SAFER is basically a robot designed to detect,find and extinguish a fire in a normal houseenvironment.
It employs GSM technology to notify the residentof house of the fire.
It uses Infra red sensors to navigate around thefloor plan, flame detection sensors to detect andpin point the fire and carbon dioxide gas to putout the fire.

The need for a device that can detect and extinguisha fire on its own is long past due. Many house firesoriginate when someone is either sleeping or not athome. With the invention of such a device, peopleand property can be saved at a much higher rate withrelatively minimal damage caused by the fire.
Our task as Electronic and Computer Engineers is todesign and build a prototype system that couldprecisely detect a fire, notify the person in charge viaGSM (SMS) and activate the robot to initiate the fireextinguishing process.

MAIN OBJECTIVE
To design and build a semi autonomous fire
extinguishing robot (SAFER)

To employ microntrollers to integrate anddevelop controls for the prototype system.
To use GSM technology (SMS command) to notifythe person in charge via a preset ID at the sametime starting the robot.
To use the robot to detect and extinguish a fire ina pre-designed environment.

SAFER seeks to provide a way in which fires can beextinguished in the shortest time possible and alsosending a signal from a GSM module to inform theowner of the house of a fire breakout.
SAFER eliminates delays and overdependence onthe fire department which is very prone in adeveloping country like Kenya.
This project is also in line with Vision 2030 whichseeks to intensify innovation in priority sectorsparticularly in the industries which are a key playerin Kenya achieving a mid level economy by 2030.

Rechargeable (Ni-MH) batteries to supplypower to the motors as well as run themicrocontroller and sensors.
The reasons for this selection are:

The motors to be used are the brushed DCmotors. The reasons behind this are:
Low initial cost
High reliability
Simple control of motor speed
Cheap drive design
Easy torque control

Embedded microprocessors are used for allindustrial robots
They perform the required function and also enableinterfacing of the various kinds of sensors, toolingdevices e.t.c.

We intend to use the Arduino Duemilanove. Thechoice was based on the following reasons:

Cross platform
Simple and clear programming language
