Gain or Loss?

Having anything is an ennoblement and a necessity in our time. Goods that serve us in everyday life, once referred to as luxury, over time become the standard needed for life. However, there are values - goods that do not become outdated over the years or from the increase of technology or civiliza-tion. It is not a material good but a spiritual one. According to the reading of Joel, the good which the Lord sends us causes that when abundant in them, “You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.” (Joel 2:26). So liv-ing in accordance with what the Lord recommends to us can abound in both the temporal good and at the same time the intangible good – spiritual goods. Do we have a choice? I think the calculation is simple: living under God's umbrella, we live well, prosperously, praising God for his deeds, glory and goodness. This is what Saint Paul tells us in his Letter to Timothy, “For we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world; but if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and hurtful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evils; it is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced their hearts with many pangs. But as for you, man of God, shun all this; aim at righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.” (1 Timothy 6:7-11). Why such a long fragment? Because it is he who shows us the right truth, attitude and defines our way of life and behavior. The consequence of our choice is the right life and our approach to our lives.

In meditating on our lives, we can read properly the Gospel parable of Jesus. I am not saying that it is wrong when we possess and multiply our goods, but we should do it in moderation so as not to

lead ourselves into a "goat's horn". We can't eat cookies and a cookie. The art of choice, freedom and our will is given to us by God, but it is how we manage them, that makes our lives grow and bear fruit. These fruits are not only our property, they also belong to the Lord, if this happens to everyone “who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:21).

One to pogrążają ludzi w zgubę i zatracenie. (1Tm 6,7-11). Dlaczego aż tak długi fragment? Bo to on właśnie ukazuje nam właściwą prawdę, postawę i określa nam, nasz sposób życia i postępowania.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The wonderful diversity of life and worship among Roman Catholics of East and West is an example of God writing straight with crooked lines. The steady hand of the villainous Emperor Diocletian drew a line across Europe and Africa that split the empire in two, and for the most part determined how Christians would worship two thousand years later. Italy’s heel and the far northern city of Trieste fell on the Eastern side, and have had a form of Eastern liturgy ever since. Constantinople, which soon became the seat of the Roman Empire, became a base for Christianizing the East up to Russia and Poland. Poland was on the Eastern side, but a series of wars and medieval mayhem pushed the religious boundary back to the Ukraine, and Poland remains an outpost of the Latin Church to this day. An old rule of thumb declared that whatever religion was observed by the local prince, the people had to follow. This gave rise to persecution and migration as people sought toleration for their expressions of faith. In the United States, we are accustomed to peaceful collaboration among Christians of East and West, a situation that chal-lenges churches that still feel the pinch of age-old division. —James Field, Copyright © J. PAGE 5 TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 25, 2019

Twenty-first Week of Ordinary Time On the Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time Jesus cau-tions us about the difficulty of the Christian life, saying many will be unable to “enter through the narrow gate.” Jesus indi-cates it is those we do not expect who will be the first in the Kingdom: “Some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.” Tuesday is the Memorial of Saint Monica. Wednesday is the Memorial of Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. Thursday is the Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist. The first readings this week are from Paul's First Letter to the Thessalonians, the oldest book in the New Testament. The letters are affectionate and frank reminders of the hu-miliation and challenges that Paul met in preaching to this community he loved so much. These readings are a wonderful reminder that the letters of Paul were just that - letters to teach, encourage and support early communities of Chris-tians. Matthew's Gospel this week includes stories of Jesus strongly challenging the Pharisees. He saw how they made people's lives so difficult by their insistence on the rules and appearances while neglecting mercy and good faith. He chides them for paying attention to the extraneous and not the message: “Blind guides, who strain out the gnat and swallow the camel!" His criticism grows stronger: “On the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.” Jesus teaches about preparation: Stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.“ In the parable of the ten maidens who go out to meet the bride-groom, many of the women did not prepare for the meeting and do not have enough oil for their lamps and Jesus says again, “Stay awake.” Saturday's gospel is the dramatic story of the three servants who are given resources by their master and rewarded or punished for what they did with the re-sources they had. Sunday is the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. We are encouraged to embrace humility. The first reading from the Book of Sirach says it simply: “Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God.” In Luke's gospel is a beloved story of Jesus say-ing, “do not recline at table in the place of honor” at a ban-quet. “For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Daily Prayer This Week The old Baltimore Catechism defined Prayer as “raising the mind and heart to God.” It reminds us that prayer is not sim-ply saying words to God, or even thinking over religious things in our heads. Real prayer becomes a matter of the heart. We understand prayer best when we think of it as a relationship. Growing in prayer is to grow in love, in inti-macy, in a type of communication that is “heart to heart.” So, on the human level, if we have a difficult time receiving love or in surrendering our self-absorption and giving love or if we just haven't had much experience of being intimate and vul-nerable with another human being, then it will be difficult for us to do that with God. Conversely, anything we can do to develop our relationship skills, to de-selfish ourselves and practice accepting love and loving generously will help us grow in our relationship with God. Praying can often become easier, more personal and intimate. This week, we can go from hearing these wonderful readings to listening to Jesus with our hearts. It is great to begin this week asking for the grace to reflect throughout the day on how we will enter “the narrow gate”, by how we go about our day, interact with people, or return home from work. Then we can reflect on how we can humble ourselves and what that means for our day to day choices. We could ask for the grace to go deeper than the externals and rules and get to the heart of our faith - loving others with the same compassion and love that Jesus shows us. For some of us, it might be extremely helpful this week to take the word “awake” and to carry it all day long. “Help me stay awake, Lord: to be alert and attentive, focused and reflective today. It will be busy, but I ask that you help me be consciously aware that you will be with me all day.” We may want to ask, “Lord, let me be conscious of the many gifts and blessings you have given me. Let me reflect upon how I use each gift gratefully and for others. Let me really see today if there are gifts that I am neglecting, squandering, or simply are afraid to use. Then, give me the courage to give you thanks and to be a good steward of your gifts.” As we prepare for Sunday, we can begin to reflect upon giving up the honors in our lives. We can begin each day praying, “Lord, help me humble myself today, put myself last in caring for my family, in doing my job with a more selfless sense of service. Help me forgive people who aren't perform-ing well or behaving well. Help me see the way you give me life in this surrender, in this freedom to spend brief moments today in talking with you, friend-to-friend, in heart-felt connection with you, for others.”

