Dear Parishioners,

Today we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Ordinary

Time. It is hard to believe that just a few weeks ago we

were singing Christmas Carols and in just a few days we

will be singing Lenten Hymns. The change in the Church’s

seasons will be very noticeable. We move from a

beautifully decorated church to one with a stark

atmosphere. Our music changes from the much loved

Carols to a more somber tone.

The theme of todays Scripture readings helps us to

focus on the true theme of Ash Wednesday - that of Christ

calling us to follow him. Todays readings are all about

being called by Christ to a deeper examining of our faith.

“The Sunnous” - our hymn at the Preparation of

Gifts sums up this entire upcoming season of Lent. Let us

all consider at length the opening words of the hymn “Will

you come and follow me - If I but call your name. Will you

let my life be grown in you and you in me?”.

Parishes of West Essex Announce

10th Anniversary Lenten Faith Quest Speaker Series

The parishes of West Essex will present the 10th annual Lenten Adult Spirituality Forum - FAITH QUEST on Wednesday evenings February 24th, March 2nd, March 9th and March 16th, 2016 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at St. Thomas More Parish in Fairfield, N.J. The program is open to the public and the three speaker topic areas are: Prayer and Spirituality, Sacred Scripture, and Faith in Practice. Faith Quest is an initiative of St. Aloysius, Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament, Notre Dame and St. Thomas More.

Prayer in Spirituality Presenters:

February 24 - Nonprofit chief executive Greg Tobin will speak on “The Spirituality of St. Patrick.” He has published dozens of books including “The Wisdom of St. Patrick: Inspirations from the Patron Saint of Ireland”, “The Good Pope” (a biography of John XXIII), “Selecting the Pope, Holy Father” (a biography of Pope Benedict XVI), and “Religion in America” (as co-general editor). Tobin holds a master’s degree in theology from Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology and is a graduate of Yale University.

March 2 – Author and counselor Dr. Ginger Grancagnolo will speak on “The Last Seven Words of Christ: A Meditation for Life.” She will look at Good Friday, the darkest hours of humanity when Jesus Christ hung limp and dying upon the cross and how he spoke seven times with words that sound contradictory. What was He really saying? How are these words a bridge from fear to freedom? Grancagnolo has extensive experience in education, psychology and theology and holds a doctorate in Christian ministry.

Sacred Scripture Presenters:

February 24 – Father Gene Gniewyk, retired parochial vicar of St. Thomas More in Fairfield, will speak on “The Story of Joseph and His Brothers” and how the story can give Jews and Christians hope in today’s world. Father holds degrees from Seton Hall University and Immaculate Conception Seminary.

March 2 – Father Gene Gniewyk, retired parochial vicar of St. Thomas More in Fairfield, will present on “Psalm 22: A primer of Prayer for Jesus and the Christian.” Father will look at how the psalm parallels the life of Jesus and can give meaning to one’s life.

Faith in Practice Presenters:

February 24 – Father Tom Dente, pastor of Notre Dame Parish in North Caldwell, will present on “The Jubilee Year of Mercy.” Pope Francis announced a Jubilee Year of Mercy which began on December 8, 2015. Join Fr. Dente as he unpacks the meaning of the Holy Year of Mercy and how God’s mercy can touch your life. Father is also the director of the Office of Divine Worship for the Archdiocese of Newark, serves on the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission, and is an active member of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions. He holds a Master of Divinity degree from Immaculate Conception Seminary and an M.A. in Liturgical Studies from the University of Notre Dame.

March 2 – Educator Jonathon D. Lace will speak on “Theology and Science: A Catholic Understanding.” He teaches biblical studies and iOS application development at Seton Hall Preparatory School. He created the Theologica for iPhone app and is co-host of the podcast “Vernacular” which focuses on faith, culture and meaning. Lace is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the Society for Biblical Studies, the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences and the American Teilhard Association.

Location - St. Thomas More parish is located at 12 Hollywood Ave, Fairfield, NJ An offering of $3.00 per session or $10.00 for the four week series is requested to help defray expenses. Pre-registration is also requested. For a brochure and registration form, contact any of the other sponsoring parishes. Attendance at prior sessions is not necessary to benefit from participation at a later session. All sessions qualify for catechist certification.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

With great joy and excitement we write to you about the upcoming Women’s Day of Reflection www.rcan.org/

womenscommission (Sat., Feb. 27, 2016); and Catholic Men’s Conference www.rcanmenscommission.org

(Sat., March 5, 2016); both at Seton Hall University.

Both events, this year, are a little shorter. They end with Mass at 12:30 p.m. This allows more time for the

participants to be with their families and to reap the spiritual benefits of the day together. Once again, we have

dynamic and inspiring speakers. It is our hope and prayer that the environment of the day: the speakers, the

prayer, the community, the sacraments, all together will help all attendees present encounter the Lord and come

that much closer to Him.

This Jubilee Year of Mercy makes these days a true pilgrimage event. Come and pray together in fellowship.

Meatloaf Saturday Meatloaf Saturday this month will be February 20th.

Please drop meatloaves to the rectory by 10:00 a.m. on

Saturday. If anyone would like information on this

ministry, please call Howard Hardwick at 973-226-8144.
