FROM THE DESK OF FATHER JEFF: Happy 4th of July everyone. We mourn the passing of a great parishioner and a wonderful man, Mike Kent. Mike was a lector and a member of the Finance Committee, the Pastoral Council, the fund-raising committee, and chairperson of our $10,000 raffle for the past six years. Mike even worked on the raffle last year when he wasn’t feeling well. The raffle was Mike’s idea. He knew you could sell 200 tickets at $100 each. He convinced me of it even though I had my doubts. He raised over $60,000 for the parish. Mike as a great guy. I’ll miss him. Next weekend there will be envelopes in the pews for Catholic Ministries Appeal. if you have not yet pledged you can do so now or make a donation in the second collection.

The Parish Office will be closed on Monday, July 5th, in observance of the 4th of July.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

VOLUNTEERS—TEACHERS—AIDES NEEDED! We are getting ready for another year of Religious Education in our Parish and we are looking for those of you who may feel called to help pass on the Faith to the next generation. If you love your faith and love children, God may be calling you to this ministry in the parish. Please pray about it and if you would like to serve God and your parish, please give me a call at 283-0508. Thank you—Sr. Assunta 2010-2011 Registration Parents of children who will be entering first grade in September: If your child is entering the first grade and you want him/her to receive the sacraments in the parish, it is time to register them for the Religious Education Program if they are not attending Our Lady of the Hamptons or some other Catholic School. Those who have not registered, may also stop in on those days or at any other time Monday to Thursday and drop off the forms. It is important that you register each year. Please remember that children are required to attend each year from first to eighth grades, in order to be prepared for the receiving of Confirmation in the eighth grade. Also attendance each week is a must unless the child is sick or has a good reason for missing a class. Please encourage the school and coaches not to schedule games or practices on Wednesday afternoon or evening or Sunday mornings. It is up to all of us to encourage the importance of Religious Education in our community.

Please check the website for meetings and announcements

Bulletin Reflection “The harvest is rich,” Jesus tells the seventy-two in today’s Gospel, “but the workers are few.” The situation is the same today. How can I help with God’s harvest? Am I called into the field? Am I one who could provide food or shelter or wages to those who toil in the fields of the Lord?

Living Stewardship

We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who respond to God’s call to use and share their gifts through different service organizations such as Outreach, Mental Health or Senior Services.

CELEBRATE THE WHOLE MASS

Catholics come from a legalistic attitude toward Mass. A question from the past, “How late can I come to Mass and still have it count?” reflects that older attitude. People arrive during the Introductory Rites and even throughout the readings. Since Vatican II we have been more aware of Mass as a communal celebration, as a family meal.

When we gather for Sunday Mass it is important that we reflect on what we believe about our presence. We believe that each person in the assembly is important. Each has a role to play. Each has a contribution to make for the good of the whole assembly. The Introductory Rites of our liturgy are designed to help us “come together” as a family. It takes some significant effort to do that. We should make a special effort to be in church at least in time to say “hello” to one other person before the gathering song. This will help us be better prepared to hear God speak to us. It is also a matter of good manners. If we arrive late, we distract those who are already in the pews. Concert halls will not allow people to enter after the performance has started so as not to disturb those already enjoying the show. It has to be as important to avoid disturbing those in prayer as those watching a performance. At those events we also stay until the end. It would be rude and disruptive to leave early. Our communion procedure, our announcements, our blessing and dismissal are all part of our Eucharistic celebration and prayer.

KID’S PAGE Prayers and history of the Church ______________________________ July 4, 2010 This is Independence Day, but you knew that! On this day, in the year 1776, the Declaration of Independence announced that 13 American colonies joined together to form a new nation. We are happy to be part of a country that declares the right of each person to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” we honor its history and its heroes. We do what we can to protect the beauty of the land we have inherited. Reading Psalms 146:3-9 Listen to the words of the book of Psalms: Do not put your trust in rulers, In mortals, in whom there is no help. Their breath departs, they return to the earth; On that very day their plans perish. Happy are those whose help is in the God of Jacob, Whose hope is in the Lord, their God, Who made heaven and earth, The sea, and all that is in them. The Lord keeps faith forever, Executes justice for the oppressed, Gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free; The Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down. The Lord watches over the aliens, And upholds the widow and the orphan. The Word of the Lord. Reflection: Why is religious freedom so important? Why should people who were once oppressed be careful never to oppress others?

JULY 4, 2010 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time ________________________

July 10, 2010 Celebrate water today! It covers 71% of our planet and makes the sky seem blue. It enables us to farm, fish, wash and swim. The earliest forms of life appeared in the oceans, and we are reborn in the waters of baptism. But this gift of God is endangered by chemicals pouring from farms and factories. Isn’t it amazing that we are careless of a resource on which our lives depend! Reading: John 4:8-11, 13-14 Listen to the words of the holy Gospel according to John A Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well. Jesus asked her, “Would you please give me a drink of water?” “You are a Jew,” she replied, “and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink of water when Jews and Samaritans won’t have anything to do with each other?” Jesus answered, “You don’t know what God wants to give you and you don’t know who is asking you for a drink. If you did, you would ask me for the water that gives life.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. Where are you going to get this life-giving water?” Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again. But no one who drinks the water I give will ever be thirsty again.” The Gospel of the Lord. Reflection: Why is water a good symbol for all of God’s gifts to us? How does my family try to save water?

********************************** On this day in 1882, Governor Hogg of Texas named his newborn daughter Ima. All her life, Ima was embarrassed by cruel jokes, though she was a kind person. Make a promise never to make fun of anyone’s name.

Diocese of Rockville Centre Devotion to the Sacred Heart

A first class relic of St. Margaret Mary of Alacoque will be venerated from August 16 to August 23 in our Diocese. The

schedule at this time is:

August 16 - St. Agnes in Rockville Centre August 17 - Sacred Heart Parish in Island Park August 18 - St. Aidan Parish in Williston Park August 19 - St. Ignatius Retreat House in Manhasset August 20 - Sts. Philip and James Parish in St. James August 21 - Cure’ of Ars Parish in Merrick August 22 - Shrine of Our Lady of the Island in Manorville August 23 - St. Rosalie in Hampton Bays

The time frame for each parish and Retreat Center is from 1 PM to 8 PM. St. Ignatius Retreat House will close their day with a Healing Mass. The Parishes will fit the exposition into their Mass Schedule for the day. The

Knights of Columbus will set up an Honor Guard at each site.

The Bishop has asked the prayer groups to spend time in prayer, penance and petition to the Sacred Heart for an outpouring of Love, Healing and Grace in the hearts of everyone in the Diocese for the weeks prior to the

arrival of the relic. He is also encouraging the prayer groups to spend eight months in prayer after the arrival of the relic, focusing

on Pope John Paul II’s Model for Evangelization of fallen-away Catholics. The themes for the months of prayer are:

September—A call to Holiness October—A Call to Prayer

November—Devotion to the Eucharist December—Devotion to the Sacrament of Reconciliation

January—Openness to the Movement of the Holy Spirit in Their Lives February—Meditation/Contemplation—Listening in Prayer

March—Openness to the Use of Technology in Spreading the Good News April—The Role of the Laity in Evangelization

May—Thanksgiving for the Healing Received for Devotion to the Sacred Heart

We hope all prayer groups will participate in this year of prayer. We pray that all prayer groups will evangelize their parishes to develop prayerful activities as well!
