A JOURNEY OF FAITH

On Pentecost Sunday, June 9, our newly baptized and confirmed adults, along with their sponsors, family and team members celebrated the conclusion of our parish RCIA program for 2018-2019 with a communion breakfast in our Parish Retreat House. Following breakfast, Fr. Anthony presided at Mass during which our candidates were sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation by our pastor, Msgr. David Hubba.

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY ~ JUNE 16, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Not long ago I met a priest who was on the verge of visiting all fifty states. I’m not even close to that accomplishment. One of the states I’ve never been to is Ohio. In fact, I

always worry about correctly spelling Cleveland and Cincinnati when I have to. Ohio comes to mind this Father’s Day because of some things Ohio residents have said about fathers. Some time ago a child from the state said something the Christopher News Notes published: “A father is someone who will eat a whole pretend meal from your doll dish.” And a wife from Ohio had these thoughts about the man she was married to, which the old “Ann Landers” advice column shared:

My husband is a laborer. He leaves the house at 7 a.m. and puts in a long, hard day’s work. If he can get overtime he grabs it. When he comes home at night he paints the house, fixes whatever needs it (and something always does), keeps our car running and helps with the kids. At the end of the week he hands me his paycheck and apologizes because it isn’t more. He never complains when I give him ground meat in 11 different forms. At night when he puts his arms around me and pulls me close I feel that whatever I’ve done for him during the day wasn’t enough. Love and marriage are like a circle. The more you do for a man the more he loves you. The more he loves you the more he tries to do for you. The more he tries to do for you the more you love him. And so it goes. It’s so simple. Why don’t more people figure it out?

If everyone from Ohio is as wise as these two of its citizens, it must be a very agreeable place to live. God is someone who is constantly summoning us to our better selves. He has plans for our betterment and for the well-being of humanity at large. To accomplish them, he calls us to serve him. And he has asked men who are fathers both to pass on the gift of life and to nurture it in their children, so they can grow up to take their place in the Lord’s family and in the working out of his will. It is a major responsibility and a difficult one to handle well. No one does it perfectly. But there are many blessings for those who try their best, including a great deal of satisfaction and pride at seeing their families grow, and an enormous amount of joy in the secure love of a family that sincerely tries to live according to God’s ways. May it be a vocation and a joy that all of the fathers of our parish delight in.

Msgr. David Hubba

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI—JUNE 23

June 23rd is the feast of Corpus Christi— the Body and Blood of Christ. It is a feast to recall the institution of the Eucharist on Holy Thursday. Its origin is attributed to

St. Juliana of Liege, Belgium, an Augustinian canoness whose visions from 1209 onward caused her to urge adoption of this feast. Pope Urban IV was entrusted with the investigation of Juliana’s visions and inserted the feast of Corpus Christi into the calendar of the Church in 1264. He decreed its celebration throughout the entire Church and commissioned St. Thomas Aquinas to write the liturgical office, including scripture, hymns and prayers for the feast. St. Thomas composed Pange Lingua (whose last two verses include the familiar Tantum Ergo) for this feast day. To quote Urban in his papal bull Transiturus, possibly the most beautiful document on the Eucharist composed by a pope, “Transcending even the fullness of generosity, he [Christ] gave himself as our food.” Of the Feast of Corpus Christi, Pope Urban said, “This feast must shine with a special festivity and honor so that whatever of solemnity is perhaps omitted in other Masses might be supplied in this feast with diligent devotion.” A prominent aspect of the feast is the outdoor procession which follows the Mass. It includes Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Scripture readings, songs, prayers and meditations. We give

(continued above)

special thanks and praise to God for the sublime gift of his Body and Blood that Christ gave us at the Last Supper Since the 14th century the monstrance, a vessel used to also display the relics of saints, has been used for this exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, the “greatest treasure” of the Church. In Alpine countries Corpus Christi became a “dressing-up” day and included the participation of the guilds, schools, authorities and the

court, revealing it as a late medieval expression of a united Christendom. My childhood memories of Corpus Christi processions in northern Bavaria, Germany where I was born are of throngs of people in town nicely dressed, the Boy Scouts carrying colorful banners and candles, girls in pretty dresses carrying flowers and strewing petals on the ground. There were musicians leading the people in singing church songs for the occasion, the recital of prayer and Scripture, the men holding up the canopy under

which our priest carried the monstrance that followed the altar boys with candles and incense. Oh the fragrance of the incense and flowers mixed with the fresh warm summer air—such sweet memories! Along with our Pastor Msgr. Hubba, I invite my fellow parishioners to participate in our own Corpus Christi procession on the Saint Joseph parish grounds immediately after the noon Mass NEXT SUNDAY, June 23rd. We hope to see you there to honor our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. God bless you.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth… .” (JOHN 16:13)

Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to help us know and live the truth. To prepare ourselves, we need to open our hearts to

receive this gift before we can give it. Develop a daily prayer routine. Talk and listen to the Holy Spirit. This is best done in silence, when we can hear his response.
