BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

The Feast of St Francis of Assisi is October 4th. St. Francis is known throughout the world for his love of peace and the beauty of God’s crea-tions. One of his particular loves was

that of animals. It has been a long honored tradition of our Church to bless animals at his feast day. On Saturday, October 6th, at 2:00 pm, those who wish to have their pets blessed should bring them to the front steps of the Church on Goethals Avenue.

From the Pastor’s Desk…

In today’s Gospel, Jesus clarifies that any good deed done for Christ’s sake is doing so to Jesus

Himself. It doesn’t matter how small the good act is. Nor does it matter if the one who does so is

not part of the community of believers, If the good deed is done to one who represents the Lord,

Jesus rewards these as done to Him.

Jesus also instructs us to strengthen and protect the faith of the “little ones”, the ordinary People

of God, and not be a source of scandal or cause them to sin. He warns that “Whoever causes

one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone

were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” (Mk 9:41)

Jesus requires us to be ready to sacrifice to avoid sin or cause others to sin, to the extent of

“cutting off” or giving up our “hands, feet, and eyes”. This means carving out that part of our-

selves which obstructs our path to salvation, namely, any thoughts, words and actions leading us

to sin.

Sin is a decision to do something God has forbidden (sin of commission) or not to do something

God has commanded (sin of omission). To sin is to turn away from God, the sole purpose of our

creation and our existence. There are seven main paths that can lead us away from the Lord.

These are called the Seven Capital Sins: Pride, Covetousness, Lust, Anger, Gluttony, Envy

and Laziness. May God help us to avoid sin in all its forms!

In the second reading, St. James challenges us to exercise responsible stewardship over our

wealth. Possessing wealth or power should not be a source of pride nor urge us to desire more.

Whatever God has given us is to be shared with others, especially the poor and less fortunate

members of Christ’s Body. Loving God in them is loving and possessing God Himself. He alone

suffices.

Farewell to Deacon Joe Catanello Deacon Joe Catanello will move to Florida in mid-October. He served at St. Nick’s for the last

seven years. He was well liked and touched our parish family in so many ways. He gave down to

earth homilies and was an inspiration to the Faith Formation Classes. We will definitely miss

him!

Please join me in thanking Deacon Joe on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at the 12:15 PM Mass.

Light refreshments will follow in Tolentine Hall.

God bless you!

Fr. John Francis

We also have begun the Catechesis of the Good Shep-herd program for children 3, 4, and 5 years old. It is a beauti-ful program based on Maria Montessori’s method of educa-tion. They will not be bored because there is a great deal of involvement of the children in different learning activities. Give it a try; I am sure they will be happy! These classes are also in the Faith Formation Center at 8:45am on Sundays.

The RCIA sessions for adults have begun. They are held on Sundays at 10:30 am in the Faith Formation Center. Doubtful?

How can you fail, if Our Lady is on your side?

You know Our Lord never refuses his mother. Remember, Mary said, “Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2:5)

It’s good to have the company of the Mother of God in your heart and the company of your Legionary brothers and sisters on

your Faith journey.

What is the Legion of Mary? The Legion of Mary is an international, worldwide apostolate, , founded in 1921, the largest lay organization in the Roman

Catholic Church, comprised of men and women of all ages. Its members come together in fellowship to pray, to meditate, and

to bring Christ to others in a weekly two-hour commitment to Legionary work under the guidance of the Mother of God.

Prayer, True Devotion, and Good Works.

To Jesus through Mary.

Come and see what we’re about.
