the following important priorities: Enlivening Parish
Life & Catechesis (grant funds from the Black and Indian
Mission Collection enables to support parish based cate-
chetical programs), Empowering Evangelizers (helps in
funding events for African American and Native American
ministries), Helping Educators Reach Kids (funds help in
supporting good teachers to help kids learn), and Encour-
aging Vocations (help encourage vocations to the priest-
hood and religious life in diocesan communities across the
Country.

CRS Rice Bowl is the Lenten program of
Catholic Relief Services, the official interna-
tional development and humanitarian relief

Catholic Bishops. CRS Rice Bowl helps Catholics in the
United States live out the Lenten pillars of prayer, fasting
and almsgiving in solidarity with our poorest brothers and
sisters. Seventy-five percent of CRS Rice Bowl donations
help the poor overseas, and twenty-five percent support
local hunger and poverty alleviation projects in our (arch)
diocese.
HUNGERING FOR THE JOURNEY Join our parish com-
munity—and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across
the United States—in a life-changing Lenten journey with
CRS Rice Bowl. You can pick up your family’s rice bowl
from the back of Church and return it by Easter Sunday.
