BOTSWANA A land of staggering beauty

Once upon a time a river took a journey and lost its way in the desert. Instead of drowning in despair, it luxuriated in its solitude, spread its liquid resource into a delta and created nature’s greatest kaleidoscope. It became known by the mokoro boatmen as Okavango. It became known by conservationists as the jewel of the Kalahari.

The Okavango, however, is only one facet of the wilderness we parcel up for you. For the optimum wildlife experience, we annex the other great game viewing areas: the dry lands of the Okavango in the Moremi; Chobe National Park including Savute - the kingdom of the lion; the endless stretches of the wild Kalahari and Makgadikgadi; the big tusker country of the Tuli.

This is a country of adventure, challenge and discovery: mokoro trails up secret waterways; overnight camping on islands and highlands; fighting the mighty Tiger Fish; surveying the vastnessfrom elephant and horse back; admiring the abundant bird and wildlife; discovery of weird and wonderful plant and tree species on bush walks; sampling the Okavango bream, the sweetest edible fish of the realm. Most of all, it’s a unique experience just being there . . .

We have been tailor making Botswana safaris for over 30 years. Our extensive knowledge and experience has resulted in a comprehensive offering ranging from mobile safaris to tailor made fly-ins and special interest adventures.

Our close association with Air Botswana, working directly with the internal charter companies, logistical experience and product knowledge, affords us the flexibility to link lodges from different operators, ensuring innovative itineraries based on clients preferences.

Our approach to customising safaris is to give clients an intense experience of the areas visited. This means concentrating on the highlights. In Botswana there are 4 wildlife and wilderness highlight experiences. A stay in a water camp to explore the wetlands of the famed Okavango Delta by motorised craftor mokoro (dug out canoe). A stay in a dual or land camp to view a great variety of game and birdlife froman open safari vehicle. A venture into the Chobe area including Savute, a harsh land where the battle for survival is desperate and prides of African lion are dominant. On a mobile safari tracking migratory herds of game through the endless vistas of the wild Kalahari.

In addition, some of our special interest safaris will take you to lesser-known areas and add a special touch to your Botswana sojourn. We represent all accommodation establishments in Botswana, from hotels suitable for groups to luxury tented camps and lodges and old-style rustic safari camps. The emphasis is on personal service, comfort, convenience and good food, all within the spirit of wilderness life.

With a population of about 1.7 million people and covering almost 582 000 square kilometres, Botswana is one of the most sparsely populated countries in Africa. Having scarcely been developed under a British colonial administration between 1885 and 1966, the discovery of diamonds, a year after independence, has allowed Botswana to develop rapidly.

With the exception of the eastern part of the country, which receives slightly higher summer rainfall and hence is the most densely populated region, most of Botswana is technically desert. This makes the Okavango Delta, situated in the north-west of the country, particularly unique.

Introduction ~ Botswana ~ 5

The Moremi Wildlife Reserve occupies a large portion of the Okavango Delta. It contains diverse habitat, ranging from permanent swamp to floodplains, islands and large areas of dry land including Chiefs Island and the ‘Mopane Tongue’ of dry scrub and Kalahari sands, which results in prolific bird and animal life.

The Chobe National Park in the north of Botswana is noted for the superb game viewing year round along the river front and famous for the heaviest concentrations of elephant anywhere in Africa today.

The Kwando, Selinda and Linyanti areas do not perhaps symbolise Botswana in the same way that the Okavango and Chobe do, yet tucked along the border with Namibia’s Caprivi Strip these areas remain Africa in its most untouched form. Those who have visited the area speak of it with reverence and awe.

The complex of salt pans found in eastern Botswana is a striking feature; they are some of the largest in the world. The Makgadikgadi Pans cover nearly 12 000 square kilometres. The remains of an ancient super lake rich in archaeological evidence undergoes a radical transformation in the rainy summer months from a landscape offering nothing but sand, salt and sky to one teeming with tens of thousands of migrating zebra and wildebeest and countless water and wading birds.

More than 17% of Botswana is set aside for national parks and a further 15% is devoted to private reserves; game is prolific both inside and outside the boundaries thereof. More than 160 species of mammals and nearly 600 species of birds can be found. With its pristine wilderness and policy of exclusivity, Botswana provides an authentic safari experience for the discerning traveller.

