    Dear Parishioners,

What is that perfect gift that you have been always waiting and hoping for? Perhaps you may have received it this Christmas. Or, maybe you are still holding out for that gift to be given to you. Often we associate a gift with some tangible item: New game console, car, jewelry, handbag, shoes or the like. But are those the only types of gifts we can receive—tangible, or is there something perhaps better? I strongly believe that there are better gifts that can be given instead of those tangible items that we will eventually become tired with and want and hope for the next edition. The gift I am thinking of is the gift that moves us to a deep encounter with a friend, family member, spouse, child and/or significant other.

I think the above mentioned gifts, not the tangible ones, but the other ones, have really become the source of what we deeply appreciate these days. The gift of relationship. Our Advent Series focused on our relationship with the Triune God, others and the liturgy. These relationships afford us the opportunity to be closely united with God and through that close bond, we are then deeply connected with those around us! This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. I believe the Gospel for this solemnity sheds light to the gifts that I am speaking about. Simeon was given a precious and desirable gift namely; he would not see death until he saw the Christ. Simeon held on closely to that gift of “promise.” But also, that gift of promise was a true gift of an encounter with the Messiah! He was able to form that relationship that you and me long for with our Personal God. We can experience that deep encounter and relationship with God by the way we welcome and appreciate those relationships in our lives. The gift of love from family, friends, spouse, children, significant other and pets. These gifts are better than any tangible item. For the love that comes from family, spouses and friends never get old. Instead, they grow deeper! Perhaps in the new year we can begin to reconcile those relationships that are in need of reconciliation and those relationships that we need to deepen. As we prepare to welcome in the new year, my staff and I wish you and your loved ones a Blessed, Healthy and Happy New Year! In the Good Shepherd,

    Fr. Robert Mema

Christmas Carols! A “carol” is a song with Christmas-themed lyrics. The word derives either from the French carole or the Latin carula, both of which mean a circular dance. The first known Christmas hymns were Latin chants traced to 4th century Rome. But since most people didn’t understand Latin, by the 13th century vernacular Christmas songs were being performed outside the church, telling the Nativity story. Carols were also sung from house to house, by “wassailers” who offered a drink from their wassail bowl in exchange for gifts and treats. During the Reformation, Protestants began singing carols inside

churches. In the 19th century, the publication of Christmas music books helped widen their popular appeal even more, as carols were sung in homes around the Christmas tree and hearth. And as carols became more and more popular, fewer people wanted to carry the wassail bowl with them, so “wassailing” evolved into “caroling.” Of course, this year almost no one is caroling in person. So today we’re offering a virtual 30-minute caroling party. Grab your eggnog or hot chocolate, your Christmas cookies, and at 4:00 pm, join us online! Our website will provide a link to a Zoom meeting where you can watch and listen. If you want to see the lyrics to sing-along at home, there will also be a link for a Watch2Gether room you can log into to see the Karaoke video with the lyrics. And even though we’ll only be able to hear one person singing at a time (don’t worry, you won’t be on the spot to be a soloist!) we’ll be able to communicate with each other via chat in the Zoom room. See you then! Mr. Steven Vaughan, Director of Music Ministry - [email protected] - (718) 357-8888, x12

  • ST. KEVIN MISSION TO NICARAGUA

The major funding for the Mustard Seed Communities in Nicaragua usually comes from the college and

parish groups who raise a minimum of $10,000 prior to their mission. Over the last three years, these

groups have been prevented from visiting Nicaragua because of political unrest and the recent Covid-19

outbreak. But the critical needs of the infants, children, and young people with a range of developmental

    challenges persist.

Please consider participating in our parish’s virtual Mission by making a donation to support the residents. Your gift will directly support their care. Any donation, small or large, would be deeply appreciated.

Please make your check payable to “Mustard Seed Communities,” and leave it at the rectory or place it in one of the collection receptacles in the church. We are grateful for whatever you are able to do.
