Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, September 1, 2019 Dear friends in Christ, Today’s Gospel, like our current Pope, often talks about the beauty of service — as opposed to striving for more honor, money, or a higher position in this life. As I look at the Bible readings for this Sunday, I am reminded of the numerous volunteers here who make so many good things happen — including our monthly Pasta Night. Such community gatherings do not happen by magic, but rather when committed people say: “This is something I can do! Bringing people together after Saturday night Mass is a lovely thing, and I can help by picking up the pasta, setting up the tables, organizing the volunteers, preparing the desserts, pouring water and lemonade and wine for the guests who have trouble walking. I can’t make it by six, but I can take part, and then help clean up. I can do this!” It’s not a highfalutin kind of ministry, but rather a work of hospitality and graciousness that makes such a difference for those who gather: at our most recent Pasta Night, a young man from our parochial school stepped up to assist, and many of the older parishioners were so touched by his kindness and courtesy.
Jesus said: “Every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Then he said to the host who invited him, “When you hold a lunch or a dinner,
do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors,
in case they may invite you back and you have repayment. Rather, when you hold a banquet,
invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you.
For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” (Luke 14:11-14)
If you want to do something special for God and God’s people, please consider contacting Diana Rittenhouse at the rectory (415-937-5524 — [email protected]) and asking about the Sunday morning ministry of making doughnuts, coffee and orange juice available after the 9:00am or 11:00am Masses. Check in with her about what it means to become part of the monthly Pasta Night team, or what other opportunities might appeal to you here in your parish community. We need more altar servers, lectors, and more people willing to take the bag lunches for the homeless from here to San Rafael. We need more people to support the parish financially, so we can stay in the black and pay our bills — such as the major costs we had over the summer for the clearing of trees and brush behind the church and school. We all need to realize that our talents and blessings can blossom when shared with others, especially in the service of Jesus as part of our identity as Catholic Christians.

Caring for the Earth
Pope Saint John Paul II was clear about our duty to protect the environment: “Equally worrying is the ecological question which accompanies the problem of consumerism and which is closely connected to it. In his desire to have and to enjoy rather than to be and to grow, man consumes the resources of the earth and his own life in an excessive and disordered way.” (1991 encyclical, Centesimus Annus) This responsibility and obligation were also part of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, published under his authority:
“2415 The seventh commandment enjoins respect for the integrity of creation. Animals, like plants and inanimate beings, are by nature destined for the common good of past, present, and future humanity. Use of the mineral, vegetable, and animal resources of the universe cannot be divorced from respect for moral imperatives. Man's dominion over inanimate and other living beings granted by the Creator is not absolute; it is limited by concern for the quality of life of his neighbor, including generations to come; it requires a religious respect for the integrity of creation.”
Saint Hilary School News Saint Hilary School is proud to be a parish school and share space with our Church! The school morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups are not for the faint of heart. During
the first week of school, parking is a challenge and we apologize for the chaos! We have 50+ new families who park and walk their children to their new classes to ease their child’s transition. For the safety of our students and parishioners, we have specific traffic procedures for all to follow:
School starts at 8:00 AM Monday through Friday. Kindergarten dismissal is 2:00 PM Elementary and Junior High dismissal is 3:05 PM
During morning drop- off and afternoon pick-up, the traffic flow is one-way only. Parents drop-off and pick-up in front of the school gym.
All traffic exits through the upper Rock Hill school gate.
The five spaces in front of the church are reserved exclusively for parishioners and visitors to the rectory.
The parking spaces around the fountain may be used by parents but to be cleared before 8:30 AM for daily mass use.
The parking lot becomes the children’s play ground during the day. The school main gate closes at 8:45 AM.
If you have parked behind the school gate, please walk to pedestrian gate and press access gate. The school office will open the gate for you. Please exit through main gate towards the
fountain during regular school hours. The speed limit on campus is 10 mph at all times.
If you have any issues with parking, traffic flow or gate access, please contact the school front office. Have a blessed Labor day weekend.
Prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament is a most personal
interaction with THE REAL PRESENCE of Our Lord.
Chapel open daily 7:30am – 6:00pm. Email [email protected] for a
tour of the chapel. Bring a friend to pray with you.
The St. Hilary Tiger says:
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