Tourist informationHow to get thereMajor international airlines fly into Gaborone, Botswana’s capital. Daily flights from Johannesburg are available on Air Botswana to Maun and regular charter flights into Kasane and the Tuli area ensure easy access into the tourist areas. A number of private charter companies provide light aircraft internal flights throughout the country. Although Botswana

has a good system of roads from neighbouring countries, the distances involved result in most visitors preferring to fly.

Health and entry requirementsRecommended vaccinations include Hepatitas A and Tetanus. Anti-malaria tablets are advisable year-round. No compulsory vaccinations are required at this time. A valid passport is required and visas are required by some nationalities. We recommend clients check requirements with visa authorities well in advance.

ClimateAlthough it straddles the Tropic of Capricorn, Botswana experiences extremes in both temperature and weather. In the winter, late May through to August, days are normally clear, warm and sunny, and nights are cool to cold. Wildlife never wanders far from water sources, so sightings are more predictable than in the wetter summer season. In summer (October to April), wildlife is harder to spot and rains can render sandy roads impassable. This is also the time of the highest humidity and the most stifling heat; daytime temperatures of over 40°C are common. Light weight tropical clothing with rainwear is recommended from November to March.

CurrencyBotswana currency is the Pula. The South African Rand, US Dollars, Euros, Pounds and most major credit cards will be accepted at most lodges, camps and restaurants.

OKAVANGO A labyrinth of islands, secret lagoons and hidden water channels

The Okavango Delta is perhaps the most popular attraction in Botswana. The breathtaking wildlife refuge, variety of plant life, and option to take a guided Botswana safari attracts travelers from all over the world. The area is easily reached through the town of Maun, which is called the Gateway to the Delta. Air Botswana, the government airline, runs daily flights to the area from the major hubs around the country. There are various lodges and safari camps scattered around the Okavango for those wishing to be immersed in the nature and beauty the delta has to offer. But keep in mind potential costs before you book your safari in Okavango—some prices can be high as the government of Botswana is attempting to keep the number of tourists low to ensure the delta remains as unspoiled as possible.

The unspoiled Okavango Delta is located in the northeast region of Botswana, where the Okavango River meets the Kalahari Desert. Sometimes referred to as the Okavango Swamp, this refuge is anything but. It is one of the world’s largest inland water systems as the headwaters to the delta start flowing from Angola, continue down through Namibia, and finally reach Botswana. It floods each year during the rainy season, and the delta can almost double in size, making the area resemble a small lake. The best time to book your Botswana safari for watching wildlife in the Okavango Delta is during the dry season, which goes roughly from May through October. If you are looking to go bird-watching and explore the vegetation, the best time of season to go is between November and April, when the rains bring out the best of the many varieties of flora.

The Okavango Delta is famous for its huge wildlife

population. It is home to some rare species such as wattled cranes and red lechwe, and in addition to these unusual finds, visitors can view more than 400 types of birds, hyenas, zebras, hippos, antelope, monkeys, elephants, and crocodiles. The lush vegetation and clean water attract these animals and provide them with a perfect environment. The Okavango Delta is also home to native African tribes, and there are five ethnic groups that make their home in this rich landscape: the Hambukushu, Dceriku, Wayeyi, Bugakhwe, and Ilanikwe. These peoples have inhabited the area for hundreds of years and still engage in traditional economies, such as agriculture, fishing, and hunting.

ZIMBABWE Land of awe inspiring wonder

Zimbabwe is situated in Southern Africa on the northern border of South Africa and borders Mozambique, Zambia and Botswana. For a small land locked country Zimbabwe has plenty to offer, from the huge boulders of the Matobo Hills, to rolling hills of the Eastern Highlands, and large game parks full of all types of wildlife, not forgetting Victoria Falls – one of the Seven Wonders of the World – Zimbabwe has it all!

Zimbabwe is derived from the Shona words ‘zimba ramabwe’ meaning ‘big house of stone’ and The Great Zimbabwe monument remains a dominant reminder of such structures. Zimbabwe offers a wide variety of travel and holiday opportunities; we can tailor make tours and safaris throughout this region. A popular ‘add on’ from its neighbouring countries, Victoria Falls remains a tourist’s haven, attracting thousands of visitors each year looking to experience the diverse variety of wildlife, scenic and adventure activities. Twice as high and one and a half times as wide as Niagara, Victoria Falls is divided into five separate falls, the Devils Cataract, Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls and the Eastern Cataract, ranging in height from 60 to 110m. The peak flow is usually around mid April when the spray can rise 450m into the air - hence the name ‘Mosi-oa-

Tunya’ - the smoke that thunders.

