Parish Unity Sunday

Community • Love • Faith • Unity

St. Andrews Catholic Community

We will again gather in unity as a community in love and faith on March 8th. Mass will be at 9:30 AM. This will be the only Mass on this Sunday.

Bishop Thomas will be here to celebrate Mass and to formally install Fr. Ron Zanoni as our pastor in a special ceremony that will reflect prayerfully on the role of the pastor, highlight-ing his sacramental ministry.

Bishop Thomas will then join us afterwards for a Brunch Reception to honor our newly installed pastor and provide us the opportuni-ty to again meet or greet our bishop, as well as to enjoy fellowship. We encourage you also to meet and get to know some our new mem-bers of St. Andrew who joined us this past year. Look for a red name tag!

The Social Committee will organize thisevent, but we still need volunteers tohelp by signing up to bring these food items for that day: coffee cakes, muffins, deviled eggs, egg/sausage/ham casserole dishes, fresh fruit, and orange juice. SIGN-UP after Mass in the parish hall or contact the office.

Thank-you as always for your support!

Census & Townhall Meeting Summary

February 23, 2020

Dear Brother and Sisters, Thank you for participating in our parish census update over the month of December. There were 185 census forms returned. We are in the process of comparing this information with our previous data bases. We hope to contact those who did not respond to see if they continue to wish to be part of our St. Andrew’s community. On Sunday, January 12, 2020 St. Andrew Catholic Community offered a townhall meeting following both Sunday Masses as part of the Extended Liturgy. Over one hundred parish members both teen and adults participated. We were able to obtain some important informa-tion from each of you who participated. You can go to our website www.standrewbc.org/ to see the entire results gathered by our table leaders. Here is a summary of the four questions. What are the strengths of St. Andrew’s Parish? The results affirmed that we are a welcoming, strong tightknit community. We are small community, who offers support and pastoral care to each other. Our social ministry offers extended liturgies each Sunday after Mass allowing for the opportunity for fellowship. We have a great gift of a strong group of volunteers. Almost half of the parish are volunteers in many capacities at St. Andrew’s. Our Sunday liturgies engage the community to participate along with our music and liturgical ministries. We are inspired by the Word of God and homilies of Fr. Ron, Fr. Tony, and Deacon Tim; we are nourished by the Eucharist to be community to each other.

...Townhall Meeting Summary, cont’d

What are challenges of St. Andrew’s? Our challenges as in any organization are numerous. Absence of children and young families is a common concern along with our aging population and the needs both present. The limited Sunday Masses and lack of scheduled reconciliation challenges many in the participating in our sacramental obliga-tions. Concerns were raised regarding faith formation such as no director, dropping our Kindergarten Program and Children’s Liturgy of the Word, and Adult Evening Formation. Declining financial support, parish communication, engaging new parishioners to volunteer opportunities within our parish, and the Boulder City Community were also raised. Our aging community have feelings of isolation, inability to drive to Mass or activities. Many of you also suggested updating our parish directory, instituting a Parish Pastoral Council and a need for outreaching to our new and former parish membership.

What are challenges of our Boulder City Community? Lack of growth resulting in limited employment opportunities, restaurants, and limited housing. Housing prices have risen resulting in outpricing homes for our young families and seniors on fixed incomes and, in turn declining school enrollment and funding. Homelessness and lack of Social Services is another common concern. Our aging population has resulted in loneliness and isolation due to limited transportation and senior housing. Food insecurities for both families and seniors and concerns over transparency of the city government are also a few of the issues raised by our discussion groups.

How can St. Andrew’s help to meet the challenges of our Boulder City Community? Our groups shared common solutions to this challenge from continue to be ecumenical and get involved in our community through interfaith networking, collaboration and education with community organizations and other churches helping those in need.

We will not be able to solve these problems overnight but know that there is power in numbers. St. Andrew’s will be able to be a presence and beacon of light to our community through collaboration, volunteerism, education and financial support.

Blessings to you and your families as we enter this new decade with God’s grace and strength,

Fr. Ron and Deacon Tim

Ash Wednesday CollectionLetter from Bishop Thomas

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

On February 26, our Diocese will take up its annual Ash Wednesday Collection for Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada.

Our faith calls us to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving throughout the Lenten season. Through our Lenten stewardship, we are able to put the Corporal Works of Mercy into practice by supporting Catholic Charities’ efforts to provide food, shelter, and comprehensive services to each and every person created in the image and likeness of God.

Feeding the hungry: One in six seniors in Southern Nevada struggles with hunger. Catholic Chari-ties’ Meals on Wheels serves more than 2,200 isolated and homebound seniors daily. The St. Vin-cent Lied Dining Facility serves a free meal every day of the year to over 750 hungry men, wom-en, and children. The Hands of Hope Community Food Pantry provides supplemental groceries to over 5,000 needy families each month. Your generosity helps to fund these vital programs.

Sheltering the homeless: Many of the homeless individuals given shelter at Catholic Charities each day and night are dealing with mental health and/or addiction problems. Your donations provide the necessary funds to hire much-needed case managers who provide one-on-one assis-tance to help over 200 men successfully transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Whether people struggle with poverty, homelessness, being homebound, or adjusting to life as a refugee, your almsgiving makes it possible for Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada to provide help and hope to more than 4,200 men, women, and children every day.

Please be generous and prayerfully consider how you can support this important collection living out your Lenten discipleship.

May the Lord bless you and your families this Lent, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ,

+George Leo ThomasBishop of Las Vegas
