WELCOME TO ST. CHRISTOPHER’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH!

Visitors and New Members: Parishioners and visitors are encouraged to fill out

a welcome card found on the back of each pew. We welcome all input, such as a

request for a prayer, particular hymn, or more information about St.

Nursery Care: is available for infants and toddlers at the later service. Ask an

ANNOUNCEMENTS We Welcome the Rev. David M. Crosby, who is with us today while Father Peter is away presiding over the wedding of Karen Johnson and Kyle Craig. For our Medicare Parishioners - Do not fall prey to this scam - Because there are always scammers out there trying to take advantage of people, we like to pass on helpful information. Apparently new Medicare cards are coming out this month. If you are on Medicare there is nothing for you to do; there is NO FEE and the new cards will be mailed directly to you. Sadly, scammers are taking advantage of this "new card" situation by phoning people and asking for "a fee" (of which there is none) for the new card, and/or personal information. Please do not fall prey to these people, but instead "pray" for them, and know that Medicare will send you your card, in the mail! If you know someone who has fallen victim to this, please reach out to those agencies who can help you combat identity theft. "Spring" into Children's Church. Lots of fun activities going on this spring in Children's Church. This Sunday (4/22/18) we celebrate Earth Day with a nature walk and craft; next Sunday (4/29/18) we will honor the St. Christopher's Preschool for Preschool Sunday. On May 6, plan to dress the kids to get dirty when we plant marigolds in the ECHO garden.

Searching For Sunday Adult Formation - Final Two Weeks are Sunday, April 22 and 29! After the pause for Lent, adult formation "Searching For Sunday" will resume for the final two sections: Anointing the Sick and Marriage. Feel free to join us, even if you haven't read the book. The author's, Rachel Held Evans, memoir takes on the church, breaking down her journey with Christ through the seven sacraments of the church. No need to have read the book, handouts will be available at class to help you to follow along.

Save the Date for Youth Sunday. Youth Sunday will be on June 10-- a service for the children, by the children. We would like to use that time to honor our youth who have been busy engaged in this congregation and also honor the volunteers that have taken time to help. More details to follow closer to the date.

FACETS Hot Meals for the Homeless - Friday, April 27 Please note: For this month only we are switching with Good Shepherd and delivering Friday instead of Thursday. The Hypothermia Shelters closed at the end of March, so we will have a larger group to feed. If you would like to help, just click on the link below to sign up. If you want to know more about what a task entails, just email me for more information. We really need another driver--the two we have are not always available, and a third would mean each would only drive twice a year. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0949aaa62ba4fb6-hotmeals2 Thank you, Janet Bush, 703-371-2465, [email protected]

From the library corner: We are very excited to give the good news that the library is thriving and books are being checked out and returned. The next good news is the library is getting a fresh look. We will be staining the panel walls, replacing the carpet, installing

new window treatments, putting a fresh coat of paint and extending the carpet into the library closet during this time. The church library will be closed from June 15 – 19, 2018. The schedule:

Friday, June 15 - remove books, shelves, furniture from the library

Saturday, June 16th - staining the panel walls

Sunday, June 17th - June 19th - any touch ups that might be needed and putting the books, shelves furniture back in the library.

We would love your help! Young adults are welcome to help. (Community service projects) A sign-up sheet will be placed in the fellowship hall or you can email Katie Alleman at [email protected] Thank you for your continued support, Katie Alleman, Church librarian

Diocese of Virginia to Elect Second Bishop Suffragan in November 2018 Nominations for our second Bishop Suffragan are now open. Please visit the Diocese of Virginia website (www.thediocese.net ) for the profile and for the application. Nominations must be received by 5:00

p.m., Friday April 27. The ministry of Bishop is an important one for the Church, and has been from apostolic times. All Bishops share in this ministry and the ordination service itself highlights the collegial nature of this ministry. (Please see The Book of Common Prayer, page 512ff.) At the same time, it is important to note that there are several functional differences between a Bishop Diocesan and a Bishop Suffragan. There are a number of canonically mandated responsibilities that are designated for the Bishop Diocesan and cannot be delegated. Also, the Bishop Diocesan sets the vision for the Diocese, while a Bishop Suffragan assists in the implementation of that vision and undertakes work specifically designated to him or her by the Bishop Diocesan. Being a Suffragan is a bit like “leading from the second chair,” to quote the title of a popular book. The Episcopal Church has 111 dioceses, and there are currently only nine Bishops Suffragan overall. The new Bishop Suffragan in Virginia will share in the depth and breadth of episcopal ministry and will provide specific leadership for the pastoral

care of clergy and their families, support and development of campus ministries, and ecumenical and interfaith relationships. Working primarily out of the Northern Virginia office, the second Suffragan will serve as the “first responder” for clergy and congregations in that region, and will also support episcopal ministry throughout the Diocese. Please e-mail the search committee at [email protected] with any questions. Do you know someone who would make a great Bishop Suffragan? Please be in touch with them, ask them to visit our website and make an application. And as always, please keep the Diocese and this election in your prayers.