Zimbabwe’s national parks and private wildlife ranches are known for their miombo woodlands and thorny acacia or kopje-studded landscapes, offer great opportunities for wildlife viewing and bird-watching. Animals including antelopes, zebras and giraffes roam the plains and there’s a good chance of seeing at least a few of the Big Five (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino). You can spot wildlife from a vehicle, on foot, on horseback, or even on the back of an elephant.

The Zambezi Valley stretches from Victoria Falls in the east, and then flows into Lake Kariba from there it goes into the Middle Zambezi which is famous for its fishing, especially tiger, and wildlife.

Wildlife such as hippo, buffalo, crocodiles, rhino, elephant and lion roam the Zambezi Valley. Mana Pools is a well known park where there is a wide variety of game, and game walks and drives are very popular in this park. Canoe safaris are one of the best in Southern Africa, and are the ideal way to get up close to the animals and nature.

There are many camps along the banks of the Zambezi River which give you the ideal opportunity to catch tiger fish whilst viewing game as well.

Lake Kariba is a vast man made lake stretching for over 5000 square kilometres. It is a very popular tourist destination in Zimbabwe, every year in October there is a tiger fish tournament held which attracts many fisherman to the lake. Houseboats are a popular way of seeing the lake, and are the ideal way to relax; fish, view game and birds and enjoy the peaceful and serene surroundings of the bush. Not to mention the breathtaking sunsets over the lake.

The majestic Victoria Falls, are found on the Zambezi River, between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Victoria Falls is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and was discovered by David Livingstone in 1855. Tourists walk in the beautiful rain forest and look at the scenic view points of the falls. During the months of November to April (rainy season), you will get particularly wet and the sound of the falls will be almost deafening. Other attractions are bungee jumping off the Victoria Falls Bridge (111m high) and dive into the Zambezi River gorge, or white water rafting below the Falls in the rapids of the Zambezi River.

ZAMBIA Land of beauty & splendour

Zambia is often described as the ‘real Africa’ and it is easy to see why. The country is famed for its huge protected wilderness areas and the South Luangwa and Kafue National Parks are home to arguably the most diverse range of game in Africa. With Africa’s wildlife areas rapidly disappearing, Zambia remains the least disturbed and commercialised and is still blessed with lush vegetation, abundant water and a firm commitment to preserve her vast tracts of African wilderness, spread over 19 national parks and 33 game management areas.

A safari in Zambia is a legendary wildlife experience and offers game drives in open vehicles, walking safaris through pristine bush, or canoeing safaris down the Zambezi. Some of the most knowledgeable wildlife experts in the world run the safari operations in Zambia.

This, together with vigorous standards of training for guides, rangers and trackers ensures wildlife enthusiasts are provided with an indepth and entertaining exploration of the African bush. The warm welcome of the Zambian people and culture provide an added dimension to an unforgettable experience. We believe that like Botswana, Zambia is best suited to tailor made tours and safaris. There

are a multitude of safaris, accommodation choices and activities available. Our specialised consultants will tailor make the ideal Zambian adventure based on client interest, budget and time frames available, ensuring each safari epitomises the spirit of this ‘real Africa’.

Zambia gained its independence in 1964 under Dr. Kenneth Kaunda and became a Commonwealth republic. In 1972 the country was declared a one party state but reverted to multi party politics in December 1990. The basis of Zambia’s economy is the mining of copper and cobalt, which together provide more than 90% of the country’s foreign exchange earnings. Extensive efforts are being made to diversify its economic base with agriculture, manufacturing and international tourism becoming increasingly important, and the country remains one of Africa’s most prosperous and stable nations.

Starting life as a simple railway halt in 1905, Lusaka has been Zambia’s capital since 1935 and today is one of the fastest growing cities in central Africa. Of special interest are the stunning Munda Wanga Botanical Gardens and adjoining zoo, the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross, the Zambian Gemstone and Polishing Works (producing fine jewellery from

precious and semi-precious stones) and the bustling Luburma Market.

Prior to 1935, Livingstone was the capital of what was then called Northern Rhodesia and is situated about 10 km from the magnificent Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River. The Livingstone Museum is the country’s national museum, tracing the history of man in Zambia, and has a particularly good collection of memorabilia relating to the explorer/missionary Dr. David Livingstone. The Victoria Falls Field Museum stands on an archaeological site and displays stone tools from some 2.5 million years ago. The Railway Museum traces the history of rail transport in Zambia and has a collection of locomotives and rolling stock dating back to the early 1900’s.

