Missions and activities

The IFA being an Institute of the German Social Accident Insurance is conducting research for the prevention of occupational accidents, occupational diseases, and work-related health risks. The IFA supports the German social accident insurers especially in the field of scientific and technical issues by means of

• Research, development and investigation• Testing of products and analyses of substance samples• Workplace measurement and consultancy• Participation in standardisation and legislation• Provision of specialist information and expert

knowledge

The foci of the institute‘s activities are

• Chemical and biological hazards• Toxikology• Physical hazards as noise, vibration and radiation• Ergonomics• Epidemiology• Accident prevention/Product safety• Personal protective equipment

Furthermore, the IFA is notified as testing and certifica-tion body for a number of test fields. It serves as a noti-fied body for the testing and certification of poducts and quality management systems for manufacturers.

The IFA is held to inform the public of its working results by all appropriate means. It is supposed to act as a con-sulting body for national and international authorities, for the social accident insurance institutions as well as for the insured persons and companies. IFA experts are in volved in all relevant work safety committees. In all respects, the IFA is co-operating closely with the social accident insurers and their institutions.
