Wearedesigningaprocesstoproduceasimulantthatmimicsthesoilonthemoon.Thesoil(regolith)onthesurfaceofthemoonishighlyabrasive,sothetechnologysenttothemoondegradesquickly.Thisisacriticalareaoflunarresearchthatiscurrentlynotbeingadequatelypursued.OursimulantisbeinggradedbyNASAtodeterminehowwellitemulatesthelunarsoil.

Title:CharacterizationofthelandscapeofwinterandspringwheatsundercoldstressPlantsrespondtochangesintheirenvironment,suchasabioticstress,byalteringtheexpressionlevelsofawidearrayofgenes.Weconductedhigh‐throughputgenesequencingtoidentifydifferentiallyexpressedgenesinwinterandspringwheatinresponsetocoldshockstress.Wemappedourdatatoareferencegenome,annotatedthedataset,andgeneratedgeneexpressioncounts.Weestimateddifferentialgeneexpressionandranstatisticalanalyses,identifying1521genesthatwereup‐regulatedandexhibitedanincreasedexpressionundercoldstressinthewinterwheat.Wealsoidenti ied928genesthatweresubsequentlydown‐regulatedinthewinterwheat.Moreover,weidenti iedmanygenesthatweredifferentiallyexpressedinthewinterwheatthatdidnot luctuateinthespringwheatinresponsetocoldstresstreatment.Thedataelucidatedfromthisstudycantranslatetodownstreamapplicationsthataimtoexpandcropsustainabilityinsub‐optimalenvironmentalconditions.

Thispaperlooksattheimpactofaconceptknownas“fridging”,oncomicculturebothinthepastandpresent.Fridg‐ingwaspopularizedasatermin1994,bycomicauthorGailSimone.Simonenoticedanalarmingtrendoffemalecharactersbeingkilledasaplotdevice,orwhentheyweredeemednolongeruseful.Itwasveryimportantthatthispaperbewrittenbecausethereisnotcurrentlyverymuchacademicworkonthisconcept.Fridgingisverydangerous,inthatitbecomesac‐ceptableifitisnotchallenged.Itcannotbechallengedifreaderscannotidentifywhattheyareseeing.Oncesexismandfridg‐ingincomicbooksisidenti ied,itcanbefought.Muchoftheresearchforthisthesiswasdoneusingtheexactcomicbookswherefridgingoccurs,withsomebackgroundresearchonthehistoryofcomicbooksandsexisminotherpopularculturegenres.

Title:EffectsofsilvernanoparticlesonthegerminationandgrowthofKaleSilvernanoparticles(AgNPs)aredemonstratedaseffectivebiocides,andthustheyareoneofthemostcommonlyappliednanomaterials.Despitetheirmanyuses,potentialrunoffofAgNPsraisesconcernsforenvironmentalsafety.WhilesomestudiesreportonthepositiveeffectsofAgNPs,therearealsostudiesthatindicatenegativeoutcomes.Theeffectsvaryde‐pendingonthespeciesofplantsandtheAgNPs’characteristics.These indingsemphasizetheneedtofurtherunderstandtheeffectsofAgNPsoncropplantsasthedemandforlargercropyieldsincreaseswithourpopulation.Cappingagentsarebe‐lievedtohelpstabilizeAgNPs.Eachcappingagentisassociatedwithitsowncharacteristicsthatwillplayaroleinthesize,toxicity,aggregation,anddissolutionofAgNPs.Inthisstudy,weaimtofurtherinvestigatethecharacteristic‐basedeffectsofAgNPsbyobservingtheeffectsofdifferentcappingagentsonthegerminationandgrowthofkale(Brassicaoleracea).

Title:Reducing the Magnitude of Soil Erosion Using Bacterial Biofilms Produced by Bacillus sub lis and Bacillus cereus
Erosionisanoccurrencethatoftenhappensasaresultofwind,rain,water low,andothernaturalagents.Inare‐aspronetosuchcases,especially in thePaci icNorthwestwhererain isacommonoccurrence,erosioncanbedamagingandrepairscanbecostly.Ourstudydeterminedwhetherbacterialbio ilmssecretedbyBacillusspecieshavethepotentialtoreducethemagnitudeofsoilerosioncausedbyheavyrainfall.Soilmoundsinoculatedwithbio ilm‐producing bacteria exhibited the lowest amounts of eroded soil, while soil mounds without bio ilm‐producingbacteriaexhibitedthehighestamounts.Theseresultssupportthehypothesisthatbio ilmscanreducetheeffectsoferosionbyholdingloosesoilstogether.
