PAGE 2 SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE CHURCH BULLETIN :: FEBRUARY 17, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR

As we continue through the month of February, the weather has been a little neurotic. We've gone from temperatures just above zero, to the fifties and back down again. It certainly makes life interesting, to say the least. It also has resulted in sickness for some, especially the children. That's because we are never sure how to dress. Spring is not too far away! We know that because pitchers and catchers have already reported for spring training! Today's Gospel is the Lucan version of the Beatitudes. They differ from Matthew's because there are less of them, Matthew's version has a few more. While Matthew’s version delivers them on a mountain, reflecting Moses' Ten Commandments, Luke delivers his on level ground. No matter the setting, the Beatitudes are a reminder of the Lord's call to service, care and concern for one another. For the writers of the Gospels like Luke, it wasn't enough just to say that one believes in Jesus. That belief had to become real in the way one speaks and acts toward others. Jesus has given us all an example of how to reflect the presence of God in our lives. It begins by listening and paying attention to the message of the Scriptures. Then allowing that message to permeate our being, so that it becomes a part of who we are and how we live. Jesus showed us how to care for each other, and he expected the apostles to do the same. We accepted this responsibility when we were baptized, and hopefully, as we grow into adulthood, we understand this responsibility much better and are able to reflect the message through how we live our lives. Sometimes, it is not easy to follow the example of the Lord. Circumstance and the events of every day life can easily distract us from accomplishing our mission. Yet, each day we need to renew our commitment to the Lord and to one another that we will be the best example of Jesus. It becomes somewhat easier when we realize that each of us adds something different and unique to the building of God's Kingdom on earth. This doesn't mean that one is better than the other, but that each is different and this allows us to add something unique to the lives of the people we touch each day. We accomplish this in ways we may not even realize. It happens naturally because we understand the impact that Jesus has on our life as a reflection of our faith in the Son of God. There is a great deal of satisfaction in knowing that we have helped others experience the wonder of Jesus, as we continue to grow in grace, wisdom and his love. HAPPY PRESIDENTS DAY!!

PARISH SCHOOL NEWS Mrs. Caroline Ponterio, Principal

Our Art teacher, Mrs. Traci Burns, spent the last month working with students on art selections representing ancient Greece, China and Egypt and transformed our second floor into an amazing display. Literally, from floor to ceiling, the art creations adorn our hallway, from a 3-D sarcophagus and Canopic jars to kites and parasols hanging from the ceiling. There are firecrackers, King Tut, Medusa and the Great Wall of China! Let’s journey back in time…

Ancient GREECE! Kindergartners re-created urns the Greeks used during the Olympics. Many of the urns were used to hold oils

and water. They had mosaic designs of runners and other athletes. Eighth graders used recycled materials and papier-mâché to create sculptures of Greek Gods. Each student

chose a God to sculpt and wrote a brief biography. First graders made laurels using green paper in different shades. The laurels were a symbol of power, victory

and loyalty and were worn by athletes, nobles and scholars.

Ancient CHINA! Our students in PreK-3 created koi fish kites using paper they cut straight slits into. Then they decorated

with cre pe paper and googly eyes. PreK-4 created faces for Chinese water dragons using paper plates, cre pe paper and paint dots.

Fifth graders crafted Chinese water dragons that are beautiful and powerful. They were molded, plastered, then glittered and glammed. They also drew their own temple from ancient China. Temples were aesthetically and structurally fabulous. Students drew and designed their temples based on old architecture.

Sixth graders drew glorious pictures of a traditionally garbed Chinese woman keeping out of the sun or rain using a parasol.

The Chinese invented the parasol in 3500 BC. It was used to repel rain and to protect the user from harsh sunlight. They were built from oil paper and bamboo. Our third graders used paper and plastic water balloon fillers to create their own parasols which hang from the ceiling.

Seventh graders studied the Chinese zodiac. Using papier-ma che and paint, each student created a sculpture of one of the zodiac animals and wrote down traits of people born in those years. 2019 is the “Year of the Pig.”

Ancient EGYPT! Second graders painted fantastic sunsets using warm colors, then created three-dimensional pyramids and

dromedary camels to complete their sunset landscape. Fourth graders sculpted their own Canopic jars. Canopic jars are covered urns that were used during the

mummification process and were frequently carved from limestone or made from clay. Our 4th graders crafted papier-mâché and then painted their jars.

LIFE IN THE TIME OF JESUS

As Christians, we have chosen to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Therefore, it is natural to become more familiar with the land, time frame and places where Jesus lived and walked. The more that we know about His life and the country of His origin, the more this knowledge

allows us not only to deepen our relationship with God, but also the more real our own love can become.

MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

2nd Collection February 23/24, 2019

Central & Eastern Europe Collection

In Eastern Europe, in the Caucasus region, the small country of Georgia nestles between Armenia and Russia. In 1921 Georgia was taken over by the Red Army and became one of the first countries to be incorporated into the Soviet Union. After 70 years of oppression under the Soviet regime, the Georgian people declared independence in 1991, and the Church entered a new era of freedom. With your support for the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe (CCEE), the Church in Georgia has worked through the network of parishes to expand medical services to respond to the needs of these remote villages. Many of our brothers and sisters who live in these villages now have access to qualified nursing services, doctors, and medication. Your generosity is balm for the wounds of an abandoned people. You are bringing the light of Christ and strength of his healing so they know that they are not forgotten.

Thank you for your generosity!