The Maramba Cultural Village just outside Livingstone provides an interesting look at Zambian culture and the Hukini Village on the road to the gorges of Victoria Falls gives interesting demonstrations of crafts and carvings. The Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to some of Zambia’s remaining rhino. A wide variety of adventure activities including white water rafting, kayaking, canoeing, microlighting and river cruises are available from all Livingstone based hotels and lodges.

Covering 22 500 km2, the Kafue National Park is bordered by the Kafue River and stretches from the vast Busanga Plains in the north to the miombo woodlands of Nanzhila in the south. A profusion of game including elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, hyena, buffalo, Roan, Sable and a wide variety of other antelope can be sighted regularly and the bird life is extensive and rich in variety. A short distance downstream from Lake Kariba is the Zambezi Valley and the Lower Zambezi National Park, fringed by rugged escarpment and a veritable wildlife menagerie. Attracted by lush floodplains, verdant woodlands and permanent water, elephants, buffalo and antelope move in big herds. Lion, leopard, wild dog and hyena maintain checks and balances. A river alive with fish and a land of habitat diversity has resulted in a bewildering range of bird species.

Just three hours drive from Lusaka is the World Heritage Wetlands site of the Lochinvar National Park. Although not abundant in larger mammals, Lochinvar is regarded as one of the best birding hot spots in sub-Saharan Africa, with over 428 recorded species. The park is situated on the southern edge of the Kafue Flats and is particularly well known for the large herds of Kafue lechwe, Blue wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, Greater kudu, bushbuck, Oribi, hippo, reedbuck, waterbuck and the elusive Sitatunga.

The Luangwa Valley stretches the length of eastern Zambia and represents the southern end of the Great African Rift valley system. Framed by craggy escarpments and sustained by the dynamic Luangwa River, the valley is home to the North and South Luangwa National Parks.

Tourist informationHow to get thereInternational flights serve Lusaka and Livingstone and internal scheduled charter flights transport guests from lodge to lodge. Although the road system is much improved over recent years, the distances involved result in most visitors preferring to fly.

We recommend light tropical clothing with subdued colours for safaris and casual attire for evenings. It is advisable to wear long sleeves and trousers in the evenings to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.

CurrencyThe unit of currency is the Kwacha. US Dollars and credit cards are generally widely accepted and most hotels, restaurants, travel agencies and the bigger shops will take credit cards. Majority of the bigger banks will advance local currency against a credit card.

MOZAMBIQUE Land of smiles

Mozambique is one of Africa’s up-and-coming hot-spots, with stunning beaches, excellent diving and magical offshore islands. Go snorkeling around the Bazaruto Archipelago, sail on a dhow through mangrove channels or laze under the palms in the Quirimbas Archipelago, take an off-beat safari in the wilds of Gorongosa National Park, wander along cobbled streets past stately colonial-era buildings on Ilha de Moçambique, sip a café espresso at one of Maputo’s lively sidewalk cafés, watch the silversmiths at work on Ibo Island or dance to the country’s trademark marrabenta music.

If you’re inclined to something tamer, stick to Southern Mozambique, where roads and transport links (especially with neighbouring South Africa) are good and accommodation options abound varying from camping, self-catering, bed & breakfast to fully catered exclusive lodge and hotel accommodation. For more adventure, head across the Zambezi into the wilds of Northern Mozambique, one of Africa’s last frontiers. Getting around here takes time, but the paradisiacal coastal panoramas and sense of space, the sheer adventure of travelling some of

the continent’s most idyllic island lodges make the journey well worthwhile.

NAMIBIA Land of contrast

Namibia is situated on the southwestern coast of Africa, bordering Angola and Zambia in the north, South Africa in the south and Botswana in the east. With an estimated population of 2.2 million, Namibia’s population density is one of the lowest in the world.

Namibia has four different landscapes with their own characteristics and attractions. The most definitive is the Namib, a long coastal desert that runs the length of the country and is highlighted with migrating dune belts, dry riverbeds and canyons. The central plateau is home to the majority of Namibia’s towns and villages and is divided between rugged mountain ranges and sand-filled valleys. Next is the vast Kalahari Desert with its ancient red sand and sparse vegetation. Lastly, Kavango and Caprivi, blessed with generous amounts of rain and typified by tropical forests, perennial rivers and woodland savannas.

