LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING | Isaiah 50: 4-7 RESPONSORIAL PSALM | Psalm 22 Rachel Burckardt

All who see me scoff at me; they mock me with parted lips, they wag their heads: "He relied on the LORD; let him deliver him, let him rescue him, if he loves him." Indeed, many dogs surround me, a pack of evildoers closes in upon me; They have pierced my hands and my feet; I can count all my bones. They divide my garments among them, and for my vesture they cast lots. But you, O LORD, be not far from me; O my help, hasten to aid me. I will proclaim your name to my brethren; in the midst of the assembly I will praise you: "You who fear the LORD, praise him; all you descendants of Jacob, give glory to him; revere him, all you descendants of Israel!"

GOSPEL | Matthew 26: 14-27 HOMILY

NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of SolidarityLots of us can work from home and shelter-in-place as much as possible. But there are many people in professions essential to sustaining life for the rest of us who still go to work, possibly at risk to their own health. In solidarity we pray for essential workers and give thanks for their sacrificial service. Be sure to thank these heroes when you see them.

Our Elect and CandidatesPlease keep our Elect and Candidates in your prayer during this period of "Purification and Enlightenment." The unique circumstances that we are in this year are not ideal, but we want to continue to pray for and find creative ways to show our love and support for these women and men as they pre-pare to receive the Easter sacraments and become mem-bers of our community.

PassoverThe festival of Passover begins at sundown this Wednesday evening and ends at sun-down on Thursday, April 16. Passover is the oldest and most important religious festival in Judaism, commemorating God's deliver-

ance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Be sure to wish your Jewish friends and family members a Happy Pesach as they gather at the seder to celebrate the blessings of free-dom, faith, and family.

Vespers TonightJoin us tonight at 6:00 on facebook Live for Vespers on the evening of Palm Sunday

Stations of the CrossPraying the Stations of the Cross is one of the Church's ancient Lenten traditions. Although we are unable to be together in person this year, we will live-stream the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday at 12:00 noon. To participate, you can find the video on our youtube channel or our website at www.stceciliaboston.org You

can also pray the Stations online by visiting www.stjames-cathedral.org/Prayer/jkblstations/stations.htm

Child Abuse Prevention MonthApril is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Pray that God may grant those who have suffered abuse the courage to tell their story and seek healing. Pray also that bishops and other church leaders will promote justice and healing for survivors and that those who commit these crimes will be held accountable.

Dear Friends,

As we commemorate the Passion of the Lord this Palm Sunday, we find ourselves in the final days of a Lent we couldn't have imagined. So much has changed since Ash Wednesday, when we began this forty-day period in a church packed with nearly 700 people. Despite the fears and anxieties that accompany these uncharted waters, we are finding new ways of being church and also Christ for one another. Bishop Robert McElroy of the Diocese of San Diego reflects on the present need for the Church to adapt, "Every single pattern of pastoral service, sacra-mental life, and the proclamation of the Gospel has to be rethought and reconfigured in a radical manner."

Well, it's safe to say, we are doing just that. We have been amazed by the energy, creativity, optimism, and resilience that we've seen emerge from our lay leadership and par-ish staff. The community of Saint Cecilia continues to rei-magine new ways of participation in the most important elements of our common life as Catholic Christians. And here we are, at the beginning of the week we call "holy," when we will commemorate and remember the events and stories that form us. Participating from home might seem strange, but perhaps if we allow ourselves to be open, our hearts will be receptive in a whole new way.

We hope you will be with us for our solemn celebration of the Easter Triduum—the three-day celebration that be-gins on Holy Thursday with the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper, continues on Good Friday, reaches its high point at Saturday night's Great Vigil, and closes with Paschal Vespers on Easter evening.

These liturgies will be adapted because of this year's unique circumstances. But what remains the same is our need to be united to one another in prayer, storytelling, song, and service. Invite your friends to join us and be sure to visit our website for all the resources you'll need to prepare for and take part in these celebrations.

In a special way, please remember to pray for our six Elect who normally would be baptized and confirmed at the Easter Vigil, and for our nine Candidates who have been preparing for confirmation. These women and men have been faithfully preparing to receive the Easter sacraments and now must wait until we are able to gather in person.

Let us commit to having a joyous and holy Easter celebra-tion!

