Twenty‐second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 1, 2019

Welcome to St. Mary’s!

Here are a few of the ways you can get involved in our Parish…

Liturgical Ministries – The most important activity that we do as Catholics is the worship of Almighty God in the Mass. Lectors proclaim the Word of God in the scripture readings. Extraordinary Ministers of Communion assist the priest and deacon with the distribution of the Eucharist. Altar Servers assist the priest at the altar and in other liturgical rites. Parish Choir/Instrumentalists – Our parish choirs, under the direction of Arthur Rishi and Warren Hutchison, provide support to the sung prayer of the liturgy. The Choir meets before Mass each Sunday to rehearse. Please con-sider joining the choir or share your musical skill by playing an instrument. Parish Religious Education – Our Religious Education provides faith formation for students in Kindergarten up to High School. Parishioners volunteer as catechists/teachers in the program, which runs for one hour on Sunday mornings. Saint Mary’s Elementary School – Our parish school educates over 230 students, beginning with early childhood program up to the 8th grade. Our teachers and staff are highly qualified professionals, and the goal of our school is to form young people who love God and their neighbor. Saint Vincent de Paul Society – Our outreach to those in need is coordinated by the members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. They organize food drives at Thanksgiving and a gift program for poor and homeless at Christmas and throughout the year. Our conference works closely with Boston’s Health Care for the Homeless Program. Parish Evangelization Committee – This group helps to coordinate events that help to spread the Good News. From the annual parish BBQ, to special seasonal devotions during Lent and Easter, they are always looking for ways to share the love of God and the joy of following Him. Parish Social Committee – This new outreach coordinates the social times that take place following Sunday Mass. Volunteers are needed to prepare coffee, bring a baked good to share, or to set up the area for times of fellowship following the Sunday Masses. With the renovation of the lower church, our hope is to offer more social opportunities for parishioners throughout the year. Youth and Young Adult Ministry – Brookline is a very young community, and this is reflected in our congregation. Our Youth and Young Adult Ministries provided a strong and supportive community in which to grow in faith, surrounded by friends who share your values and convictions. In addition to devotional and prayer activities, there are social activities and opportunities to learn more about our faith throughout the year. Saint Mary’s Mother’s Prayer Group – Once a month a group of moms gathers together with their children for a time of prayer and fellowship. It’s a wonderful opportunity for new moms to connect with other moms, and for children to make church friends! Social Justice Committee – As a parish we are committed to living the Gospel and working for peace and justice. This committee comes up with ways that we can better promote the Church’s social teaching. Parish Bereavement Ministry – “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” This ministry seeks to support those who are coping with the loss of a loved one through weekly meetings of faith and fellowship. Alcoholics Anonymous/Recovery Ministry – A.A. groups meet regularly at St. Mary’s and provide individuals with a community of recovery and support. Parish Council/Finance Council – These councils assist the Pastor in his leadership role. The Parish council is made up of a representative group of the parish, and the Finance Council advises the pastor on the financial matters of the parish. Are you new to the parish? Is there a ministry you were involved with elsewhere that isn’t listed here?? Contact our pastor and let him know if you are interested in starting something new here at St. Mary’s!

It is an encounter with Jesus Christ in a small community of the Church, in order to deepen your own faith and to strengthen your ability to be a witness of Christ in the world. The Cursillo weekends run from Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon, and are held at the Campion Center in Weston. There is a women’s Cursillo weekend October 24-27, and a men’s weekend December 5-8. Supporting the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust

The Annual Celebration of the Priesthood Dinner to support the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust will be held on Thursday, September 19 at the Seaport World Trade Center. St. Mary’s will be reserving a table and tickets are $350 per person. Please contact the Parish Office if you would like to attend. This year’s event will feature remarks by His Eminence Cardinal Seán O’Malley. The Celebration of the Priesthood dinner attracts more than 1,500 people annually and offers us the unique opportunity to show our support and appreciation for the work our priests do every day to build stronger communities throughout our Archdiocese. Please consider supporting our priests by purchasing a ticket to the dinner. Call our Parish Office at 617-734-0444 or stop by for more information.

Clergy Health and Retirement Trust Across Greater Boston, we are blessed with priests who enliven and enrich not only our parishes but our surrounding communities. Through their ministry, they work tirelessly to bring Christ’s love to all those who need it. Truly, the strength and vibrancy of our parishes and broader communities depend on the health and well-being of our priests. Please support our priests by making a gift to the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust al clergytrust.org or by giving generously to the upcoming special collection on September 14/15. This dedicated second collection is a primary source of funding to care for our priests. Your generosity is very much appreciated. Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust—an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.