In Etosha National Park you will find huge herds of springbok, gemsbok, zebra, and Blue wildebeest, as well as smaller numbers of Red hartebeest, Mountain zebra, lion, cheetah and the elusive leopard gather at waterholes spotted easily against the stark white background immense salt pans. Waterberg Plateau was proclaimed to nurture the small numbers of

endangered animals – different species of antelope, buffalo, white rhino and many more. Cape Cross on the Skeleton Coast represents one of the largest seal reserves in the world. These three parks represent the most popular wildlife attractions in Namibia, but others dot the entire country.

Tourist informationHow to get thereVisitors enter Namibia at Hosea Kutako International Airport located 45km east of Windhoek. International flights arrive multiple times throughout the week from Johannesburg and Frankfurt via a number of carriers. Namibia has an extensive network of roads from tarmac highways to a well maintained infrastructure of gravel roads, making travel by road simple and viable. Tours and lodges are also linked internally by scheduled or charter flights.

Health and entry requirementsThere are no mandatory vaccinations for travellers from Europe. If you arrive from a country where yellow fever vaccinations are mandatory, proof of immunisation is required. It is recommended to take anti-malaria prophylatics. Visitors need to be in the possession of a passport that is valid for at least six months after date of entry, and visas are required by

some nationalities.

ClimatePartially covered by the Namib, one of the world’s driest deserts, Namibia’s climate is generally very dry and pleasant. The cold Benguela current keeps the coast cool, damp and free of rain for most of the year. Inland, all the rain falls in summer (November to April). January and February are hot, when daytime temperatures in the interior can exceed 40ºC (104ºF), but nights are usually cool. Winter nights can be fairly cold, but days are generally warm and comfortable.

CurrencyThe Namibia Dollar (N$) equals the South African Rand (ZAR) 1:1. The South African Rand is a legal tender in Namibia and is accepted as payment for purchasing goods and services. Major international credit cards can be used and many of the hotels exchange foreign currency.

Time zones Summer time: GMT + 2 hours from the 1st Sunday in September to the 1st Sunday in April.Winter time: GMT + 1 hour from the 1st Sunday in April to the 1st Sunday in September.

Sense of AfricaSense of Africa owns and operates its own fleet of vehicles that range from the luxury Land Rover Discovery and 7-seater microbuses to custom-built 22 to 44-seater coaches. All custom-built coaches are designed to suit the Namibian road conditions, both in their configuration as well as their construction. Due to the road conditions, more sturdy truck chassis with front diesel engines are used. Although slightly more noisy due to the position of the engine, this ensures that the vehicles are not affected by dust and particles thrown up on gravel roads, and are therefore substantially more reliable. As the standard fibreglass bodies in new bus construction would not last on the roads, and due to the problems of body fatigue occasioned by continuous travel on gravel roads, the buses have a metal body constructed over the chassis in line with their own design. Vehicle height, large sliding windows and reclining seats ensure that guests enjoy the best possible view and photographic opportunities, but can also enjoy a comfortable rest when travelling longer distances. For the guests’ convenience, all vehicles are fitted with air-conditioning and an intercom system.

Sense of Africa operates its own in-house fully equipped workshop. The workshop consists of a 400m2 garage with a pit, special oil divider drains and a wash bay with high pressure cleaners. Two qualified diesel mechanics, assisted by 4 mechanics ensure that all vehicles are meticulously maintained and serviced. Maintenance is done on a preventative, rather than reparative basis. Owning and servicing their own fleet enables Sense of Africa to set the standard it requires of the vehicles it uses. The workshop is also always available on standby on a 24 hour emergency basis.

MissionSense of Africa’s purpose is to provide the ultimate in quality travel services in Namibia that exceed customers’ expectations. To make a difference by being innovative leaders in destination management, provide people with the opportunity to live out their passion, realise guests’ dreams by delivery of real quality experiences, stimulate sustainable economic activity, be an attractive and passionate business, generate progress through partnerships and practice honesty and integrity in all.

EAST AFRICA Land of the classic safari and luxurious lodges

Tourist informationHow to get thereThe main ports of entry are Nairobi, Mombasa and Dar es Salaam. Towns and lodges are linked internally by scheduled or charter flights and roads. Health and entry requirementsYellow fever inoculations are compulsory. Protection against malaria, Hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus and polio is recommended. Vaccination, inoculation and medical certificates or receipts should be carried on the visitor at all times. All inoculations should be done 4 to 6 weeks before the trip. Visitors on special medication must carry ample supplies at all times. It is also advisable to carry wrist tags, physician’s instructions and address, and prescription details for emergencies. Visas are required for all East African countries; we recommend clients obtain current visa information directly from appropriate consulates.