Love,Father John and the Parish Staff

Mask Donation for Medical

Workers in Boston

Please consider donating masks to support doctors and nurs-es treating COVID-19 patients in Boston hospitals. Masks will go directly to a Clinical Advisor at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to support the ICU who is in desperate need of more. We are collecting N-95s (construction) and ASTM Level 2 or 3 (dentist and veterinarians). Please check your garages, basements, and supply closets. Ask your family and friends in construction, dentistry, and veterinary practices to help protect doctors and nurses on the front lines. Even just one mask would go a long way. Thank you for your help and support.

Please email Lauren Gearty Hagan at [email protected] to arrange for local pickup, drop-off, or donation by mail. Lauren's sister Tricia is a nurse at Beth Israel.

Saint Cecilia Prayer Line

We have created a call-in prayer line for all those who might need to hear some extra encouragement each day and those who don't have access to computers or the internet. You can call in to 857-317-3832 for a different message each day. Please feel free to share!

THE WORK SUPPORTED BY THE RICE

BOWLS

Founded in 1943 in response to the humanitarian crises caused by World War II, Catholic Relief Services carries out the commitment of the Bishops of the United States to assist the poor and vulnerable overseas. The annual Rice Bowl fundraiser that takes place during Lent is a ma-jor source of funding for CRS' work in over 100 countries, serving people of all faiths.

With ongoing dual crises in Syria and Iraq entering their 6th and 3rd years, respectively, the Kingdom of Jordan continues to play host to more than 1.3 million refugees, according to government estimates. In spite of its scarce resources, Jordan’s geographical location and its openness and stability have made it a safe haven for refugees for de-cades, with refugees currently residing in Jordan from Pal-estine, Sudan, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. The government has put continuous and consistent efforts towards address-ing key social and security issues, confirming Jordan as a stable and open country and a respected member of the international community.

While the majority of the Jordanian population is Muslim, there is a significant presence of Christian communities, dating back to the very beginning of Christianity. Arabic-speaking Orthodox and Catholic churches have a well-re-spected role in social life.In Jordan, Catholic Relief Services works with the local Caritas to provide —annually — critical assistance to more than 68,000 Syrian and Iraqi refugees and poor Jordanians, including basic health and psychoso-cial services, education, and basic emergency services. CRS also provides accompaniment to Caritas Jordan, promot-ing a strong partnership relationship and strengthening in-stitutional capacity for efficient operational management and program implementation.

Did you know that 25% of the funds collected supports the work of our friends at Catholic Charities of Boston? On a designated Sunday during the Easter Season, you will be invited to bring your filled bank back to church and we will send all of the money collected to CRS. For more informa-tion, visit: http://orb.crs.org/.

SAINT CECILIA PARISH

I’m sure most of us have images of Palm Sunday from movies that we’ve seen. We imagine Jesus riding on a donkey as the people of Jerusalem wave palm branches and cheer, “Hosanna in the highest!” And, as the Gospels describe it, the events of the first Palm Sunday probably weren't too different from that.

A few weeks ago I was on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and in Jerusalem you can trace the route that Jesus took, from the Mount of Olives, down into the Kidron Valley and then up to Jerusalem, through a city gate that they can still identify.

But, for me, Palm Sunday is less about the scenes than about the spiritual message. That is, less about exteriors than about the interiors. Specifically, about how life can change so suddenly. One day Jesus is entering the holy city to the crowd’s cheers, a few days later he is being condemned by the crowds and nailed to a cross.

It’s a sobering reminder of quickly our lives can change. It can be shocking when, all of a sudden, you have a change in fortune. You lose your job, get diagnosed with an illness, or suffer a death in your family. But Jesus understands what you’re going through, because he has gone through this himself. He understands you not only because he’s divine and knows all things but because he is human and experienced all things.

During Holy Week, then, perhaps you could reflect on this essential truth: Jesus understands you.

HELPING OUR NEIGHBORS

EXPERIENCING FOOD INSECURITY

With the suspension of Masses, we are not currently able to collect food donations for Catholic Charities' Dorches-ter food pantry in the narthex. Because schools are out of session and many service workers are being laid off or fur-loughed, demand at all pantries has skyrocketed. Some on-line vendors are having difficulty filling orders, but perhaps you would like to help our friends at Catholic Charities by sending items through Amazon.com, Target.com, Walmart.com, or similar websites. Any shelf-stable items would be appreciated, but the most requested items are: canned tuna fish, tomato sauce, white flour pasta and spaghetti, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, Cheerios or corn flakes, cooking oil, and canned chicken breast. Items purchased on-line should be sent to:
