FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS

• Instructions may be verbal.

• Instructions may be written.

Never Work Alone

• No student may work in the classroom without an instructor present.

Do not touch!

• Do not handle the equipment until the instructor has advised you to do so.

Perform authorized experiments only.

KEEP YOUR WORK AREA CLEAR

• Keep personal items not needed for an experiment away from the lab area.

• Keep aisles free of all obstructions.

KNOW YOUR SAFETY EQUIPMENT

• Goggles - for eye protection

• Eyewash station - for flushing of the eyes

• Fire blanket - for smothering clothing fires

• Fire extinguisher - for fires NOT on a person

Fire Drill Procedures• Turn power off. Extinguish flames.• Line up along the wall beneath the

clock. • Exit the building and walk across

the grass to the sidewalk. • Room 200 is the SECOND line.

ACT IN A RESPONSIBLE

MANNER AT ALL TIMES

• The laboratory is a work place.

• The laboratory is not a playroom.

• Horseplay will not be tolerated.

Chemical Waste

• Some liquids may be put down the drain in the front of the room.

• Never pour chemicals in the student sink.

• Solid waste is disposed of in separate waste containers.

If you use a chemical…

• Remember to keep your hands away from your face and wash your hands after use.

Storage

• Keep the storage areas closed at all times.

Medical Conditions

• Asthma• Allergies

Living Organisms

• Remember: They are ALIVE and they are NOT classroom toys.

• This includes the plants, fish, turtles, lizards, and other living things that may be used in our classroom.

WEAR YOUR SAFETY GOGGLES

• for laboratory activities involving ANY potential danger to the eyes

• for laboratory activities involving glass

• for laboratory activities involving heating of materials

WEAR APPROPRIATE CLOTHING

• Loose fitting clothing or jewelry can get damaged by equipment, chemicals, or heating devices.

• Clothing damage may lead to bodily injury.

• Wear aprons to protect clothing when appropriate.

SPECIAL HAIR INSTRUCTIONS

• Tie back long hair when using heat, or equipment with gears or spinning parts.

• Hair preparations such as hairspray, gels, and mousse are often very flammable. Their use in a lab situation is discouraged.

REPORT ACCIDENTS AND

CLEAN UP ALL SPILLS

• Calmly tell your teacher what happened.

• Clean up minor spills with paper towels.

• Clean up a solid spill with a broom and dustpan and dispose of it where indicated by your teacher.

IMMEDIATE DANGERS IN THE

LAB• Fires• Irritations to the eyes or skin• Burns to the skin• Poisoning

BROKEN GLASSWARE

• Teacher must clean up broken glass.

• Never use chipped or damaged glassware.

• Inform the teacher of the break and get a replacement.

SPECIAL ELECTRICAL HAZARDS

• The biggest electrical hazard in laboratory situations is electrical shock.

• The human body is a good conductor of electricity.

• Report damaged equipment.

Heating

• Keep hair away!• Watch sleeves!• Avoid touching heated materials.• DO NOT BURN ANY

UNAUTHORIZED OBJECT!

Be Attentive

• Do not leave any active heating tools unattended, EVER!

• Never look directly into a test tube or beaker that is being heated.

• Never aim an open beaker or test tube that is being heated at a person.

Heated Materials

• Glass remains very hot for a very long time.

• Do not immerse hot glass into water.

• Always use safety materials and precautions when working with heated glass or other substances.
