I’ve lost track of the Catholic trivia. I’ll have to get it back on track: “Catholic” means “Universal”. One of the four marks of the true Church: One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic. Let’s go over these. We say this at the Creed at Mass every Sunday. The Church is One because it is the Body of Christ. By our Baptism we are made beloved children of God and members of Christ Body which is the Church. To build each other up on earth by following Christ’s commandment to love God above all and each other as He loved us. The Church is Holy. This is something which we wonder at. Individually we may not think of ourselves as holy. In fact, those people who I think of as very holy think of themselves as sinners. Saint Mother Teresa was an example of someone who considered herself the chiefest and worse of sinners even though everybody else considered her a living saint. The point is that Christ is holy and so the Church is made holy by his presence and by His grace we strive to be holy. The Church is Catholic. It is universal. Just look around on Sundays at Mass. There may be people from all continents, except maybe Antarctica. That is universal. That is a specific mark of the Roman Catholic Church because it is not a national Church, yet it is made up of many nations. Jesus told the Apostles: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Mt 28:19-20. It is through the preaching and missionary work of the Apostles that the Church is Catholic as well as one and holy. The successors of the Apostles, the Bishops are a direct link to the Apostles and the teaching and promises of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Built on the foundation of the Holy Apostles, the Church is Apostolic. By the way, St Peter’s remains are directly under the main altar at St Peter’s Basilica on the Vatican Hill. At the Church of the Holy Apostles the relics of St Philip and St James the Less (our patron) are found. I had the opportunity to visit the crypt where our patron is buried and I prayed for all of our parishioners and our community.

Parish Intention of the Month As we begin this year with the love of Christ in our hearts, we pray that we may see each person

we meet as Jesus sees them.