You pay tithes of mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier things of the law: judgment and mercy and fidelity.

WELCOME THE STRANGER We have become accustomed to seeing pictures in the media and stories on the news about immigrants from Latin America and refugees from Syria fleeing violence and destruction in their own countries, trying to make their way to a safe place. We have also seen the reactions of people who want to keep them away from their countries, who fail to welcome the stranger and the helpless children. Have we forgotten Jesus’ call to comfort the homeless and the stranger? “They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations . . . to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the LORD.” In the three readings for this day, we are told that we are to welcome these strangers, to welcome the discipline of the Lord, which leads to peace, and to “strive to enter through the narrow gate” into the glory of God’s own homeland, the reign of God. Praise be to Jesus Christ! Now and forever! Since its creation in 1943, the Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland and Polonia has been helping the Church in Poland. In addition to that commitment, the League is reaching out to the Polish-American communities across the U.S. where Polonia is present.

The League’s mission proclaims: “Keeping in mind the future of our Polish-American heritage, we cultivate the gift of unity with the Roman Catholic Church of Poland and we promote a transformed Polonia – informed, united, involved, and active.” Bishop Andrew Wypych, the National Executive Director, encourages you to join the many generous people who support the Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland and Polonia during the annual campaign. The collection takes place on a weekend close to August 26, the feast day of Our Lady of Czestochowa, the patroness of the League. We ask for the intercession of Our Lady of Czestochowa and our beloved St. John Paul the Great. PAGE 12 TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 25, 2019

PIERWSZE CZYTANIE

Iz 66,18–21 Powszechnoœæ zbawienia

Czytanie z Ksiêgi proroka Iza-jasza

To mówi Pan: „Ja znam ich czyny i zamys³y. Przybêdê, by zebraæ moj¹ chwa³ê. Oto S³owo Bo¿e.

PSALM RESPONSORYJNY:

Ps 117,1–2 Ca³emu œwiatu g³oœcie Ewangeliê.

Chwalcie Pana, wszystkie narody, wys³awiajcie Go wszystkie ludy, bo potê¿na nad nami Jego ³aska, a wiernoœæ Pana trwa na wieki.

Ca³emu œwiatu g³oœcie Ewan-geliê.

DRUGIE CZYTANIE

Hbr 12,5–7.11–13 Tego Pan mi³uje, kogo karze

Czytanie z Listu œwiêtego Paw³a Aposto³a do Hebrajczyków

Bracia: Zapomnieliœcie o upomnieniu, które siê zwraca do was, jako do synów: „Synu mój, nie lekcewa¿ karania Pana, nie upadaj na duchu, gdy On ciê doœwiadcza. Bo tego Pan mi³uje, kogo karze, ch³oszcze ka¿dego, którego za syna przyjmuje”. Trwajcie¿ w karnoœci. Bóg obchodzi siê z wami jak z dzieæmi. Jaki¿ to bowiem syn, którego by ojciec nie karci³?

Alleluja, Alleluja, Alleluja

EWANGELIA

£k 13,22–30 Królestwo Bo¿e dostêpne dla wszystkich narodów

S³owa Ewangelii wed³ug œwiêtego £ukasza

Jezus nauczaj¹c, szed³ przez miasta i wsie, i odbywa³ sw¹ podró¿ do Jerozolimy. Raz ktoœ Go zapyta³: „Panie, czy tylko nieliczni bêd¹ zbawieni?”. On rzek³ do nich: „Usi³ujcie wejœæ przez ciasne drzwi; gdy¿ wielu, powiadam wam, bêdzie chcia³o wejœæ, a nie bêd¹ mogli. Skoro Pan domu wstanie i drzwi zamknie, wówczas stoj¹c na dworze, zaczniecie ko³ataæ do drzwi i wo³aæ: »Panie, otwórz nam«; lecz On wam odpowie: »Nie wiem, sk¹d jesteœcie«. Wtedy zaczniecie mówiæ: »Przecie¿ jadaliœmy i piliœmy z Tob¹, i na ulicach naszych naucza³eœ«. Lecz On rzecze: »Powiadam wam, nie wiem, sk¹d jesteœcie. Odst¹pcie ode Mnie wszyscy dopuszczaj¹cy siê niesprawiedliwoœci«. Tam bêdzie p³acz i zgrzytanie zêbów, gdy ujrzycie Abrahama, Izaaka i Jakuba, i wszystkich proroków w królestwie Bo¿ym, a siebie samych precz wyrzuconych.
