NOTES FROM THE STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL During this Holy Season when God so loved the World that HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON, the Parishioners of Sacred Heart have been generous to so many living in our Parish and our Community...the Knights and their coat drive..... Mother's Group and Women of Sacred Heart remembering children from San Juan Diego....Parishioners helping Matthew 25 disciples collecting gifts for 80 dear souls living in long-term care. Thanks to each one of you for your wonderful generosity. Remember during the Holy Days of Christmas, New Years and Epiphany that there are members of our Parish and of our Community who will eat alone, who need a ride to Mass. Parents have the opportunity to go with your children to take a hot meal to the person next door or ask a lonely person to join in your Christmas dinner. Phone a person who lives alone, check on snowy days to see if you can take him/her to the grocery or pick up medicine. Please plan to attend the Ministry retreat scheduled for Thursday, January 16th beginning at the 8:00am Mass, includes coffee, a light lunch and ends at 2:00pm. Dr. Jim Helton will be the main facilitator. All disciples of each ministry are invited....this will be an opportunity to encourage our spirits as we continue to live our Baptismal vows. Members of all ministries are invited, you will need to register so we can prepare for lunch. Please either call 215-0250 or send an email to: shccstewardshipcouncil, stating that you are going to attend. No confirmation will be sent. Dates to remember: Wed, January 9th..... 4th Anniversary of Matthew 25, Holy Mass is being offered for the members. Meeting following at 9am till 11:00am which includes a business meeting and inservice on the Emotional care and needs of the elderly and those close to death. All MEMBERS ARE URGED TO ATTEND.

SACRED HEART BULLETIN BOARD

SING JOYOUS SONGS FOR CHRISTMAS We are well into Advent as we sing “O Come Emmanuel! Bring us Hope! Bring us Joy! Bring us Peace!” We look forward to the Christ Child’s birth. Soon we will be singing of Bethlehem, of Mary and Joseph and the Holy Child who has come to be our Savior. Plan to join the Choirs of Sacred Heart on Christmas Eve as we present a musical prelude of favorite carols, lullabies, instrumentals, sing-alongs and “Joy To The World”. The Prelude will begin at 8:30 pm and will lead into our 9:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass.

SLEEPING MATS FOR THE HOMELESS

Do you know how to knit or crochet and are looking for a way to use your talent? Please consider our group that makes mats for the homeless out of shopping bags. Don’t know how to knit or crochet but still looking for a way to help less fortunate? We can use your help as well to make “plarn” a. k. a. plastic yarn. It takes about 750 shopping bags to complete an average-sized sleeping mat. We need help folding, cutting and stringing together shopping bags so those who work on knitting or crocheting can continue their work uninterrupted. We meet during the fall and winter months, every Tuesday at 10 am, in one of the classrooms, for work, some companionship and occasional coffee and sweets. Can’t make it to our meetings? There is still a way to help us and the environment at the same time. We will take your clean, used shopping bags off your hands so they won’t end up in the landfill or littering the streets. You can drop them off any day at the parish office. Want to do a little more? You can flatten and stack them up which will make the job of folding and cutting easier and faster. We all are called to do something for those in need. The homeless of our community appreciate these mats because they help battle the elements, they offer just enough to create a barrier between the ground and the body, to help retain body heat while sleeping. So, please consider joining “Mats for Homeless” in any capacity you can. We will be happy to have you. For further information, please contact Bozena Wrona at 708-543-7033

KNIGHTS IN ACTION Once again, I want to thank my Brother Knights and all the Parishioners who participated and for your generosity for purchasing a gift for children in our Adopt-a-Child Christmas party. It’s always a delight to see the happy faces of the young people in attendance. Our next Business Meeting is January 3rd 2019.

Next bingo.. Thursday, January 10th, early bird starting at 7 PM in Founders Hall. Doors open at 6:30 PM

TJK 12 DLMN OP CJQRNSTLN The 12 Days of Christmas start on Christmas Day and last until the evening of the 5th of January - also known as Twelfth Night. The 12 Days have been celebrated in Europe since before the middle ages and were a time of celebration. The 12 Days each traditionally celebrate a feast day for a saint and/or have different celebrations: Day 1 (25th December): CJQRNSTLN DLM - celebrating the Birth of Jesus. (No big surprise there…) Day 2 (26th December, also known as “Boxing Day”): The Feast of St Stephen, Deacon and Martyr. He was the first Christian martyr (you can read about it in Acts chapter 7). It's also the day when the Christmas Carol 'Good King Wenceslas' takes place.

Day 3 (27th December): The Feast of St John, Apostle and Evangelist. The only apostle NOT to die a martyr’s death. Day 4 (28th December): The Feast of the Holy Innocents, Martyrs. This feast commemorates the inno-cent victims of King Herod, when he sent soldiers to Bethlehem to kill all the baby boys that were two years and younger, in an attempt to find and kill the infant Jesus.

Day 5 (29th December): The Feast of St Thomas a’Becket, Bishop and Martyr. He was Archbishop of Canterbury in the 12th century and was murdered on 29th December 1170 for challenging the King’s authority over the Church. Day 6 (30th December): St Egwin of Worcester. [ “?”… I know… I’ve never heard of him either…] Day 7 (31st December, New Year’s Eve): Pope Sylvester I is traditionally celebrated on this day. He was one of the earliest popes (4th Century), during the time when the Arian heresy was infecting the whole Church. He was no doubt present at the Council of Nicea.. (In many central and eastern European countries -- including Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Czech

Republic, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland and Slovenia -- New Year's Eve is still sometimes called 'Silvester'.) Day 8 (1st January): 1st January - Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Day 9 (2nd January): St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory Nazianzen, Bishops and Doctors of the Church, two important 4th century Christians theologians, who vigorously fought the Arian heresy. Day 10 (3rd January): Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus. The “feast day” for our Cathedral, this day celebrates the day when Jesus was circumcised, and given the name “Jesus” as the angel had instructed. The name means, “God saves” Day 11 (4th January): St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American saint, who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the past it also celebrated the feast of Saint Simon Stylites (who lives on a small platform on the top of a pillar for 37 years!). Day 12 (5th January also known as Epiphany Eve or “Twelfth Night”): St. John Neumann who was the first Bishop in American. He lived in the 19th century.
