Page 2 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends in Christ,

This weekend, our first reading, from the book of Sirach, a biblical wisdom literature which contains a series of wise sayings from Jeshua Ben Sira, a wise Jewish elder, calls our attention to the power of Choice and Freedom. Choice and freedom are two very important characteristics particular to humans per se. In other words, other creatures don’t have the power of choice and the freedom as humans.

Every choice we make has consequences. It could range from the choice of what to eat or wear, where to live, who to associate with etc. We also have higher choices in matters of faith and morals. Human choices have moral consequences whether we intend them or not. The book of Sirach gives a clue to our power of choice and the consequences that will follow them: “If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will serve you; He has set before you, fire and water…life and death…good and evil.” Whichever humans

choose shall be given him. There was a time in our lives when parents and or those in authority gave us guidelines to follow because they saw those to be good and chose them for us. At a certain point of maturity, we have to make a choice to follow or not follow what we have been told. The same is applicable to us in our life of discipleship. We must get to a point that we have to make our own choices. God respects our freedom and will not force us. But we need to remember that whatever we choose has consequences, now or later.

God gives us directives of making good choices in His commandments but He does not force, that is to say, He respects our freedom. He gives us the freedom to choose Him and His law for according to the Psalmist, “Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord.” Psalm 119. This is the mystery of the kingdom revealed to the little ones, that is, those who allow the Lord to be the leader of their lives.

In the Gospel, Jesus the great law giver, reminds us of the law which must inform our choices as free beings. He tells us that whoever breaks or teaches others to break the commandments will be called least in the kingdom, no place for them, while those who keep the commandment and teach others to do so will inherit the kingdom. His commandment in Matthew 5:17-37, the reading for this weekend, covers killings to anger, name calling, need for reconciliation, sexual immorality, adultery, lust, marriage, divorce and false oaths. We live in a world of constant choices, in personal, family, faith, political and social lives. When we are confronted with the ideals of the world, how do we use our freedom, in good or bad choices? Good choices are in consonance with the law of God and will bring life. Others can only lead to death. Let us pray for the grace to use our freedom and make good choices that will lead to life, here on earth but also in eternity with God. In Christ, Fr. Godwin

Still time to join. Make this a part of your Lenten Journey. Topics, dates and times are finalized for these upcoming sessions. Most begin the week of Feb. 23rd. See page 6 for complete details.

Music Ministry - Pianist/Organist Needed

Do you play the piano? We are in need of a pianist/organist who would be willing to accompany a song leader at approximately 1-2 Masses a month, or be on call as a

substitute. Our hope is that there is someone here from our wonderful parish who is willing to donate their time and talent. Training will be provided.

Please prayerfully consider this opportunity and contact Cecilia Adams, Music Director at 815-385-0025 or [email protected] for more information.

Word of Life

“Prayer is the foundation of all that we do in defense of human life. Our efforts—whether educational, pastoral, or legislative—will be less than fully fruitful if we do not change hearts and if we do not ourselves overcome our own spiritual blindness. Only with prayer—prayer that storms the heavens for justice and mercy, prayer that cleanses our hearts and our souls—will the culture of death that surrounds us today be replaced with a culture of life.

Spiritual Adoption Program—Month 6

Spiritual Adoption Prayer

“Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to protect the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted.” Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen.

I am developing quite beautifully now. At 1 1/2 to 2 pounds and 12 inches long, I am twice as big as I was last month. I am sitting up most of the time to accom-modate the final movement of my internal organs. From 26 weeks, babies exhibit a whole range of typi-cal baby behavior and moods, including scratching, smiling, crying, hiccupping and sucking. Babies born prematurely at this time have a very good chance of surviving. Don’t forget to pray for my mother and me.

