ESPERAR LO INESPERADO Si alguna vez se te pasó por la mente que a Je-sús le faltaba un poco del sen do del humor, el Evange-lio de hoy des erra esa noción. La parábola de Jesús sobre las cinco jóvenes precavidas y las cinco jóvenes descuidadas es sumamente chistosa. Las circunstancias de la parábola sin duda resultaban familiares a los que escuchaban a Jesús, como lo son para nosotros. Las bo-das nunca, nunca comienzan a la hora. Siempre hay un retraso. Botones que se caen al úl mo minuto. Flores que se marchitan. Vehículos llenos de invitados atasca-dos en el tráfico. Solistas que contraen laringi s. ¡Novias, novios o sacerdotes que llegan tarde! Así que la única manera razonable de encarar una boda es con buen sen do del humor, conscientes de que algo va a salir mal, y, cuando eso suceda, sonreír. Jesús cuenta esta historia chistosa para alentar-nos a que seamos vigilantes, sí; a estar preparados, sí. Pero no nos la cuenta para que nos amarguemos y nos ensombrezcamos. Los apesadumbrados emblan, tu-bean, pierden de vista su lugar y propósito, y se quedan dormidos. Los fes vos saben que sucederá lo inespera-do –más que seguro —así que están despiertos en su puesto y listos para cumplir su propósito en el acto.

EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED

If it ever crossed your mind that Jesus was some-what lacking in a sense of humor, today’s Gospel should belie any such no on. Jesus’ story of the five wise and five foolish bridesmaids is downright hilarious. The circumstanc-es of the story were surely familiar to Jesus’ listeners, just as they are—if we think about it—to us. Weddings never, ever start on me. There’s always a delay. Bu ons pop off at the last minute. Flowers wilt. Cars full of wedding guests get caught in traffic. Soloists contract laryngi s. Brides or grooms or priests show up late! So the only reasonable way to approach a wedding is with a sense of humor, to realize that something probably will go awry, and, when that hap-pens, to smile about it.

Jesus tells this funny story to encourage us to be watchful, yes; to be ready, yes. But he doesn’t tell it to make us dour and somber. The heavy-hearted tremble, wa-ver, lose sight of their place and purpose, and fall asleep. The lighthearted know that the unexpected will happen—is bound to happen—so they are awake in their place and ready in their purpose when it comes. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Reflec ons with the Word of God from the priests of St. Cecilia Parish

November 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Read Wisdom 6: 12-16, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, Ma hew 25: 1-13

“Be wise and stay awake, then we will always be with the Lord!”

We are approaching the end of the liturgical year and the scriptures at Mass are preparing us to know what is needed from us when the world ends, and Jesus Christ returns. For we don’t know the day, the year or the hour of this event. In prepara on for this, the book of Wisdom teaches us to seek, find and possess au-then c wisdom; for the one who does will never be disappointed. Each day the humble become wise through praying, a ending Mass, learning the mysteries of God, accep ng hardships as the path to peace, and trus ngly surrenders the self into the Father’s love.

St. Augus ne offers this insight on staying awake: “Watch with the heart, watch with faith, watch with love, watch with charity, watch with good works; make ready the lamps, make sure they do not go out; renew them with the inner oil of an upright conscience; then shall the Bridegroom enfold you in the embrace of

his love and bring you into his banquet room, where your lamp can never be ex nguished.” From this we can understand Jesus’ parable contras ng the wise from the foolish virgins. The foolish did not commit to learning the light of wisdom or staying awake with the oil of charity. When our me comes, we do not want to hear from Jesus as they did: “Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.” While there is me, there is hope. Our Lord in his boun ful mercy, con nually seeks us out and gives us the opportunity to mend our ways. Respond yes to this and stay blessed in St. Paul’s encouraging words for the end of me, “We shall always be with the Lord!”

"Sean sabios y permanezcan despiertos, entonces siempre estaremos con el Señor.”

Nos acercamos al final del año litúrgico y las lecturas de la Misa nos preparan para ver lo que necesitamos cuando el mundo termine, y Jesucristo regrese de nuevo. Nadie sabe el día, el año o la hora de este acontecimiento.

En preparación para esto, el libro de Sabiduría nos enseña a busca y poseer sabiduría autén ca; para el que lo hace nunca se decepcionará. Cada día los humildes se vuelven sabios al orar, asis r a la Misa y aprender los misterios de Dios, aceptar las dificultades como el camino hacia la paz y entregarse con-fiando al amor del Padre. San Agus n ofrece esta visión de permanecer despierto: "Mira con el corazón, mira con fe, mira con amor, mira con caridad, mira con buenas obras; prepara las lám-paras, asegúrese de que no salgan; renovarlos con el aceite interior de una conciencia recta; entonces el Esposo envolverá en el abrazo de su amor y les llevará a su banquetes, donde su lámpara nunca apagará." De esto podemos entender la parábola de Jesús que contrasta con la ac tud de las vírgenes insensatas. Los necios no se comprometen en encender la luz de la sabiduría ni en estar despiertos con el aceite de la caridad. Cuando llega nuestro momento, no queremos escuchar de Jesús lo que le dijo a ellas: "Amén, te digo que no te conozco."

Mientras haya empo, hay esperanza. Nuestro Señor, en su abundante misericordia, nos busca con nuamente y nos da la oportunidad de reparar nuestros caminos. Dile a Jesús que sí y permanezcan bendecidos con las alentadoras palabras de San Pablo: "¡Siempre estaremos con el Señor!"

Sacrament of Marriage The Pastoral Guidelines for Marriage Prepara-tion are that a minimum of 7 months be set aside for personal preparation for marriage. Couples should refrain from setting a firm date until after they have called the office to discuss marriage plans. Weddings are celebrated Satur-days at 2pm. Quinceañeras Celebraciones son Sábados. Las quinceañeras tienen que haber recibido los sacramentos (por lo menos 1ra Comunión). Comuníquese con la oficina para hacer una cita por lo menos 4 meses antes de la celebración. Para reservar la fecha de la Quinceañera la donación es de $350 y se debe traer el día de la cita.
