And in those urgent minutes af ter the alarm sounds, unintended damage can happen to vehicles, equipment and personnel as everyone races to get out the door. In an emergency, every second counts, and firefighters do everything they can to get out the door as quickly as possible. While this sense of urgency is important to the community, it also means first responders may rush the apparatus out of the station, often exiting the firehouse before the automatic door is completely open. This can mean costly damages to the door, the apparatus, and sometimes injuries to personnel. Not only are these unplanned costs extensive, factoring in the size of the doors and equipment used, but they also mean a department has to take equipment offline for a period of time in order for repairs to get done. The Oak Brook Fire Department understood this issue and sought out LiftMaster’s help to prevent facing that situation.
PROBLEM
LiftMaster’s Emergency Response Solutions line consists of a variety of products and technologies designed to address the specific challenges facing firehouses and provide a fully integrated solution. For instance, the Light Curtain (LC-36A) forms an invisible zone of coverage with 22 infrared cross-beams across the plane of the door to detect people, property and equipment. When any of the cross-beams are broken the door operator stops and reverses the door to prevent contact and/or injury. Paired with primary photo eyes, the door will have an additional 36 inches of vertical coverage, optimal for detecting vehicle bumpers, fire apparatus ladders and hi-lift work buckets.
LiftMaster ® helped the Oak Brook Fire Department take their coverage a step further by also integrating a Red/Green Traffic Light into their system package. The light illuminates green when the door is fully open, alerting firefighters when it is officially clear/safe to exit the station. The LiftMaster Emergency Response offering includes additional accessories, such as pneumatic treadle kit and motion detector, that supplement the primary safety devices installed around the door – ensuring damaged equipment is a thing of the past.
