  • SEEING THROUGH

Today's readings invite us to look more deeply, to catch a glimpse of Divine Reality hidden within the “stuff” of life. God challenged the elderly Abram and his wife to leave home for a land that God would show them. Their eyes would see the land, but only God could “show” it as a divine gift. Paul reminded Timothy that God’s grace had always been available, but in Jesus Christ was made “manifest.” Jesus called Peter, James, and John up the mountain and was “transfigured” for a moment, the radiance of God shining through. Then, just as abruptly, the three looked up . . . and saw only Jesus. During Lent we’re invited to “see through” to God’s presence in the stuff of life: prowling the supermarket, waiting in traffic, arguing with the kids, cleaning the bathtub. We wouldn’t really have to “do” anything, if we could only glimpse divine love supporting us, holding us together. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

. . y sólo vieron a Jesús.

In my last letter I reminded everyone that this Lenten season is the time we can use to become closer to God, to thank Him for the great sacrifice He has made for us. He died for us for our salvation. This Lenten season is the time we can learn more about God and His Church and to grow in our spiritual life. One of the ways we can grow and be in communion with God is by understanding, celebrating and loving the Mass even more. Our Mass is a Eucharistic Celebration. The Holy Eucharist is the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is His Holy Presence with us in our modern Times. It is Jesus Christ Guiding us today and tomorrow to the end of times. The celebration of the Holy Eucharist has six essential movements. (1) The Gathering—As Christians we gather together to worship Jesus. Even though the priest is the one acting in the person of Christ; Jesus presides invisibly over the celebration. The Mass begins with a procession and music. It prepares us to begin our full and active participation throughout the whole celebration. (2) Liturgy of the Word—In the Liturgy of the Word God speaks to us in a living presence of today. This is where Jesus calls us into a loving union with Him. Our faith is a dialogue of salvation. In every liturgy there are readings from God’s word, the Holy Scriptures. The first reading and the responsorial Psalm are from the Old Testament, the second reading is from the New Testament; which is followed by the Gospel. If we really concentrate on the liturgy it gives us a better understanding of what God is trying to teach us. The Gospel is followed by a homily; this is when the priest conveys to the assembly what the true interpretation of the readings mean. The priest then relates these words of God into the reality of His Holy presence in today’s world and encourages the faithful to live out these words in their day to day lives. (3) Presentation of the Offerings—At this time a collection for the parish’s needs and the needs of others who are in need throughout the world is done. Normally there is a procession with the bread and wine and the collection to the altar. It is offered to God as our sacrifice. The bread, wine and collection represents the blessings that we have received from God and now with gratitude we present them and return them back to God so that He continues blessing us. During this time we should be fully participating in the singing of our joyful sacrifice. Once the gifts are offered the music stops, this is when the altar and gifts are prepared. This should be a time of sacred silence. This is the time that the priest prepares himself and the people prepare themselves for their self offering of their words, deeds and lives as a sacrifice to God. I know that there are many in our community that are already familiar with the Mass but it never hurts to be reminded of its reverence and sacredness. There are times that some of us become distracted with our busy lives that we lose focus on the true celebration. We sometimes get so involved with our routines that this sacred celebration becomes just another routine for us. It is our closer relationship with the Lord, our Communion with God. Let us actively and fully participate in this reality that God is. Next Week I will continue with the explanation of the other movements of the Mass.

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