Climate Wet months in East Africa are April, May, November and December. In Rwanda and Uganda it may rain throughout the year. Wet seasons are excellent for birding. Dry and warm months are January to March, August to October. These months are superb for game. Dry and cool months with clear skies and

lots of greenery are June and July. Temperatures fall dramatically during the night.

CurrencyThe currency in Kenya is the Kenyan Shilling (KES) and in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). It is best to carry more traveller’s cheques than cash in UK pounds, US dollars or Euros. Cheques or cash can be converted to local notes at the airport, hotels or banks. It is advisable to carry smaller denominations of cash for the purposes of gratuities.

Time zone Kenya UT +0 hours. Three hours ahead of GMT and has a single time zone.Tanzania UT +3 hours.

Kenya introductionKenya is, without doubt, a stunningly beautiful country. From the bleached sands of the eastern coast lapped by the aquamarine waters of the Indian Ocean, to the primitive aridity of little-visited Turkana, Kenya offers a wonderful variety of landscape, a people that are utterly charming and friendly, a rich and fascinating culture and, of course, fabulous wildlife. The Masai Mara, Kenya’s most popular game reserve, offers fantastic all-

year-round game viewing. In addition, the Mara shares the migration with the Serengeti. Almost two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle start from the southern Serengeti in May, arriving in the Masai Mara from late June. Tanzania introductionTanzania is famous for being one of the best wildlife destinations in the world. Bordered on the east by the lovely shores of the Indian Ocean, the western boundary is Lake Tanganyika, Africa’s longest and deepest lake. The biggest and best feature, Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, lies on its border with Kenya. What is more, the Selous, Tanzania’s unspoilt and little visited wilderness, is the largest game reserve in Africa. The game viewing in Tanzania is quite outstanding. Antelope, zebra and wildebeest are found in astonishing abundance. In consequence their attendant predators, lion and cheetah, leopard and Hyena are also numerous. The country’s rivers and lakes contain high populations of hippo and crocodile, lakes such as Lake Manyara are often tinged pink with hundreds of flamingos, and high concentrations of elephant and giraffe are found. Great wildernesses such as the Ruaha National Park, the Selous and Katavi attract a fantastic variety of animals and birds.

Introduction ~ East Africa ~ 55

The Ngorongoro Crater is yet another of Tanzania’s natural wonders, 25 Million years ago the volcano collapsed to form a ‘caldera’, with sides over five hundred metres high and a base of about 20km wide. This natural arena for wildlife is stunning when viewed from above, but possibly even more amazing from the crater floor. Here you will find thousands of wildebeest, gazelle, zebra, the prides of lion that prey on them, rhino, elephant and buffalo.

Lemala Luxury CampsExceptional seasonal Hemingway-style camps in prime locations in Ngorongoro and Serengeti, Tarangire and Manyara National Parks, each with 9 luxury tents (including 1 family tent). Ngorongoro Lemala is located on the rim of the crater in a delightful acacia forest adjacent to the Lemala entry route. Guests avoid queues and traffic jams during the crater safari and can enhance their experience by selecting an optional crater lunch, exclusive breakfast with the Masai or a nature walk. All tents are heated and have wooden flooring, flush toilets and 24-hr solar lighting. This is the finest tented camp on the crater.

Lemala Ndutu and Lemala Mara follow the wildebeest migration. From December to March, the luxury camp is located on a beautiful site with mature trees overlooking the Ndutu marsh. The marsh attracts plenty of plains game and consequently leopard, cheetah, lion, hyena, elephant, buffalo and giraffe are often seen near the camp.

Lemala Ndutu is also the best place to see the wildebeest calving in February. From June to October, the camp is based in the northern Serengeti near to the Mara River. Here guests can enjoy 4x4 game drives in open vehicles in a vast area as large as the Masai Mara but with significantly fewer numbers of visitors. Wildebeest river crossings, abundant predators, large herds of plains game and captivating landscapes make this remote part of Serengeti one of the greatest wilderness areas of Africa.

Lemala Tarangire operates from June through to October and moves to Lake Manyara National Park from December to March.

Kigio Wildlife Camp & Malewa Wildlife LodgeTwo superb eco-lodges along the Malewa River in the private Kigio Wildlife Conservancy in the heart of the Great Rift Valley near Lake Nakuru in Kenya. Guests enjoy an intimate African experience through nature walks, 4x4 day or night game drives, visiting local communities and lectures on environment and conservation.
