Souper Bowl 2014
Human slavery – also known as human trafficking is
still happening today!
An estimated 21 million people, including children as
young as age five, are trafficked for commercial sex
or forced labor across our world today.
Large sporting events, such as the Super Bowl, are
known to provide a lucrative market for human
traffickers. During the days leading up to the Super
Bowl event, Federal, State, and Local Law
Enforcement Authorities will conduct surveillance
operations in an attempt to prevent human
traffickers from conducting their “business.”
Faith communities and many civil society groups
have been active educating hotel staff and the wider
public about human trafficking. It is our hope and
prayer that Super Bowl XLVIII will be a Big Win in
our nation’s efforts to end Human Trafficking.

January 26, 2014 Dear Parishioners,
“As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw
two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they
were fishermen. He said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left
their nets and followed him. He walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of
Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father mending their nets. He called
them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him.” The Super Bowl is almost upon us and will be played almost
in our backyards this year! Although our local teams will not be
participating, the best teams from the NFC and AFC are to
match up to determine who the best team of the year is. No
expense was spared recruiting, training, keeping healthy,
preparing mentally, purchasing equipment, etc. for all the
members of the team – players and staff personnel. Many
worked very hard, sometimes for years or decades to become
part of a Super Bowl organization. They were handpicked to
hopefully become the best of the best. Out of the thousands of
people involved in all the NFL teams, only one team, one group
of people will become Super Bowl champions.
Jesus, who is the ultimate Super Bowl Coach, had a little
different approach to selecting his Super Bowl team. In this
Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus invites four fishermen; Peter,
Andrew, James, and John to follow him as his first disciples.
Obviously, there were more than just four people working that
day along the Sea of Galilee. And probably there were others
who were smarter, stronger, more hard working than these
selected. Why did Jesus invite those particular ones to come
after him, to become the core of his Super Bowl Team? Jesus
must have had some criteria in mind. He must have felt those
four would be open to his message, he must have felt they
would be able to proclaim the Gospel, in word and in action. He
must have felt that like him, they too could be a light to those in
darkness.
Like Peter, Andrew, James, and John, we too have been
called by the Lord to follow him as members of His Church. We
too have been called to be a shining light to those in darkness.
We too have been called to be "fishers of men and women and
children" who bring others to Christ by our words and actions.
That call from Christ comes to all who are baptized, yes ALL OF
US! He reminds us of that choice each time the Mass comes to
a close and we are sent forth in peace to love and serve the
Lord.
Regardless of whom we are, Christ had criteria for choosing us
to be on His Super Bowl Team, and encourages us to invite
others to join the team. There can be unlimited members on
Jesus’ Super Bowl Teams! So let’s get out there and be a light
to the world, more exciting than any halftime show, and sharing
a wonderful trophy of everlasting life with the original Coach of
the Super Bowl of Life! Amen and High Five! ☺ God bless you, and in all things, Choose Life! In Christian service, Ed Karpinski
Pastoral Associate, Faith Formation
