God wants to be first
Love is a wonderful feeling, but that doesn't mean it's devoid of any perversity. It is also exposed to deformation, degeneration or overestimation of its value. Jesus says that not only do you have to separate yourself from your father, mother, sisters and brothers, but even from your own self and your own life. Loving yourself can mean accepting yourself, but it can also mean a self-centered gaze upon one’s self. Narcissus perceived himself in a perfect way and with blind admiration. It would be difficult for such a person to take even a step after Jesus. You can love your mother, but also be dependent on her and subordinate to her. To love your father is often to please him or to be terrified of him. To love your brothers is not always to wish them good, but often to envy or compete with them. Similarly, loving a sister can mean using her or being manipulated by her. People call many toxic bonds love, but that doesn't mean that everything is really worthy of the word. Jesus, speaking of hatred for loved ones, meant not only deformed settle-ments that must be broken for healthy references to appear. He really speaks of detachment from the family with such force as if you hated it. Sometimes, for His love, we become objects of family ha-tred. We know many people who, after conversion, were simply harassed at home by their parents or siblings. An important addition is the poem in which Jesus explains that everyone who does not say goodbye to everyone, which means, does not renounce everyone, will not become his disciple. The hatred Jesus speaks of is a kind of parting rather than hatred in the full sense of the word. So why is this detachment from family ties called hate? Hatred is, as we know, an extremely strong feeling that engages the whole person to reject something or someone. It is more about separating from someone with power comparable to hatred, rather than just hatred, because then the text would be in great conflict with the commandment of love. Sometimes Jesus used exaggeration to emphasize the importance and necessity of adopting certain attitudes. For example, he said that if the eye is a cause for sin, it must be plucked, or if the hand is a cause for sin, it must be cut off. This is not an incentive for self-mutilation, but for a firm break with the cause of sin, its source, or the sin itself, without which we think we would no longer be able to function normally.
Jesus himself never stopped loving his mother, but he left her and did not even come to Nazareth for a short vacation. For many people who live in abnormal family ties, such requirements of Jesus seem abnormal. But it is not God who has a sick heart, but us!

Kochać ojca to często zadowalać go lub panicznie się go obawiać.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians share a love for the Byzantine liturgy because it is during the Eucharist that the Church is most true to its identity, expresses its integrity, and discovers its vocation. Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians celebrate essentially the identical liturgy, with only very slight variations. It is a fairly complex ritual weaving together three separate layers of prayers: a liturgy prayed in the sanctuary by priests, often hidden by a curtain or screen; a liturgy sung by the assembly and led by a deacon in front of a screen formed of painted icons; and a third layer of private prayer by the priest, who prays in support of the deacon and the faithful. It is an eyes-wide-open experience, gorgeous in visuals, and filled with the sound of God’s people singing prayer. The energy of the worship centers on the presence of Christ, largely through an awareness of heaven touching earth when the Church gathers to celebrate. In the late twentieth century, Latin Rite Catholics were encouraged to embrace a style of worship that was “full, conscious, and active,” a value that has never been lost in the East. The liturgy has great impact in its beauty, in its poetry and contemplation, and by the actions of bowing, signing with the cross, and chanting that are required of the assembly. Contact with the Eastern Church reveals some key values that have been obscured in our own Church and are slowly being recovered. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

COMING TO SAINT FABIAN PARISH
Representatives of the Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese will be present at our parish Masses on the weekend of September 7th & 8th to answer any questions you may have on burial arrangements. Questions such as cremation burial options, availability of adjoining family burial locations, extended no-interest purchase programs. Follow your Faith to a Catholic Cemetery and realize how easy it is to Pre-Plan yours or a loved one’s final arrangements. Remember, the decisions you make today will give YOU peace of mind now and your loved one’s peace of mind for THEIR tomorrows.
Help the Handicapped
St. Fabian SPRED Program is looking for volunteers who are 18 years or older to give a few hours of their time to help with the
Knights of Columbus Intellectual Disabilities Tootsie Roll Drive to be held on
Friday, September 20th and Saturday, September 21st
and before and after all the Masses the weekend of September 21st & 22nd.
The money earned from this drive will support our SPRED Program for the upcoming year. SPRED (Special Religious Education Division) is a ministry that serves the needs of our special
friends by helping them grow in their awareness of God. We currently service 26 handicapped adults and meet with them bi-weekly for catechesis. This drive is SPRED’S only means of support, unless someone gives us a direct donation.
There is no age limitations for collecting in businesses, banks, stores and at our Masses, but on the street corners you must be 18 years old. Funds are donated by the amount of hours worked.
Interested individuals can register with their requested times of commitment to:
Dave Kroll, K of C Drive Chairman — 773-505-3408 or [email protected] Paula Daley, SPRED Chairman — 708-458-2562 or [email protected]
Sign up will take place the weekend of September 14th & 15th in the Narthex after all Masses. Look for the signup sheets on the Narthex table.
Not sure of your schedule — just show up at Hann Funeral Home, 8230 S. Harlem Avenue, between the hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on September 20th & 21st or talk to one of the K.C’s before the
Mass you are attending. There will be spots available at various banks if you feel the need to sit.
If everyone gives just a little time, our “special friends” will gain so much!

Open Your Bible Announcing St. Fabian’s NEW Bible Study: Open Your Bible. Come join us this Fall for an exciting new parish Bible study as we study and explore Scripture. The Bible expresses God’s love in action yesterday, today, and forever. One of the most important things we can do to experience God is to read His Word on a consistent basis. It is just as important as experiencing it with others. Joining a small group Bible study is for you whether you have
no idea where to start, crave spiritual friendships or want to go even deeper. Relating scripture or current issues to everyday life experiences enables each member to share their journey of faith with one another and support one another in trying to live out our faith in the world. We will meet on Friday mornings in Room #5 right after the 9am Mass for about an hour. We will start our session on September 20, 2019. You can join our Bible study at any time. We are a very welcoming group, we learn from each other and have meaningful, interesting and at times fun discussions. Our facilitators will be Deacon Joe Stalcup and Deacon Ken Zawadzki. Please call the parish office (708) 599-1110 for more information.

Mdr 9,13-18b Prawdziwa m¹droœæ
Czytanie z Ksiêgi M¹droœci
Któ¿ z ludzi rozezna zamys³ Bo¿y albo któ¿ pojmie wolê Pana? Nieœmia³e s¹ myœli œmiertelników i przewidywania nasze zawodne, bo œmiertelne cia³o przygniata duszê i ziemski przybytek obci¹¿a lotny umys³. Oto S³owo Bo¿e.
PSALM RESPONSORYJNY:
Ps 90,3-4.5-6.12-13.14 i 17
Obracasz w proch cz³owieka i mówisz: „Wracajcie, synowie ludzcy”.

Czytanie z Listu œwiêtego Paw³a Aposto³a do Filemona
Zamierza³em go trzymaæ przy sobie, aby zamiast ciebie oddawa³ mi us³ugi w kajdanach noszonych dla Ewangelii. Oto S³owo Bo¿e.
ŒPIEW PRZED EWANGELI¥:
Ps 119,135
Oka¿ Twemu s³udze œwiat³o swego oblicza i naucz mnie Twoich ustaw.
EWANGELIA
£k 14,25-33 Kto nie wyrzeka siê wszystkiego, nie mo¿e byæ uczniem Jezusa
S³owa Ewangelii wed³ug œwiêtego £ukasza
Wielkie t³umy sz³y z Jezusem.
nienawiœci swego ojca i matki, ¿ony i dzieci, braci i sióstr, nadto i siebie samego, nie mo¿e byæ moim uczniem.