“The values of Christianity are unalterable opposed to the modern secular culture of choice.” Pope John Paul II

Saint Peter Damian - Saint of the Day for February 21 (988 – February 22, 1072)

Maybe because he was orphaned and had been treated shabbily by one of his brothers, Peter Damian was very good to the poor. It was ordinary for him to have a poor person or two with him at table and he liked to minister personally to their needs. Peter escaped poverty and the neglect of his own brother when his other brother, who was archpriest of Ravenna, took him under his wing. His brother sent him to good schools and

Peter became a professor. Already in those days, Peter was very strict with himself. He wore a hair shirt under his clothes, fasted rigorously and spent many hours in prayer. Soon, he decided to leave his teaching and give himself completely to pray-er with the Benedictines of the reform of Saint Romuald at Fonte Avellana. Peter was so eager to pray and slept so little that he soon suffered from severe insomnia. He found he had to use some prudence in taking care of himself. When he was not praying, he studied the Bible. The abbot commanded that when he died Peter should succeed him. Abbot Peter founded five other hermitages. He encouraged his brothers in a life of prayer and solitude and wanted nothing more for himself. The Holy See periodically called on him, however, to be a peacemaker or troubleshooter, between two abbeys in dispute or a cleric or government official in some disagreement with Rome. Finally, Pope Stephen IX made Peter the cardinal-bishop of Ostia. He worked hard to wipe out simony—the buying of church offices–and encouraged his priests to observe celibacy and urged even the diocesan clergy to live together and maintain scheduled prayer and religious observance. He wished to restore prim-itive discipline among religious and priests, warning against needless travel, violations of poverty, and too comfortable living. He wrote many letters. Some 170 are extant. We also have 53 of his sermons and seven biographies that he wrote. He pre-ferred examples and stories rather than theory in his writings. The liturgical offices he wrote are evidence of his talent as a stylist in Latin. He asked often to be allowed to retire as cardinal-bishop of Ostia, and finally Pope Alexander II consented. Peter was happy to become once again just a monk, but he was still called to serve as a papal legate. When returning from such an assignment in Ravenna, he was overcome by a fever. With the monks gathered around him saying the Divine Office, he died on February 22, 1072. In 1828, he was declared a Doctor of the Church.

St. Patrick Catholic Church Parish Registration - Do You Need to Register?

ARE YOU: (1) New to the parish; (2) Moving back; (3) Just Married; (4) Attending mass but never officially regis-tered? (5) Even if you grew up in St. Patrick, you (as an adult—18+) need to register independent from your par-ents.

Please do not take your church registration for grant-ed. Attending Mass is not enough; there must be an offi-cial record of your membership in the Parish. Parish reg-istration is essential for many reasons. It becomes im-portant when you or your family members are receiving the Sacraments - First Communion, Baptism, Confirmation and Marriage. Registration is also required for those wish-ing to become a Baptism or Confirmation sponsor. In addi-tion, becoming a member of a parish gives one the identity of belonging to a family—the parish family of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

If you are not officially registered with the parish, please do so as soon as possible. All you have to do is contact the parish office at 815-385-0025 or stop in during office hours and request a registration packet. Registration packets are also available on the parish website at www.stpatrickmchenry.org—just click on Registration at the top of the home page.

Would you like to make a difference in our community this winter but aren’t sure where to give? Every penny of your donations to St. Vincent de Paul through GiveCentral or our

parish poor box assists area families in need. Your gifts of treasure to SvdP are used to purchase food at a significant discount, which is then given to our needy neighbors. Some funds might be sent directly to a utility company to avoid shut-off of services while other funds may pay for gas or needed car repair to allow one of our neighbors to get to work. Your donations allow our neighbors to feed their families, to live in dignity and to continue to be productive members of our community. Won’t you consider a donation today? under 7 years of age: To schedule a Baptism, please begin by calling the parish office. Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please con-sider scheduling your child’s Baptism before your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is required for the parents. This is a one session class that is held on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is required and you may take the class before your child is born. You must be a regis-tered parishioner of St. Patrick prior to scheduling a Baptism.

Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an overview of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.
